I had a haircut. It was not that great.

I saw Tamar as she had great reviews and thought I would take try her. The first time she was very attentive and informative and a reasonable cut as the previous style was grown out. The second time I left wondering what is she doing! She tried to make the hair do something with her hands NOT with the scissors! Growing hair out is a challenge but I asked a lot of questions the last time and she still butchered it with thinning shears vs. designing with a precision cut. I am at a disadvantage not being able to watch her because of visual problems and I really doubt even after three visits she knows my name. She didn’t listen and my HAIR is a MESS. $ 20.00 each time with $ 5.00 tip (my choice) and I should have just left. Totally regret going back!!!

STAY AWAY from this place! I got the worst haircut of my life at this place! Thanks god My hair grows super fast. Otherwise I would have gone to another place and get a pixie cut just to get rid of this disaster! I just wanted a trim for my short bob and found this place on Unilocal.The ratings were amazing and it is very close to my home. How hard is a bob style on a healthy straight hair??? Apparently really hard. It is very uneven and jagged. I have to pin my hair and put on a lot of gel every day to cover the disaster. One of my colleagues thought I trimmed it myself! The place is filthy. Maro didn’t change or sanitize her comb and scissors after she finished the haircut on the guy before me. In the middle of cutting my hair she dropped the scissors and picked it up and continue cutting! My advice to you Unilocalers: don’t be stingy like me and pay 10 or 20 bucks more and go to a proper place!

I just want to say Thank you very much for the great job that the young lady did with my damage hair this afternoon. The staff was so nice and friendly, made me feel so walcome. The lady who washed and cut my hair seams to understand her job perfectly, made it with a lot professionalism. It’s so difficult to find a good hairstylist, especially for the price. This was definitely the best experience that I have had lately with hair salons in the Waltham aria and of course I will be back exactly next week for some scalp treatment. Highly recommend!

This was definitely a great experience for my hair needs! Maro did a great job cutting my pixie cut! From the greeting, washing/​cut/​blow-​dry til the end, Maro was very professional and nice. With such joyful experience I will go back for my future cuts and hair coloring!

I didn’t have a good experience here and feel cheated by the many good reviews. I gave it a few chances but every time, I had an uncomfortable experience at the salon. The phone keeps ringing off the hook and the stylists would stop in the middle of a cut to pick it up. Very unprofessional. It’s not just a short conversation, it would sometimes extend and the lady who runs the place talks slowly and talks a lot. That all is fine if they give amazing haircuts, but both my recent experiences, I came out feeling like crying and hiding my face until my hair grows out. I gave the stylist a photo of what I want, but she doesn’t seem to understand and gave me something completely different. Now, my hair is too short and I look like a teenager. I am never trusting my hair with them again.

I would give 5+ stars if I could!
I’m from the area but have been getting my hair cut at high-​end salons in Los Angeles and Philadelphia for the past 6 years and recently moved to DC. Home for the holidays and in serious need of a haircut, I chose this place based on the excellent Unilocal reviews. I called 15 minutes ahead of my desired appointment time and waited no time to be seen (granted it was in the middle of the day on a weekday, but a pleasant surprise nonetheless). Tamar is EXCELLENT! She cleaned up my layered long hair AND shaved/​styled my undercut in no time, with a flare. Words to describe her include talented, well-​trained, adaptable, artistic, and efficient. To top it off, she charges much less than she could get away with. I’ll definitely recommend to friends and family and will be back!

Maro – thank you SO much for your efficient, beautiful work! I made an appointment for 5:15 last Friday to get my hair washed, cut, and styled. I had a black-​tie event to attend in the Back Bay, and I had to be there by 7 – factoring in my driving time, she basically had an hour to do EVERYTHING.
This lady was seriously my fairy godmother that night. She was lightning quick, like Homer in that one episode:
And the results were fantastic. The cut was perfect, and the blowout had me feeling like:
She even saw that I was trying to do my makeup at the same time, and gave me a large mirror to work with. By 6:10, the transformation had taken place, and I was ready to party!

I got a cut and color and it was probably the best I’ve ever had. Tamar is so knowledgable about colors and explained to me what exactly she was doing. Also, before cutting, she made sure I understood the amount I was taking off. The outcome was exactly what I wanted (and I’m VERY picky when it comes to my hair) — all for an extremely reasonable price. If you overlook this place, you’re definitely missing out. I will recommend this place to everyone I know.
Also, to reiterate what other posts have said, Tamar is very passionate about her job and is amazing at what she does. Thank you!

I have only been to this salon two times, but it only took that first appointment for me to realize that CUSTOM CUTS was a DIAMOND IN THE RUFF!
Tamar was my stylist my first time. I liked her a lot right away. I could tell she was very passionate about her job, and that she genuinely cared about making sure her clients left feeling great and looking great. She wasn’t dressed for a fashion show, or the club, she didn’t have on a mini dress and pumps; she was dressed cute and stylish, yet FUNCTIONABLE!
Today, was my second appointment. Again, Tamar was my stylist. I was super happy to have her as my stylist again, I knew she understood me when explaining what was going on. I told her about how I had gone elsewhere, (even though it was needless to say) and that the current «hairstyle» I had was a direct result of a terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE (& expensive!) experience,
I needed it fixed badly! & she knew exactly what to do. Not once was I worried while she was snipping and cutting. As she goes, she explains what it is that she’s doing and why she’s doing it. By the time she was done my hair looked awesome and it felt right. I actually WANTED TO style it and wear it down for the first time in months!
Life lesson: just because a hair salon is «fancy» and expensive DOESN’T mean it will deliver a good hairstylist. When you’re dressed looking like you’re going to the club I’m thinking you care more about how YOU look than I will…
Long story short, it cost me $ 20 to have her «undo» $ 200. BUT the sad part is, it’s Tamar, the girl who works at the local, family owned business, does a kick ass job, and cares about her customers that deserves the $ 200!!!

