Basil Thai Restaurant

Excellent Thai food place. I much prefer this place to Mai Tai on Prospect Street in Georgetown. Prices are $ 1 – 2 cheaper and with more flavor. Their best deals are their lunch specials! So much variety for $ 10-​$ 13. The flavors merge together nicely and all ingredients complement one another. The food is freshly made and comes out piping hot. Nothing feels «canned» or over salted. (Ahem Mai Tai)
It’s never too busy during lunch. Not sure about dinner since this is my go-​to lunch spot for work. My workplace orders from them many times for work-​lunches. They are always on-​time, courteous and well-​prepared with plates, forks, and sauces! The order is never wrong. But i’m sure they’d be happy to fix it. I’ve never had issue.
Overall, the food is delicious at more than reasonable «Georgetown/​DC» prices. It’s one of the most authentic and «home-​made feeling» of Thai places in the city. Only thing they could work on is their non-​alcoholic beverages. I ordered lemonade once, and it came out neon yellow-​green. Looked like it was made from a powder. And definitely didn’t taste like lemonade haha. But hey, if that’s all I have to deal with, I’ll bring my own lemonade just to eat the delicious lunches!

I called for delivery from GrubHub and ordered Beef in Red curry and a Pad Thai. The pad thai they delivered appeared to have gone bad. It was actually stinking! I called the restaurant but the person I spoke to insisted that the chef had used fresh ingredients. When I then spoke to their manager he insisted that he had in fact tasted the very pad thai made for my order and had found it up to their standard. So basically they couldn’t exchange the pad thai because they were sure it could not possibly be stinking as the manager had EATEN the same pad thai himself before packing it. Plus they insisted that they have always used the same recipe and again it was made exactly acccording to their standard recipe. Absolutely terrible customer service. All they said was its supposed to smell and taste that way. Eventually I told them to come pick it up so that they could smell it themselves, even if they couldn’t exchange it, but was told that their delivery guy had signed off and the manager himself had another 3 deliveries to make so couldn’t come back for the rotten food either. I had to throw the pad thai because I couldn’t take the chance of falling ill. It was $ 13 plus $ 1.50 in tax. Thats $ 14.50 wasted. The Red curry I had ordered was good and I told them that. Would rather order from the countless other thai food places that deliver and have decent customer service.

Such a nice place! We enjoyed every dishes and the lady was really nice as well! Definitely would recommend!

Live in the neighborhood and we order about 3X per month. We love everything we’ve gotten (thus the 3X per month) and the portions tend to be enough for a dinner meal with leftovers for lunch. Or we keep eating because it’s good — only to regret that choice later. I find Thai restaurants to be all over the map — too spicy, too mild, boring… but this place hits the mark each and every time. I have a friend who likes spicy, and he’s not disappointed by ordering here. Definitely recommend hitting this place.

My soup and my noodles were flavorful. The place is clean but it is lacking a little bit of charm despite of some efforts to make it look a little trendy. I would come back for the food, not for the atmosphere!

Basil Thai is a great restaurant to go to for a calm dinner in a relaxing setting. I ordered the red curry with soft tofu and my dinner companion ordered the pad see ew with fried tofu.
The red curry had the perfect amount of spice, and lots of vegetables. I really enjoyed it. My only complaint was that it was thinner than I’m used to and more oily.
The pad see ew was delicious. I really liked the texture of the noodles and the sauce was wonderful.

A little pricey but the server was very pretty and it did not matter. Wontons were good. Soup was good. Main course and dessert were excellent.

I recommend this restaurant because food is great and employees are friendly. if you com Washington, D.C. You should try this restaurant and you should try special drink :)

This restaurant is up the street from work and I’ve been coming here for 3+ years. Last January the place changed hands, and to my initial dismay the old menu was phased out. My favorite go-​to eggplant dish was no longer offered, so I began to try some of the new dishes and was soon completely won over by their palate pleasing flavors.
I loved the two ladies who ran this place before, and I mean them no disrespect, but under new ownership, the menu is more innovative and has some surprises. Today I had one of their four monthly signature dishes, khao soi noodle, a very filling bowl of egg noodles, crunchy noodles, red onions and chicken in a thick, red curry coconut broth. Nikki, the pretty, young and friendly new owner explained to me that the dish was street food from northern Thailand.
So many Thai restaurants in DC serve the same boring dishes with curries that are overly sweet and lack heat, but Basil Thai satisfies my authentic Thai food craving palate. I have traveled in Thailand, and while there I tried many Thai dishes, strolled through food markets and took cooking lessons at a luxury Bangkok hotel. An essential element in Thai cuisine is the intricate potpourri of flavorful ingredients that go into the curry pastes, and Basil Thai chef Samporn gets it; he knows how to make sauces that are balanced, rich and bold.
I look forward to returning to this friendly, genuine Thai restaurant to try the other three innovative signature dishes, and I would recommend that other Unilocal customers do the same.

