History
Established in 2000.
Knowles and Murphy was created soon after the marriage of Mary Knowles and Roy Murphy in March of 2000. Mary has a long history of art and design, and studied landscape architecture at UC Extension. She decided to specialize in residential landscape design, having created a beautiful garden of her own which started her enduring interest and study of horticulture, a special skill she brings to every project. Roy Murphy is a Landscape Contractor, his license dating back to 1988. He has worked in every phase of landscape installation and maintenance and enjoys new challenges that often arise in this profession. Installation of ponds and waterfalls, pondless waterfalls, retaining walls of all kinds, drainage solutions, concrete, unit pavers, creative work with natural stone, and various wood and metal garden structures are some of the specific skills he offers. Knowles & Murphy has transformed tiny spaces into jewelbox gardens and large properties into showplaces.

Business Owner
Roy Murphy has worked in the landscape profession since he was a young man in Los Angeles. He moved to the central east bay to raise his family and worked as a sales manager for local jewelry stores, but as his children went on to college he returned to landscaping, a profession he had always enjoyed and did well at. He started his own landscape contracting business in 1988 and was on the recommended contractor list for two popular landscape designers working in the east bay in the 1990’s. As Mary Knowles was starting her landscape design work in the 90’s, they started working together on a free-lance basis and came to realize they made a good team, which is still true in 2013.
