A Calcutta Affair

Another Indian place with stale vegetarian food and limited options. It’s better Monday through Thursday where you have thalli option. Avoid the Friday buffets. Veg options are so limited that you will be to fill yourself with plain rice or bread.

Had the Sunday buffet here. The food was authentic Calcutta style. They had Pucka (Paani Puri for rest of india) as starters. The filling was great, even had black chana in the potato mixture. Though the «Paani» was not great. They had some vegetable pakodas which were not crisp and oily & heavy, should have avoided.
The lamb chop was a bit heavy. Not really sure if it is meant to be that way. But it was good. The star of the show for me was the Kossa Mangsho (Lamb curry) which was out of the world! Fish gravy (forgot the name) was really good too. Luchi was fresh but was missing the authentic aloo dum instead they had a mix veg which was disappointing.
On the whole a satisfying affair! Could have been better but we are in USA!

We had takeout from A Calcutta Affair this past weekend and were thrilled to finally find some high quality Indian food within striking distance of our home.
Butter Chicken was truly fabulous as was the Paneer Motor (peas, tomato garam masala sauce). Samosas, garlic naan and rice were tasty. We didn’t like as much an eggplant dish, Beguner jhal, though it was nicely flavored the unpeeled eggplant was a bit fussy to eat.
We’ll definitely be back.

Worst Bengali food ever spent 110 $ for worst service and food never never going back

It is the worst place to eat … In the name of Bengali food selling some junk food… Old tandoori chickens are fried and served during lunch buffet… Not a single item from the menu is worth trying… Kala jamoon was really bad and it was removed from the buffet when owner saw me struggling with it. Though I have video of my dissection but unfortunately cannt upload here.
All of the food are tasteless… This is my recent experience. Please think twice before visiting this place

Very much avoidable considering standard of food & cost. They are charging $ 20 for buffet now. Not sure why but they felt they should charge that amount. The food is worth for $ 10 & anything above that is a premium for no reason.
Every item they had is from Bengali menu but the taste is way too different. In fact no taste at all. Only you find plenty of oil but just putting oil taste doesn’t come out.

Was there for lunch today. The rental style food was a pleasant change from the usual and Indian fare. The buffet detect on was not bad and the prices reasonable. We had a group of five but was super sed that they added a 18% service charge to the bill since it was a buffet. We would have tipped anyway but a service charge at a buffet is unusual.

As far as my knowledge goes, this is the only place where you can get Bengali (not Bangladeshi) food in New Jersey. The first impression about this place is that it is clean and has ample parking. The Saturday buffet was nice and a good array of food items. the fish chop, veg chop, chhanar dalna and mishti doi was awesome. They had goat but it was not cooked to perfection and there was a little too much hing (asofeatada) in the chholar dal. But overall the experience was great.
I’d like to revisit this place with friends and family

Been here twice and was satisfied both the time. Love their buffet which has mutton curry, fish curry, chicken and sometimes mutton chop (was their in my first visit, missing in my second visit). The food is more of home style especially the mutton curry and the mustard fish curry.
The ambiance is OK, enough space. The service is bit slow and they still have room for improvement on the desert BUT the awesome mutton curry and fish curry makes up for all those gaps and misses.
Overall, will recommend this place.

Pathetic pathetic to the core

The food was very disappointing. Everything we ordered was too spicy to eat and wi am used to eat spicy at home. Chicken dopiyaza was horrible. I could see the red base of tikka masala. Fish Kalia was not edible as well. The cook did not fry the fish well. Dhaba daal was so spicy that we had to have it replaced. On the other hand we wanted chicken roll spicy and it was not spicy at all. Overall had a very bad experience with food.

I just came back from having lunch at this place and I have to say that the experience was just ok. I ordered the non-​vegetarian Thali (fish) lunch special and it was good but not awe-​inspiring. I went with a group of Indian friends from work one of whom is from Calcutta. He said that the restaurant was not authentic and he was disappointed with his meal. My other Indian friends said their dishes were okay but they wouldn’t come back here.
Since I’ve never had food from this region, I had nothing to compare to with regards to authenticity. The service was very slow and we waited a long time to get our meals. A group that came in after us got their food quicker than we did and left before we did. To be honest, I wouldn’t go back to this place based on this experience.

Went in expecting a lunch buffet. They offered us a thali instead of the buffet (which I feel is much better in quality and very less food wasted than in buffet) which is a very good combination of south Indian and north Indian dishes. Fresh roti and a bowl of rice. Bang on the buck.

