The best. No comparison and no question. Impeccable service. Amber is amazing at the front desk. To have a doctor’s office that is so approachable, efficient, and relaxed is worth more than I can ever say here.

Friendly staff but extremely long wait times. expect to wait for up to 1 hour and 15 minutes before you actually see the NP, midwife, or doctor.

This review is waaay over due. Which is not the only reason I’ve decided to write it. Many of the reviews I’ve read are for Dr Wells as a physician during pregnancy and delivery. Since I’m not pregnant and have a different experience I want to share so others perhaps looking for other needs can consider his expertise.
I was living overseas when I found out that I had fibroid tumors in my uterus. After jumping through hoops with my insurance overseas, I was offered a couple options of surgery that seemed rather invasive and no peace of mind.
I decided to come back to the Bay Area and consult with Dr Wells. While the office has nothing to do with the insurance policies and rules they were extremely helpful in helping me navigate the system and helped provide options and resources.
Once I met with Dr Wells and the staff, I was offered a much less invasive surgery and so much more peace of mind. It’s now been over 1 year since my surgery and not only do I feel great, but I have no external scars. I’m so glad that I came back to the U.S. and consulted with Dr. Wells.
When I am ready to have a baby, I hope Dr Wells will be my Dr.

I’ve had two successful pregnancies and deliveries under Dr Wells’ care. My last pregnancy was with twins and despite my huge anxiety and protesting about having them naturally, Dr Wells really hung in there with me and encouraged me to try it given that both babies were in ideal positions for a vaginal birth. So, I put my full trust in his professional judgment and went along with his recommendations. I can say that the natural delivery of my twins was incredibly peaceful, safe, and an overall wonderful experience. I am so grateful to have been under his care.

This review is extremely overdue, and likely won’t say anything different the other various five star reviews have said, but I just have to be part of the chorus singing Dr. Wells, Sonya, Monica, and everyone else’s praises. The standard of care provided here sets the bar for all offices I will ever step into. Making appointments was a seamless process (Ambur is a superstar), wait time was nonexistent in most cases, and at most five minutes. When being seen, I was always heard, told everything I needed to know, and I truly felt like my pregnancy was a top priority. This was my first pregnancy and I always felt in control, never judged, and educated on the entire process. Before I end this glowing review though, without getting into the gory details, I especially want to single out Sonya for her exemplary level of care. When I went into labor on a Tuesday night, I talked to Sonya who diagnosed, correctly, that my water likely broke and to head to the hospital. I followed her instructions, she told me what procedures would occur when I arrived at the hospital, and from then on, I was on the best journey I could’ve ever expected, largely in part to Sonya, and the nurses at John Muir hospital in Walnut Creek. Sonya met me at the hospital, oversaw my care the entire time I was there, and when it was time to push, she was calming, reassuring me every step of the way, and guiding the entire labor process with the type of care I would’ve only expected if we were family; seriously, that amazing! She clearly loves her job, found her calling, and all the other clichés that just won’t do her justice. In closing, trusting Dr. Wells and the office he has carefully assembled is the best decision I made during my pregnancy!

I super love Dr. Wells and his staff! He is a life saver! We really appreciate all his works and efforts he provided me. If not for him, we probably still be waiting for our little one. Dr. Wells was with me all through out. from removing my huge fibroid to pregnancy to safe c-​section delivery. Whenever I visit his office, he and his staff would always make me feel comfortable and my spirits high! I also love Amber and Monica! :)

Dr. Wells, is the best OBGY doctor in Northern Ca. His professional, caring, kind, well experience doctor. I have changed at least 30 OB doctors, no one is like Dr. Wells. His surgery is Unique. I can say he can close his eyes and does surgery. You are on the best hand with this doctor. God created him to make women’s problem comfortable. I wish I knew him 30 years ago. Bless you doctor wells and your family.

Easily the best obgyn I have been to, from the friendly front desk receptionists to the excellent care the doctors and nurses provide. They were great at staying in touch with me throughout my pregnancy with test results and other things I needed to know. They always took time to make sure I got to ask any questions I had.
Sonya delivered my baby and she was amazing. My delivery and recovery went great. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
We will be moving soon and I hope I can find another practice I like as much as dr. Wells office for future pregnancies.