TLDR: awkward length hair turned best haircut ever! Amazing service, and only $ 20.
This is my first time writing a review because I couldn’t possibly not. This place is outstanding! I will go here for every cut for the rest of my life of i can. It doesn’t look like much, but let me give you a quick walk through of my experience with Maro.
I called the day of for an appointment, and after giving me a time asked if I could come at 645 instead so they could really spend time with me even though they close at seven. I’m growing out a pixie and dont have long hair in the front or on top so after we talked for a while I said she could give me a new pixie that would grow out better and she got serious and said if I want to grow it i can’t do that. Well cut it then I can always go shorter.
The cut is incredible. I wanted a whispy hairline on my neck and she nailed it! Are was so excited about it she put product in and took pictures from every angle while doing small adjustments with pomade. She even did a few small cuts after to perfect it and was sooo happy I couldn’t help but glow too! I can do a lot of styles with practically no effort. She said I can come back for touch ups any time.
The best haircut I’ve gotten maybe ever, at least in 6 years and at a super awkward length and all for $ 20!!!

Not sure if my first review went through, but Tamar is so good at what she does, I don’t mind putting in another anyhow! I have had my hair cut by her on two occasions, and in both cases she has done an amazing job. I’ve brought her a picture both times and she always had helpful recommendations about slight modifications to make which only made it better. She works magic with her scissors and is a joy to talk to!

Eyebrows are AMAZING! Talin is attentive, knowledgeable, and the consummate professional when it comes to eyebrow styling. She knows exactly what shape best fits your look and face. She definitely knows the importance of eyebrow framing. She takes her time and let’s you know upfront that your eyebrows probably need to be fixed from all of the bad /​prior waxing. She’ll tell you to be patient and then will get to work. By the end you will look in the mirror and wonder what took you so long to meet this amazing woman. She will be your elbows new BFF. If you are lucky you will get your brows done by her. The price?! Well I think it’s by far too cheap… tip her well. Your eyebrows deserve her!

I am so incredibly pleased with my haircut. I just moved here from Virginia, so I was relying on reviews. They were spot on. Maro was amazing. I was very happy with her attention to detail for my hair. I wear a pixie, so as simple as it is, or seems, it is a very technical cut. Talin really went above and beyond for my brows. She had finished for the day, but you wouldn’t have known it. She did not rush, and even offered tips for my very light, full brows. She did an amazing job shaping them. I was simply blown away. Do not judge this amazing book by their humble cover. They could charge high end prices for their amazing work! There is ample parking, same day appointments and friendly, fantastic service! What more could anyone want?!

Here’s a review for 2 difficult hair types + eyebrow trimming:
(1) Asian female, untreated straight hair
I had my hair cut by both Maro and Tamar (mother and daughter). They are both very passionate about their profession and take great pride in it.
My first time was with Tamar, and she was repulsed by how bad the last hair dresser did to my hair. (She really cares!) She gave me her honest opinion that it’d take 2 haircuts to fix it, and explained how exactly she was going to fix my hair. She was fast and precise. She gave me a time line to come back.
The second time, Maro cut my hair. I told her what Tamar said, and I wanted my hair to be «fixed» (e.g. look normal) but planned to grew it long later. Maro then cut and styled my hair, but I didn’t like the extra length she kept for me. Without a sign of annoyance, she offered to cut it again, and also rinsed off the hair product in my hair for a clean cut. Maro was patient throughout the process. Then wallah, I feel reborn again.
(2) Caucasian male, thinning, curly hair
Tamar cut his hair twice, both under 20 min plus a bit of styling. I have to say that it rivals the fancier salons he used to visit, and Tamar’s hair style is even easier to maintain! Her haircut made his hair looked fuller and more evenly covered. Tamar took drop-​in the first time, and a quick appointment the second time.
(3) Eyebrow trimming by Talin
It was convenient to get my eyebrows done right before my haircut. Talin offered waxing and plucking, and I chose the later. Talin was nice enough to reshape my eyebrows when I didn’t like how it turned out first. My eyebrows definitely looked much better than me doing it in the bathroom myself.
In all, GREAT SERVICE, CONVENIENT APPT TIME, comes with PARKING!

I have tried many places locally, but this is by far the best. The salon itself is small, but Maro is amazing! I have never had anyone discuss various ways of cutting my hair, rather than just cutting off the amount I ask or what they feel is best. She took the time to help me decide the length, style, etc.
and the TeaTree Experience is amazing. I felt so relaxed after.
This place may not be close by, but I will definitely be returning there for the next hair cut! Or maybe just for some TeaTree massage/​mask to keep my hair this soft and healthy.
