I have know Alex close to 5 years now. I have seen his rise from novice to world class brown belt and soon to be black belt. If you are in the area consider yourself lucky to learn from one of the best nog jiu jitsu instructors in the bay area.

While Iron Monkey has many classes, I can only speak to the no gi jiu jitsu for adults, which is superb. Alex is a patient, technical instructor who personalizes instruction for each of his students. He always has great feedback for me whenever I work with him. The greatest compliment I ever got on the mat, was when someone said my style reminded them of Alex’s.

This review relates to Alex, the jiu jitsu instructor, specifically. I’ve had the pleasure to train with Alex many times. He is a very skilled grappler with a very technical game. This may be because Alex competes in the smaller weight classes, but his style is based very much on technique, angles, and leverage, not strength or size. He’s also a really nice guy. Definitely recommended if you want to learn no gi grappling.

This place is a complete nogi jiu jitsu gym. In addition to friendly and playful atmosphere, Alex, the head instructor, runs adults and kids classes mixed with great students at various levels. Alex is a high level practitioner himself who has competed in some of the highest level tournaments around the country and has many distinguished wins along the way. His teaching style is based on flexibility, attention to detail, and support for his students.
The facility itself is large, extremely clean, and has new mats. I highly recommend this gym for nogi training across all ages, goals, and training objectives.

This is a new Jiu Jitsu academy opened by Alex Canders, one of Denny Prokopos’ top competitors. Alex is a life-​long martial artist who brought to the sport of BJJ all of the ingredients necessary to excel in the competition game: discipline, the ability to learn quickly and most importantly, humility.
Rarely have I seen someone excel so quickly. Canders is an amazingly hard worker in possession of a great work ethic. Not only has he performed great in tournaments but he’s also become an incredibly detailed instructor having really acquired the well-​rounded details needed to build an technical Jiu Jitsu game.
I highly recommend training under Alex if you’re looking to learn some of the most cutting-​edge no-​gi BJJ.

I’ve known Alex Canders since he started on his Bjj journey and bear witness to his exceptional progress. He went from being the guy that everyone walked through to competing at the highest level (at EBI, a broadcasted invite-​only competition) in just five years. He spent one year between getting a purple belt to getting a brown — task that normally requires 3 years of diligent training. Alex’s progress comes from his is dedication and his intelligent approach to learning.
In addition to being an excellent partitioner, he is a great teacher — one of the few that can communicate and illustrate the practices that yielded his progress. It shows in his students and I anticipate even greater things to come from an already great school.

This place rules. Top of the line mats and teaching. Canders is great. I’m an SF 10th planet brown belt and got to know Canders training and competing together. He was/​is a huge inspiration on the mat and in competition. I only started competing in absolute divisions this past year and I can honestly say it’s because of Canders. Weighing 20lbs less than me, he always goes in fearlessly to all absolute matches against guys much bigger than himself without any hesitation. So not only has he showed me a bunch of cool jiu jitsu tricks since I’ve known him, he’s taught me about courage.