My family orders from Basil Thai atleast once a week. Their Pad Thai has become the standard to which I compare all other pad thai’s I try, it is not too ‘fishy’ or too dry, and is a generous portion for take out. The dining-​in experience is not spectacular and the delivery usually takes 30 – 45 minutes, but the food is very consistent and delicious.

Amazing house drink — basil thai vodka? So good. Easily could have drank a few.
Food is awesome. Love the drunken noodles.
Service is superb. Owner is very attentive and friendly. Definitely a hidden gem.

I came here with family on vacation, and the food was delicious! Service was great and speedy, everyone was very kind. I’m vegetarian, but you can substitute any meat for tofu, and they had a lot of other options which is great. I’ve eaten a lot of delicious Thai food, and this is up to my standards. The staff is friendly, the food was scrumptious, and the price was fair. If you’re looking for Thai in Georgetown, this is the place to go!!!

Bad delivery experience. The driver refused to come up to my building to deliver the food. I was confused on the phone because he said he was at the cross streets and when I tried to say the building name that I had written on GrubHub, he didn’t want to bring the food to us!
Sooo, what is the purpose of delivery? You’re inconvenienced to bring it to us? Is this not why I was charged AND tipped on top of that?!
He had a nasty attitude when he delivered to the door, did not say hello when I greeted him, shoved the paper in my face to sign, and then ran off.
It’s such a shame because the food tasted great. I was slightly disappointed in the Pad See Ew because they used regular broccoli instead of Chinese Broccoli, and there were maybe 4 little stalks in the whole dish.
Despite their food tasting more flavorful than Mai Thai of Georgetown, I will never order with them again because of their rude service. Mai Thai it is from now on.

My mom was craving Pad Thai while we were in GT so I decided to take her and my brother to Basil Thai since a friend told me this place had a pretty authentic Pad Thai and my mom is very particular about Pad Thai (as she’s Thai and it’s her favorite stir-​fried noodle dish).
We first ordered fried wontons and dumplings. Having turned vegetarian, I couldn’t eat them, but according to my mom and brother they were really really good. I ordered myself some spring rolls and they were good but pretty standard.
My brother ordered Pork Pad See Ew as his entrée, and he enjoyed it. I tried the noodle part and thought it was pretty good too, although we both agreed that they were a little too heavy on the black soy sauce (I’m not sure what it’s called in English but we call it See Ew Dum) and that it should have been stir-​fried at a higher temperature to get more of the «wok taste». But overall, it was better than a lot of places I’ve tried in the DMV area.
Then came the Pad Thai. Oh, forgot to mention I wasn’t very hungry so I made my mom order Tofu Pad Thai (instead of shrimp she usually gets) so I could steal a little bit of her food. We were not disappointed! My mom said it tasted like the ones she used to get back home. I agreed it was very good. I know there are a few places in the DMV area that make good authentic Pad Thai these days and this place is definitely one of them!
The service was very good. The server knew her menu and gave good recommendations for appetizers. I took half a star off for parking and another half for the Pad See Ew, but overall, it was a positive experience. I will definitely be back again to try their Lard Na (the server also recommended it, but I was too full). Great job, Basil Thai!

Best Thai food in GeorgeTown. Love «Pineapple fried rice» and home made «Steamed dumpling» my friend ordered «Sizzling Beef» served with fresh ginger it’s the best.

Got a Thai craving while shopping in Georgetown. While this was a little off the main street, it was worth the walk! Recommended by a local friend and was fast, delicious and filling.
Group ordered pad thai and no one finished their entre – huge portions! Also got panang curry that was perfectly seasoned and warm. Would recommend both dishes.
Menu had lunch and dinner prices for most entres, and standard meals (currys and noodles) were in the $ 13 range, while the more extensive entrees were closer to $ 18.

I ordered the chicken spring rolls, they were delicious. A perfect mixture of chicken and veggies.
I ordered the chicken pad see ew with American broccoli. I requested medium spicy. It was a great spice. Only suggestion is that there needs to be a little more flavor and sauce in the dish.
It is a cute small restaurant looks to be owned by a family. The gentleman that checked me out was friendly. I will give it another shot!

Curry of roasted duck is good! Unlike other places’ putting lots of sugar in coconut milk, the soup is not too sweet. And the duck meet tastes amazing with coconut curry! Very friendly services! Will go back again!

This is the good stuff folks: full flavors, seafood cooked just right, great people! That’s why we have been coming here for 15 years! Today we enjoyed the whole fish, shrunken noodles, charcoal beef appetizer and battered squid so fluffy it tasted like tempura. Basil Thai does not disappoint.