Had a lunch party yesterday, again big time disappointment. Had mochar ghonto, fish kalia, murg masala
May b there were running out of salt so none of the dishes was as par its taste!
How could someone prepare murg item so bad! Thats a staple item a 2 yrs kid may prepare lot better than them. I am in shock how that restaurant is still running their business may be they have just no other competitor as I dont know any other restaurant offering somewhat bengali cuisine.

This place has authentic Kolkata dishes. The only of its kind. There are several Bangladeshi restaurant in New York though. However if this restaurant was in Kolkata I don’t think any one would ever go there. In NJ, its a different story. Been there 5 times over the past 10 months. Highly inconsistent standard of food. Kolkata is known for its sweet and this restaurant serves the worst quality sweets I have tasted in my life.

I have been to Calcutta Affair five times over the past year and I would say that it is one of the more authentic places to have Bengali food from the West Bengal side. The Greater New York City area has a ton of Bengali restaurants, but most serve food from Bangladesh, which is usually very greasy and spicy. Calcutta Affair’s food is different in that it is much more home style. The menu is also quite large and diverse and I have enjoyed every time I visited the restaurant.
I have ordered fish fry every time I have been there. The luchi and alur dom combination is also fantastic. The lunch thali is highly recommended.
Although a bit far away from NYC, folks from Calcutta who really miss food from the city should pay a visit to this restaurant.

We had two different people call in to confirm that they offered halal food and after some confusion, they confirmed it so we came on a Sunday night. The place was mostly empty except for a group of 8 that was here before us.
We ordered a wide range of items from chicken biryani to shrimp (with noodles and fried rice) as well as mutton and okra.
The order took a little longer to come out than usual but all the items tasted were great and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
Not really my first choice of places to eat halal food but if you’re in the area and want to try Indian food, you won’t be disappointed.

A truly family friendly restaurant. We wanted to try Indian food but were worried that our son would not like the food.
It was a big surprise for me to find out that they have kids meal (American Food), and the best thing about their kids meal is they give real fruits to the kids.
Great food and service. My son was fussy, they took balloons from their party room and gave them to my son to play with.
It’s a great restaurant! And the price is unbeatable!

Awesome lunch buffet on Friday and Saturday from 11:30a to 3p for $ 11.50. Equally as delicious as my old time favorite right down the road, Pooja. I think ACA serves cuisine from a different region than Pooja. It seems less intensely-​salted and curried up, leaving you smell-​free upon departure (if that bothers you).
Lot of yummies to try here. It doesn’t hurt to take a small spoonful of each and every dish. After all, that’s the beauty of buffets. Some of my fave dishes were, and I’m sorry I’m ignorant to the Indian names: paneer cheese cubes in bright orange masala sauce (pretty standard item at most Indian buffets), chicken curry (incredibly moist, flavorful chunks of chicken), and the rice pudding (not so thick as the American type) with a subtle rose water flavor.
The service is quick and friendly here. Plates are cleared immediately, water glasses are never empty, and fresh, hot naan is brought table side. Buffets creep some people out, but ACA is spic and span. The restaurant provides a warm and relaxing atmosphere to ravenously devour plate after plate of Indian goodness.

Great lunch buffet is just $ 11.50! The choices at lunch are authentic subcontinent food and very nicely prepared, but they’re not Bengali. Tasty but not Calcutta. Easily three and a half stars, and the heat level was a solid medium so it’s definitely worth rounding up.
At lunch this visit A Calcutta Affair offered us salad (chopped carrot, tomato, and green pepper), veg tandoor (stuffed red and green peppers), fish gold coin (salmon disks topped with veg), chilli paneer (mild white cheese stir-​fried with onions, peppers and spices), murg musalam (chicken in mild curry cream sauce), egg curry (hard-​boiled eggs in a spicy tomato sauce), begum bharta (eggplant and peas), dal vada curry (lentil patties in a spicy sauce), paneer aloo (really spicy spinach and potato), white long-​grain rice and of course naan and roti. No chutneys or raita tho, just one dish of mint sauce. And for dessert there was a carrot concoction (not a pudding, not a cake, more like a sweet stew) and sweet soft balls (not golub jamun, something else).
Room is bright and tables are comfortably spaced, feels classy. Service was friendly but minimal — not a complaint, we did the buffet — he brought and refilled drinks promptly. Also brought the table a fresh batch of roti that was outstanding.
The dinner menu is way, way different, with many fish and mutton entrees. My unindicted co-​conspirator who was born & raised in Calcutta assures me the dinner selection is classic Bengali food, have to get back to try it.
