Mount Peter Ski Area

Went snow tubing only. $ 75 for 3 of us for 2 hours. Lift tix are $ 49 for a whole day, so tubing is very over priced. Should be $ 25 for 4 hours, and this way we would have walked over to lodge, taken a break, etc. Tubing area is fine, could have been a longer run. Fun once but probably not again.

Went yesterday with 2 girls age 5 and a boy age 7, and were very disappointed in the «ski school» and the effort by those in charge to resolve our complaints. All my 4 kids (now grown) learned in ski schools at Windham, Hunter NY and Mt. Snow, Vermont. I expected my grandchildren and niece to get an experience of skiing in the 3 hr group lesson which cost a total of $ 600. They had a very nice young instructor but were standing at the top and only went down the hill once in 2 hours. From the lodge we watched them sit, stand, take helmit off and look around. I went to customer service, a woman went up to check why they weren’t going down. Her response to me was, «The instructor is absolutely doing a good job but the kids are fooling around and they are happy. We want children to be happy.» I told her we paid for the kids to learn how to ski that they could be happy at a park. The manager finally sent up another instructor to help with the group of 6 and then they finally went down the bunny hill 4 times in the remaining 20 minutes. Although all 3 children had to stand at the top of the bunny hill for 2 hours we were only reimbursed with a free lift ticket for 2 kids. We will go back but at the suggestions of 2 other patrons we will put them in private lessons.
Our suggestion of having 2 instructors for beginner groups especially ages 5 – 7 instead of having all the instructors lined up doing nothing was met with a response of, «We have to make a living too.»

Total beginner here. My 3^rd time snowboarding in like 100 years but I finally can get going without falling down every few seconds. I realized it was hard to learn on the bunny hill because you can’t get enough speed to actually try different moves/​techniques.
I left for the first time seriously thinking I might buy my own equipment. For beginners like me this is perfect. I like:
–less than an hour from my house
–parking was easy and very close to the actual slopes
–employees were friendly and patient
–night rates were very reasonable and at night, much less crowded
–rental lockers to store your stuff are 50cents and $ 1 for small and large. Pleasantly surprising bc I remember how much Hershey or Dorney charged (I know not the same venue but stilllllll)
I docked one star because the rental boots I got were quite gross.
Other than that I really enjoyed our trip this time!

A great family friendly ski/​board/​tube mountain (s) for a easy fix that’s close to the NYC area.
Been coming here with a season pass with my family for 4 years and love how every year the management is always upgrading, fixing, maintaining and even cleaning!
A great place for beginners to learn too. Fun for the whole family. Even a bar/​TV for the adults that would rather sit it out.

Signed up for group lessons and they now placed new rules, only private lessons for the fast line. Group lessons being paid for instructions but placed in a line that could be for 25 minutes so for 1.5 hours you get to come down 3 times!!! WTF?!

A good place for beginners to start learning snowboarding :)
Total of 14 trails which are divided into 3 categories: easy, more difficult, and most difficult. For beginners, it’s better to start off at easy trails. Take the OL’ PETE (cable car) to the top. Practice a few times until you get the feeling of turning left & right, and stopping. The trails are pretty short and easy. Don’t worry about falling on your butt or knee. NO PAIN NO GAIN. Once familiar, beginners can try the more difficult trials such as Cedar Lane. The trails get more steep and you slide faster.

Mt. Peter is about 1 ½ hr drive from where we stay. Arrived pretty early about 9.00am. The day were just gorgeous, not cold, air con like and there were already two rows of cars ahead of us in the parking. Parking lot are very near to the lodge and it provided us a good view of the mountain and the kids skiing down from the hill. Pretty view. When we went to the rental office, we were quite taken aback by the forms that we have to fill and began thinking to ourselves what if there were a crowd. But the process went smoothly and off we go to get our gear in another office. The fittings went pretty fast and the staff were helpful and efficient.
A one hour lesson (skiing and snowboarding) came with the rental and were welcome to join all three lessons provided for the day. Its advisable to check their website for the schedule. Four from our group went for the beginner (refresher) course and then off they went for the hill. Daughter were commenting that the lesson were pretty good as the instructor were teaching them to do the «pizza» and also how to get up after falling down considering she didn’t want to go in the first place because Dad has been «penguinning» her last year :) But the «refresher» course did her good and after having her first run up the hill with Dad, she is confident enough to ski down by herself. I would say that it is similar to what you get in other ski resort with a group lesson. But the crowd here (today) its not big and there are many instructor standing by, so its beneficial to beginners. They do have a one to one lesson, where the instructor will bring you uphill but with a different price of course.
The trails were not intimidating and the hills not as high as some other ski area. e.g. Hunter Mountain. The kids were enjoying themselves going up and down the hill by themselves until closing time.
There is a cafeteria with quite a number of seats too but I guess everyone like the «viewing’ area better. The prices on the food are reasonable, cafeteria fare but they have waffle and a store selling crepes outside. Quite a selection too.
All in all, its time well spent and it is as cozy as it can gets. Its very suitable for family with kids just beginning to ski and have some fun. We will surely be hitting this slope again soon, maybe this coming weekend. See you soon Mt. Peter!