I was a patient of Dr. Wells for some time, he delivered 3 of my children and 2 of which were vbacs. I ended up moving after my first child was born but still made the 1 hour and 15 minute drive one way, just for his care because I really think he is an amazing doctor and I trusted Dr. Wells with my life when it came to delivering my children. Fast forward to surprise baby number 4, I started my pregnancy with a local to me now doctor because I wanted to see if it was possible to find someone comparable that is VBAC friendly because having 3 kids and and being a stay at home mom, well it’s hard to make the trip and arrange for babysitting with family for appointments. I realized after a couple appointments with the new doctor it just was not going to work out and I was not happy with the only hospital choice I could have doing a VBAC.
After much consideration of the pros and cons I decided I wanted to make the extra trip just to be with a doctor I trusted. So I spoke with family and was so happy that I would actually be able to arrange sitting so I could have Dr. Wells be the one to deliver my 4^th and final baby via vbac. However, upon calling his office I was told that he would no longer see me at all anymore as a patient just because I tried out a closer doctor to see how things would work out because In reality it is much easier on me seeing someone closer. I was totally surprised that after being a patient with doctor wells since 2008 that under my circumstances he would just dismiss a patient like that. The sad part about it all really is that when his receptionist put me on hold to ask if I could schedule and gave him the circumstances he could not even get on the phone and explain to me himself why he would no longer see me as patient. I can see if I maybe started the pregnancy with him, left, then wanted to start seeing him again, yea maybe then I could see possibly dismissing me as a patient. However under the circumstances, I am just shocked by Dr. Wells. I drove 2.5 hours round trip through 2 pregnancies for his care and I have referred friends to him as well. I just think it was unfair to dismiss someone for the reason he did and a tad unprofessional.
I am now about half way through my pregnancy and hoping I’ll find another doctor in the walnut creek area that is pro vbac like Dr. Wells is.

I could almost cry writing this review because you don’t really realize how good the quality of care you are receiving is until you have to experience it with someone else.
I lived in San Francisco and Walnut Creek from 2002 – 2014. I delivered my first baby girl in March 2014. Dr. Wells delivered her after a voluntary (but necessary) induction. I was due that weekend but I am only 5ft 2 inches tall and was experiencing pretty severe back pain. The induction went successful and my baby was born with no complications. Additionally, my post partum recovery went very well. I healed quickly and of the 44 pounds I gained during pregnancy I lost 36 of them by 9 months post partum. My daughter was only 19 inches at birth and now measures 32 at 12 months. I think the level of care I received, the attention paid to taking pre natals, calcium supplements and iron helped ensure her health long term. His booklet of resources and planning guided me through so much.
Additionally, my deductible with my insurance was very high. I had a PPO. Although Dr. Wells has nothing to do with healthcare costs his office staff was more than accommodating, allowing me to pay monthly. We have since paid for baby #1 and now are expecting baby #2 unfortunately, in another state.
When my husband and I moved all we said was who will deliver our next baby? We’ve considered renting an apartment in California just to go back to him to deliver our son, but can’t do that.
Enjoy your pregnancy and have faith in yourself and Dr. Wells.

Best pregnancy and birth experience ever. Dr. Wells is amazing and his midwife, Sonya, is a true gem. I was lucky enough to have her there during my delivery and she was absolutely incredible. I get sad thinking they won’t be the ones caring for me during my next pregnancy since we are moving. 5+ stars in my book!

Dr Wells was my OB when I gave birth to my first born. He’s a very competent doctor and he makes sure you and your baby’s health comes first. I had to give birth 3 weeks early and I was relieved that dr wells was there to perform my csection. I came to him when I was already in my 3^rd trimester and still, him and his staff took me in with open arms. Everybody in this office is awesome. I definitely recommend this place

Dr. Wells was my surgeon last week. He has a great bedside manner, and is a confident and skilled Dr. He came highly recommended and now I know why. I highly recommend Dr. Wells.

