Business Owner

Professor Lucia Kanter St. Amour teaches Negotiation and Mediation as part of UC Hastings’ Center for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution. She is also a Lecturer at UC Berkeley Law School (Boalt Hall) and Guest Lecturer at Stanford Law School, among other institutions in the U.S. an Europe.

She earned her Mediator Certification from Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation and has mediated cases for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; the Department of Fair Employment and Housing; San Francisco Superior Court; City and County of San Francisco; the Dept of Industrial Relations; and various school districts. She consults and mediates general civil and business disputes for U.S., Europe and Hong Kong based businesses; community disputes; and specializes in U.S. based employment and special education related disputes. She is regularly invited to teach and train in Negotiation and Mediation at universities and businesses in the U.S. and Europe. See website for full bio.

1. Lucia was the first to call me out of the 3 or 4 places I contacted.
2. The minute she started talking to me on the phone I knew I didn’t need to talk to anyone else.
3. She laid everything out for me over the course of our time working together — she got into details where needed, let me know my options, even helped me with what exactly to say in conversations and emails with the person I was in negotiations with.
In the end I did something I would have never been able to pull off on my own (basically, propose a separation agreement that wasn’t part of my employment agreement, or take other actions), and I got exactly what I asked for out of the negotiations.
When I first talked to Lucia on the phone she mentioned that I could try and do this myself — write up the agreement and do the negotiations — if getting help from an attorney was too expensive. She told me what to look up and provided options for different levels of help from her at different costs. I considered taking it on myself — I’ve written my own contracts before. But there was a sizable amount of money on the line for me not to invest in the right help, and BOY did I realize immediately that I could have never pulled this off without Lucia. Not only in drawing up the documents, but doing it in a way that allowed room for negotiations that would still end up in my favor. AND all the help in coming up with the right things to say (and not to say).
I’m so so glad I found Lucia and went with her on this — I learned a ton and I would recommend her in a heartbeat.

I worked with Lucia in resolving a complicated problem regarding workplace safety issue and she was our attorney during the mediation. The mediation concluded in a satisfactory manner within the timeframe and Lucia was able to guide me through the process by keeping me focused on my goals while staying positive. I was lucky enough to have Lucia teach my negotiations class at Berkeley Law, which proved to be a turning point in my legal education. You know how a truly inspirational teacher can make the most boring subject interesting? Well, I happen to think alternative dispute resolution is a fascinating counterbalance to the litigation-​based instruction of law school, but I’d want to take any course offered by Lucia. In fact, she inspired me to undertake many further studies in dispute resolution, both at Berkeley and as a visiting student at Harvard Law. Having learned from, and worked with, some of the finest minds in the field, I can say without hesitation that Lucia is the best in the business — which is why I asked Lucia to oversee my written research with regard to dispute resolution.

I have known Lucia Kanter for many years and have assisted in her negotiations and mediation classes at UC Hastings, where I went to law school. I also represented her in the purchase, resale and second purchase of homes in San Francisco. She is a shrewd and tough negotiatior but always has the objective in mind — try to make the deal work for everyone. She is a pleasure to work with and while I watch her teach mediation and negotiation skills, I always learn something knew.
I would recommend Lucia for any situation where a skilled mediator/​negotiator was needed. She is intelligent, responsive, keys in on the issues immediately and is always attentive to every detail. She would be my first choice if I needed a mediator or negotiator!

I worked with Lucia in resolving a complicated problem with an employee that seemed sure to end in a lawsuit. Thanks to her, it didn’t, and the conflict was actually resolved fairly quickly without a relative minimum of drama.
It becomes obvious quickly after you begin talking with her that Lucia has tremendous experience in the theory and practice of mediation. She truly knows how to actively listen, identify (or help clarify) underlying interests/​needs, overcome sticking points in discussions to move them forward, and then come up with a creative solution that fits your specific circumstances.
Even more importantly — especially in the employment matter she helped us resolve — Lucia has an innate ability to «read» people and navigate through emotionally intense situations. She has a sophisticated understanding of human dynamics, and picks up on emotions (whether explicit or not) and understands how they contribute to a conflict situation. She seems to know intuitively which techniques are most effective with different people. In our case, she had a definite knack for cutting through the tension and helping the two sides better understand each other (which I frankly did not think was possible under the circumstances).
Lucia also has a way of making you feel like the only person in the world while she is working with you. If you work with Pactum Factum, you will be in good hands. Very strongly recommended.

In a negotiation, I would want her on my side! In a mediation, I would want her in the room! Lucia Kanter St. Amour is an expert in interpersonal dynamics. While I know her only in the context of a negotiations course, it seems obvious that her knowledge of negotiations and of teaching both inform her ability to perform as an excellent mediator. Professor Kanter taught my Negotiations class at UC Berkeley School of Law, and she changed my life!
She was an absolutely wonderful professor, and I have recommended her class to all my law school colleagues. She is the most dedicated professor I have ever had, with a genuine interest in her student’s life, development, and personal well-​being. She was a breath of fresh air!
She is an expert at Negotiations, as she takes every opportunity that she has to practice negotiations, as she knows that even the most futile and trivial interactions are expressions of negotiations, and as she excels at them. Her passion for the topic is evident in the way she speaks and she acts. Professor Kanter always gave us very strong examples of negotiations she partook in, and gave us a lot to be impressed with! She is extremely skilled, and knows all the intricacies involved in Negotiations. She arranged for us to attend a «Micro-​Expressions» conference, and along with the classes she taught us, I learned immensely.