Mt. Peter was an ideal place for a family day trip from Central Jersey. The mountain wasn’t crowded upon our arrival at around 10:45am and remained that way for the rest of the day. Most of the other guests were also families — there were a lot of parents teaching young skiiers and snowboarders.
The holiday rates for December 26 ran us $ 45pp for the lift ticket and $ 30pp for rental equipment. Picking up the equipment was smooth. Being beginners, we participated in the free group lesson at 12pm. The lessons were nothing special, but the teenage instructors were encouraging and reasonably helpful.
The 2 lifts and 4 – 5 trails that were open were more than enough to keep first– (or second, or third) time snowboarders occupied and the family members that weren’t on the slopes were able to relax in one of the two small lodges. One has a café, which we found to be reasonably priced.
All the staff, from the instructors, to the lift operators, to the people handling equipment rentals, were professional, friendly, and very accommodating towards beginners. I would definitely recommend Mt. Peter to beginner skiiers or snowboarders.

Unfortunately, Mt Peter provided my two children with their first-​ever skiing experience.
The long, unwieldy line to register and pay should have been a hint of what the day would bring, but given it’s close proximity to NYC this is nothing out of the ordinary. We stood and waited like everyone else (their signage was a a bit confusing, and we weren’t sure if we were even in the correct line at first). After taking forever to register, we made our way to the rental shop with our lift tags in hand. The rental shop was in chos, overcrowded and lacking any sense of order. Screaming and crying kids, adults not sure if they were standing in the right line or not, and employees that disappeared after giving the impression that they were going to help you. Pure frustration!
I don’t give up that easily. We finally got our equipment, and the kids just barely made it in time for their lesson. The «hand-​off» was just as equally confusing. There was a bevy of what appeared to be instructors just standing around not doing anything. Finally, someone approached us about the lesson. The semi-​private lesson, which was not cheap, consisted of one instructor and my two children. Plenty of time for good hands-​on learning (or so I thought). Turns out that what I really paid for was essentially a baby-​sitter (and my kids are getting old enough that they don’t need one!). All he did was throw their skis on, and escort them again and again on what they call the «bunny slope» (it’s probably ¹⁄₈ the size of most bunny slopes I’ve seen). It seemed he wasn’t providing much constructive instruction. But, what was I to know — I was just a parent standing at the sidelines. After the lesson, the instructor left the kids with me and said, to quote, «this is a joke. Just take them on the lift, and let them go down the bigger hill.»
Considering he was the instructor, I took his advice. Big mistake. There was absolutely no comparing the «bunny slope» to the next-​sized hill. It was like jumping from a puddle to an ocean. However, my eight year-​old was very gung-​ho. And off we went… she sped off like a little bullet out-​of-​control. Gee, thanks Mr. Instructor for not even teaching a basic like «pizza» or turning. She was quite traumatized. It was a long, painful descent down the hill. The same experience was repeated with my other child. Pure agony.
And we were done just like that. We made our way to the rental shop to turn in our equipment. And this has to be the biggest joke of all: they have to flip through hundreds of paper receipts in order for you to check-​out. Seriously? Imagine a long line of tired and cranky people holding skis, stuffing themselves into a tiny shop where they must suffer and endure this archaic system of tracking rentals. Of course, everyone was encouraged as an employee stood up on the counter and screamed, «if you do not check-​out, YOU WILL BE CHARGED!!». You would think, at least, that multiple family member’s rental receipts would be stapled and kept together. No, they were mixed up! Incredible. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a big money-​maker for the shop — — the vast number of frustrated people who simply toss their equipment and leave out of frustration.
At the end of the day, both kids were in tears and I was shaking my fist at Mt Peter. We will not return. Do yourself, and your family, a HUGE favor and drive an extra hour for a FAR better experience (see my other review).
Mt Peter, my coat doesn’t deserve your lift tag.