Unfortunately I once believed Dr Wells deserved the five star review I had written for him and his staff.
However, after having a total hysterectomy two years ago at the age of 33 due to unrelenting pelvic pain was an extremely difficult decision to make because my husband and I had been trying to have children of our own for three years and my eggs were basically locked inside me and no matter what approach we tried, they couldn’t be extracted to freeze for later use, like with a surrogate. So when Dr Wells said he’d be happy to perform this operation and take out my ovaries, tubes, uterus, & cervix to try to help with the enormous pain BUT if it doesn’t help your pain then there is nothing more I can do to help you, that should have been a red flag. It turns out three weeks post surgery the pain had not gone away and in fact was far worse. I was relegated to a bed for weeks at a time in too much pain to walk or function in any way. When I called Dr Wells to report my situation he was literally offended that I was telling him I still needed help for the pain. He abandoned me as a patient at that moment by telling me not to ever call his office again and to never come back and to find a pain management dr.
It turns out after another year of doctors appts, tests, etc. that I have a severe condition called IC which is related to the bladder and not the reproductive organs. It’s a chronic very difficult disease to treat but it’s common enough that Dr Wells should have seen the signs and linked me up with a urologist rather than taking out my entire reproductive system leaving me unable to have children. Even worse I was scared and suffering in pain so severe I was felt as though death might come at any time.
If you suffer from severe pain in your low abdomen, low back and/​or pelvic & vaginal region, and it is labeled ‘chronic pelvic pain’ without any real diagnosis, please see a urologist, Dr. Payne at Stanford or Dr. Deng at UCSF are two wonderful options who can identify if you have a bladder condition rather than performing an unnecessary surgery and taking away your ability to have children.
P. S. We adopted a beautiful baby and we are simply overjoyed at the love we have for our angelic baby boy, so if you want to become a mom and can’t have kids on your own, there are tons of babies who need someone like you in their lives!

I have been seeing Dr. Jennifer Boyce for about 10 years. She always makes me feel incredibly welcome and at ease. I am always greeted with open arms, and she really takes the time to listen. Dr. Jennifer makes my not-​so-​favorite yearly checkup into an easy-​going appoint, and she knows how to make me feel more relaxed and less anxious.
On top of that, the office is clean and tidy, and the ladies that work the front are kind and energetic. Amazing OBGYN!!!

I am not a fan of negative reviews as I am in the service industry myself but this one was absolutely necessary. I have never left a doctors office feeling more down than I did today!
If you aren’t married and are sexually active– this is not the doctor for you. I was under the impression that questions are asked by your health provider to get a better understanding of your HEALTH history– not to get a better understanding of your lifestyle to pass judgement on. Unfortunately I will not be going back to Stephen Wells as I was highly offended by his remarks, which he then concluded with, ‘I’m sorry I didn’t mean to be offensive.‘
I needed a doctor, not my Dad. Let’s work on being a little more professional and saving the fatherly advice for your own daughters and your views on abstinence to yourself.

When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, I looked into seeing a midwife for my prenatal care. I was surprised to find out that midwives weren’t allowed to deliver at John Muir, my in-​network hospital.
So, I asked around and was referred to Dr. Wells by a literal dozen women. I liked him off the bat, but imagine my joy when, halfway through my pregnancy, he hired a midwife to care for the low-​risk pregnancies (like mine) in his practice! Best of both worlds! He jumped through a considerable number of hoops to make this happen, and Sonya became the first midwife to get delivery privileges at John Muir.
And Sonya? Sonya is an absolute gem — my appointments with her felt like chats with a good girlfriend. I was very sensitive about my weight gain, but her stance was that if I was getting some exercise, eating a variety of foods, and didn’t have GD, she wasn’t gonna bug me about it. What a relief! Yet, she was extremely responsive whenever I did have an issue I wanted to talk to her about, whether it required a prescription or just more information. She never, but never, talked down to me or spoke dismissively when I had a concern.
Concerning the actual birth, it was a DREAM. My first, with my son (and a different doc in a different area of the country), had been absolutely horrible. This time, I got everything I wanted: a peaceful, safe, and QUICK birth! Through it all, Sonya was calm and positive and kind. At one point, I became so nauseous lying on my back that I almost passed out. Sonya improvised and said, «Hey — no prob. You can push from your side.» Five quick pushes later, and I was holding my gorgeous, healthy daughter.
Lastly, it wouldn’t be fair not to mention the support personnel at Dr. Wells’ office. You won’t meet a sweeter, happier front desk person than Amber. She greeted me by name and we always had a fun little exchange. The back office help was just as great, easy to reach and knowledgeable and friendly whenever I had a question about insurance or bills. And the medical assistants, like Maria, were so welcoming and friendly.
Frankly, you CANNOT go wrong with hiring Dr. Wells & Team to take care of you and your baby. They are THE BEST! :)

