Scappoose Bay Paddling Center

My daughter and I took our kayaks out to paddle Scappoose Bay. We stopped in at the marina store to get some information before we unloaded. We were extremely impressed with the people working there. We were surprised what good prices they offer on kayaks and other equipment.
The customer service we experienced both in the store and the dock staff was amazing. This was truly like the early years at Nordstroms. It is obvious a company culture and was a treat to see.
We had a great paddle on the bay, saw lots of wildlife! Getting in and out of our yaks at a dock was a first for us… Think middle aged, out of shape but willing to embarrass ourselves. The dock staff were awesome. We got out with dignity intact.

Totally a fan. A group of friends invited me and I really enjoyed it. We took a rather sedate route thru the Bay and as creek — just right for the group. I’d like to go back and paddle out to the channel. Boats were clean and staff friendly.

We made a reservation weeks in advance as part of our honeymoon. Our reservation was confirmed via email, my husband even replied back to the confirmation email, double checking that the date was correct and was assured that yes, the date we reserved was going to be good. We flew into Portland and drove two hours to Scappoose Bay to discover the business closed. Someone from the business next door said they knew the owner and called him, the owner said he was closed, nothing he could do. Needless to say our honeymoon kayaking trip was ruined as we were scheduled to leave town the next day. I can’t believe a business would act so irresponsibly and without regret for being jerks.

5 stars for the customer service. but my husband and I weren’t that impressed with the lake to kayak around in. It was a bit boring. There wasn’t much to look at. the stream was rather boring. I don’t recommend this for those looking for a little excitement from the water current cause that is pretty much none existent.

Bru and his staff are outstanding and were very appreciative of our business. Would recommend them for all your kayaking needs. Thanks guys!

I just love these people. Friendly, helpful, professional and so knowledgeable about the bay and all things kayak-​related. I rented from them a couple of times and had great experiences. I eventually purchased a new kayak and Bru walked me through all the features of the particular boat and how to set up and maintain it. Not just a quick once-​over either. He spent a few hours making sure I got my hands on it, explained the design of the boat, how it is manufactured, the features of the new model, etc. Never a ‘hard-​sell’ and with a genuine desire to make sure I had every question answered. All the staff is like that too. Just phenomenal. They should teach classes on how to treat customers.

I have come out here from time to time with my godfather, who is professional enough that he takes groups out on kayaking trips. So, he knows his stuff and knows that this is the best place around for rentals and to go out on the water.
The staff has always been helpful whenever I’ve rented boats and boating equipment from them.
The last time I came here, which was at the end of July, my boyfriend and I brought our inflatable kayak up and had an amazing time paddling around with my godfather. Highly recommend if you’re looking for some quiet, laid-​back offshoot of the Columbia River to explore.

We went back and purchased a couple of Kayaks. They were so nice, explained everything you needed to know about the kayaks. Just love the staff — we will make the extra drive to purchase from here instead of the closer stores. It’s worth checking out!

In the past I have avoided rentals and tours, especially water related, for a couple of reasons — I don’t like people selling me things I don’t want or aren’t ready for, such as a boat, kayak or canoe I might use 3 times a season AND I wonder about the quality of service and safety with staff when out on tour –NOT SO HERE. Safety is paramount, guides placed themselves throughout the group, provided knowledge about the wildlife and seasons, pointed out a nutria and other hidden gems along the tour. There was no rush to get in and out and no hard sales. Most of all, I sensed the staff loved their work, nature and sharing that with others. Thanks for a great kayak tour! Bowchickawowwow!

We did their guided paddle trip on New Year’s Day. It was awesome! The gear was great and not the typical «rental «gear. The guides were super friendly and knowledgable about the kayaking route (of course) but also the birds and other animals we saw. One guide took photos and has offered to email them to us. The post-​tour social time was relaxed and fun. They know how to host an excellent tour.

Been here six or more times, with friends and my children.
The byways south of the office are fun to explore! The staff is always kind and helpful. Just make sure the water is not too low! You may get stuck in mud (which is pretty funny, really.) Great place to explore. I feel like I am in the Florida Keys or a bayou. Warm water, little current.

If you are female– STOP. This is not the place for you, and they don’t, care because you are not worth it.
Here is the problem. There is equipment/​life vest designed for women but when you rent a Kaya you have to have a life vest.
Scappoose Bay will NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT GENDER VEST BECAUSE AS THE GUY FITTING US OUT WITH ALL THE EQUIPMENT SAID, ‘WE SELL FEMALE VESTS BUT THEY ARE $ 130 BUCKS! THEY ARE TOO EXPENSIVE TO USE FOR RENTERS.“
Message received — women aren’t worth it even though, from what I saw, 80% of their renters were women.
There are other Kayaking places to rent from! Call around.

This is probably the friendliest and most helpful place of this kind I have found anywhere. Not owning a kayak myself I always end up renting them for the family and myself.
Their facility is well equipped, clean, staffed with great people and in a great location. The Scappoose Bay is a beautiful place to spend a relaxing afternoon in the many bayous that are very close to where the boats are docked. We saw many kinds of animals including eagles, turtles, signs of beavers and many other birds. I have always liked this place but I actually think they have gotten even better than they were last year.

Such a great place! These guys know their stuff when it comes to kayaking. Their shop is easy to find and full of all the stuff you’ll need if you want to outfit yourself with the latest gear. They also rent kayaks for paddling on your own, or you can join one of their tours.
We’ve gone on two of their nocturnal tours and plan to do a different one next time, just to see something a bit different. The staff is wonderfully knowledgeable and friendly. Scappoose Bay is right there and is nice and calm, great for novice kayakers. The first tour we took was in July and the water levels were really high so we were able to paddle through the trees, across to Bryce Lake, and into Scappoose Creek. We saw osprey, eagle’s nests, beavers, great blue herons, and cows. Yep, there are cows grazing alongside the creek.
Second trip was in late summer and the water was too low for us to go under some bridges, so we turned back and went up the creek. With paddles.
Definitely my favorite place to explore, but don’t go out into the creeks at night without a guide, or a GPS as it’s easy to get lost in there!

Took a paddle board class here yesterday (through PCC) and it was amazing! My husband and I had been wanting to try paddle boarding for a long time and I am really glad we learned from Steve (the owner and our guide). He was so knowledge and patient and very personable. He knows an enormous amount about the bay and the wildlife. This place is a gem of a find. The bay is a great place to kayak or paddle board and SBK is a great place to rent from too (or have lessons/​excursions).

I have come to Scappoose Bay to kayak around 8 times or so. Love it here, it’s so beautiful. I have rented kayaks a handful of times and the prices are reasonable and staff is very friendly. I’ve brought my friend’s kayaks out here too. Once the weather gets better, I’ll be here on a weekly basis!

Amy and I went back to rent the sailing kayaks.
it is a lot of fun!!! $ 60 for the lesson and a few hours. We sailed around sand island. When you caught the wind just right… it would haul ass it was great bunch of fun. Unfortunately the things are a little too spendy at $ 3200/​each.
But rental for $ 60/​two hours seems like a good deal.