Hmmm it’s difficult giving them a 1 rating because it’s human nature to root for the under dog and I wanted to love this place but alas I didn’t. Unfortunately this small family run resort does their best (I think), but just doesn’t come close to the competition, not by a long shot.
I’m nearly a beginner skier as is my 6 year old son. The reviews said perfect for beginners and they boast this. Not! The bunny slope is about 30 or 40 yards long and practically flat, I think you can get up to about 3 mph tops. That is not a bunny slope. I asked the attendant what gives and was told they have a true bunny slope but they shut down the hand pull lift, he pointed to it and told me we could use it but have to walk up? Really? So we did and it was about 100 yards long and would’ve been perfect if some sort of a lift was operational. We walked it once and was beat so we went back to the insanely flat knoll, which requires you to climb a slight incline to get to it with skis on??? It took us forever to climb this f***ing crest adding fuel to my already agitated flame.
On the positive side there’s 3 or 4 small runs for the novice and its quite affordable I’ve been told. The lodge is nice albeit small & crowded (super small) which is the theme here. The staff was very friendly.
If you’re a novice or looking for an affordable skiing trip go ahead although I’d go else where. This is not a place to come to learn how to ski for a 100% beginner or a pro. Shame.

This place is pretty damn good for its size! It’s not the biggest run in these hills but it has everything you need here. I went on a saturday and there were a lot of people but the lines moved quickly. The young men and women here did a really good job of keeping things moving, communicating with guests and not loosing their cool to rude customers getting their rentals. Impressive right?! I was impressed because I worked at a movie theatre at their age and I said some shit to ignorant customers in my day! If you have a problem with this slope/​size/​facilities and employees, fly your ass out to Breckenridge brah!

Poor facility (not enough ski racks or lodge seats), poor line mgmt, long lift lines… On the day itself 1÷19÷14, snow was great but too many juniors on blue/​black slopes.

Its an hr drive from where i stay. felt mouintain is v good for begineers. Instrcutors were v cool and it wasnt slushy compared to other mountains. It wasnt crowded and it was fun to ski without having to worry about bumping into others. Lifts were so so. Didnt have to walk a lot from car parking to ticketing area. Felt tickets were on the expensive side. would prefer carrying food.
Compared to stratton, mountain creek they dont allow a friend to be with a first time skier unless you have the moutain pass and the equipment which has its own pros and cons. Overall nice experience mainly because of the instructor and snow conditions. Def a nice place to learn as they have free begineer lesson

Well-​run place that feels like home as soon as you arrive. For a small resort there is a variety of trails and prices are reasonable. Everyone is nice and professional.

For those of us who live in NYC there aren’t many options for a day trip. We found Mount Peter after doing a search and decided to give it a try– so glad we did! I am a beginner and I love the fact that the mountain is small enough that I didn’t feel overwhelmed and yet the more difficult trails were great for my husband who has been skiing for years.
We left NYC at 9:00AM (on a weekday) and it took us about 1h15m. I scheduled a private lesson with Denise (she was patient, encouraging & really helped me) and I even felt comfortable enough to ski with my husband after my lesson, actually made it down the trail without falling once — yippee!
There was only one lift opened but no wait and the cost for lift tickets and rentals were very reasonable. We left about 3:30 which worked out well — it seems to get busier with kids/​teens around that time. I am just jealous watching them effortlessly ski & snowboard down the mountain without a care in the world.
I assume they are much busier on Sat/​Sun, but will try a weekend before the season is over.
If you are looking for a nice place to ski close to NYC /​LI this is definitely the place to go. Thanks to all at Mount Peter — we are looking forward to our next visit!

Went yesterday for some night boarding. Very cool mountain, inexpensive and more trails than I expected. Towards the end of the night they only had one lift open which made for long lift lines but it was pretty good overall. The weather was on the warmer side but the snow kept up well.
It’s closer than PA mountains, less crowded than Mountain Creek and pretty cheap. Good place to go if you’re well below expert level and big enough to tear it up with friends. I’ll definitely be back.