Another 5 star review!!! I just couldn’t resist. Dr. Wells and his team are the best, and I recommend them without reservation. When I became pregnant with my daughter, I was seen by another obstetrics group in Walnut Creek. Somehow or another, I seemed to fall through the cracks there. Dates for screenings were narrowly missed (and only because I caught them), follow up appointments were not scheduled at regular intervals; it just wasn’t a fit. Once we found Dr. Wells (via personal recommendation) we never fell through the cracks, always felt heard and respected, and never looked back.
When it became apparent that my lil lady was frank breech and that I would most likely need a scheduled c-​section, Dr. Wells was amazing. For the record, we did try the external cephalic version, but because of her positioning, it just didn’t work. Even through that painful procedure, Dr. Wells was so good to us. When it came time for my baby’s delivery, I wasn’t even nervous. «Cool as a cucumber» is how my husband describes Dr. Wells, and his confidence is contagious. He’s so competent, professional and caring. My c-​section went perfectly and our baby girl was safely delivered very quickly.
My family recently relocated, and I am seriously considering making the drive to Walnut Creek (about 1.5 hours) just to keep Dr. Wells as my OB/​GYN. For such a sensitive type of care (both obstetrics and gynecology), it’s hard to just leave such an incredible practice behind! Both the PA (Jennifer) and the NP (Monica) are equally as professional and likable as Dr. Wells. I had multiple appointments with all three of these fabulous practitioners, and have no complaints (which honestly is saying something– I have high standards). Thank you, Dr. Wells and team for doing what you do!

I also went to dr. Wells as a 2^nd opinion after being told I would have to go to a pain clinic by Kaiser. When I went in I wasn’t expecting a whole lot even though I had read all the awesome reviews. I had to wait a while (I’m pretty sure they worked me in). But my wait was not in vain. Dr Wells confirmed I wasn’t crazy. He was very laid back but very knowledgeable. For me this is kind of a big deal. I’ve always had an issue with a male doctor talking to me about girl parts they don’t have. But listening to him, he reads all the same medical journal articles I did. For me that’s kind of a big deal. You want a Dr. that will keep up on the latest studies. You want a progressive doctor. For me that’s a huge deal as I have been in pain off and on for the last 19 years with my uterus.
He is a bit of a joker. I believe he can be serious too, but for me the joking is my kind of doctor. He wants you to be at ease and seriously I love the humor!
After all my issues with my previous doctors balking at the idea of a hysterectomy, Dr. Wells said he could do it, however I was not allowed to make the decision right there (trust me I tried). He wrote down the name of the syndrome that was causing me such pain and told me to go home and research it. I did and already had been researching for a few months.
My first appointment consisted of going over my history. I have been In The ER for my uterus and ovaries numerous times. I have had several surgeries regarding my girl parts. Included endometriosis, blood filled cysts, regular cysts, and the latest problem was having a lining show up on a sonogram after an ablation had removed my entire lining. I was thinking cancer, but Dr. Wells did a sonogram right there that showed I had fluid trapped in my Fallopian tube from scar tissue after my ablation.
Anyways I got myself scheduled for a hysterectomy a few days later. I am 2 weeks post op now and feel better than I have in years. I have no more pressure in my pelvic area, no more back pain, and I am constantly telling myself I need to slow down because I just had a major surgery. Like literally I still have internal stitches. But it feels so good to be happy and pain free! I have been off pain pills for about a week now. My overnight in the hospital was a bit of a drag but when I went home I feel like I was able to start my recovery.
Update** I just realized I never finished this review. I am now seven months post op. I have a whole new hold on life. I know it sounds cheesy, but literally I have lost 40 pounds and am able to be the active person that all my pain was hiding before.
FYI — If you need a surgical procedure, he’s really good. He wants to have very little pain for you. I had a Davinci Procedure done so it was all robotic, which I believe (and Dr. Wells believes) speeds up you recovery time.
Like all the other Unilocalers who have commented on the wait. Yes there is sometimes a LONGGGG wait. But keep in mind… when you are in a room with him and you have cancer, or have just lost a baby… you want the doctor to spend a little extra time with you to answer questions or a shoulder to cry on. It happens… And if you don’t have to spend that extra time with him, be grateful. :)