Don’t expect the Rockies, but given the proximity to New York City — 1 hr 15 min from our house in Lower Westchester Co — this place is wonderful. Definitely kid-​friendly, my 4-​year old learned to ski here. We’ve tried both a Saturday and a weekday. Weekend wasn’t too crowded, even though only 2 lifts were operating, never had to wait more than 2 min in line.
Our Monday visit was heaven — hardly anyone there when we arrived at 11am. By 4pm the school groups arrived but still no complaints. Wide, well groomed beginner trails, 2 challenging black diamonds, a very usable bunny slope, and friendly staff. The base lodge is sunny, comfy, safe for stashing your stuff if you don’t want to bother with a locker. Bathrooms are clean. We packed snacks so cannot comment on the caf. The clip below shows a run on one of the green trails — and my son skiing it w/​out falling :-)

To try snowboarding for the first time, my family wanted an affordable day trip, an easy drive from NYC. We got the impression that Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ would probably be a little overwhelming for us first-​timers so we chose Mount Peter because of their reputation as a family-​friendly, beginner-​friendly place, and their Christmas break offer: free beginner lessons with the purchase of a $ 40 lift ticket.
We took the drive up there which was peaceful and scenic. The parking lot was small and not organized. Filling out the paperwork went pretty smoothly. Rentals were $ 30 per person. The equipment they gave us didn’t really suit us well. The boards were too short for our weight but we made do with what they had. Also, the boards were in poor condition, lacking any wax and a proper edge. The previous day’s rain had made the parking lot muddy and the snow conditions terrible, but that wasn’t Mount Peter’s fault. If we had been able to reschedule our planned trip, we would have.
Our free beginner lesson was taught by a teenager, maybe 15 to 17 years old. He was sweet, nervous, and trying his damn hardest to teach our group of four. We later found out that we were only his second lesson. We saw a group of adults wearing red Mount Peter logo jackets who we assumed were teachers for the private/​paid lessons. So when you go there for a free beginner lesson, be aware that you will be taught by a teen.
The «bunny hill» has a tow rope for a lift, which runs along the edge of the hill. We found it impossible to use. With the rain-​melted snow that had become slippery ice, and the icy edge sloping outward toward muddy grass, rocks and trees, our snowboards kept sliding out from under us and we were constantly, nerve-​wrackingly veering off that edge. Often my friend’s son ended up in the dirt. But even though the hill got icier as the day went on, we had a blast. We slipped, fell, rolled, flipped and face-​planted, but we laughed. Other beginners were doing the exact same thing and we all cheered each other on, giving a thumbs-​up whenever someone made it to the bottom on their feet.
This place is definitely family-​friendly and if you go often you get to know the people who work there. The bathrooms are nice. I’ve heard they were recently redone. The cafeteria however is in need of some serious help. The food was worse than school cafeteria food and it had me wishing I could have been eating tasteless hospital food. A huge, thick plastic bag of chicken noodle soup concentrate was dumped into a pot of hot water, bag and all. The popcorn chicken nuggets tasted very processed and fake. The premade burgers and nachos were like movie theater food. We were starving, cold and had no other choice. So I got the popcorn chicken and a soup. I spilled the soup on my coat sleeve and boy did my coat stink. The SMELL was even artificial, and every time I got a whiff of it I wanted to puke. But no one got sick or had a bathroom emergency so all was well and we went back out onto the ice to throw ourselves down the hill a few more times until we had had enough.

Are you and avid skier/​snowboarder who lives in New York City? Do you ever say to yourself around Noon on a sunny Saturday that, «I’d really like to go skiing today»? That was me this past weekend, and a trip to lovable little Mount Peter was the perfect adventure.
This place will never be confused with Aspen or Jackson Hole, but the proximity to NYC (barely over an hour door-​to-​door from my apartment) combined with the reasonable lift ticket prices (I paid $ 25 for a «twilight pass» from 3pm to 9pm) made for a satisfying experience.
There’s not a ton of variety in terms of terrain, but I was perfectly content to ski the same expert-​level run for a few hours while enjoying the great outdoors. I’d wager this is a pretty good spot for new skiers/​boarders to learn — as long as things aren’t too iced-​up.
All in all, it’s safe to say that this is my favorite local ski hill.
