History

Established in 2008.

The store was established to provide Downtown Walnut Creek with a complete hardware, garden and lumber center after its beloved Simons Hardware closed in the mid 1990’s and left the community with no hardware store for over 10 years. Additionally, Walnut Creek lost Navlets Nursery and Piedmont Lumber over the next few years. Since 2008, the Walnut Creek community has embraced it’s new complete home, hardware and garden center and constantly seek out the help of our experienced and friendly staff. For fun, a G-​scale model railroad track is suspended from the ceiling and two trains chug along the length of the store all day long to the amusement of both young and old.

Kevin and his wife Deb, both Walnut Creek residents for over 30 years, own and run Downtown Walnut Creek Hardware. The store is not only locally owned, but also locally managed and staffed. Most staff make their homes in Walnut Creek.

Love this hardware store. So clean and well stocked. It’s conveniently located on Mt Diablo by the entrance to the 24 West. Just hop right on if you need to. The device Thursday far has been great, very friendly people with knowledge unlike most big box stores. Sorry no pics unless you’re interested in seeing two Clevis pins with retainers!

When I need something quick and don’t want to drive over to the overwhelming Home Depot, Ace Hardware is my go to spot. It’s close to my house and the employees here are generally cheerful and ready to help. I’ve always had a pleasant experience here and don’t forget to use their Unilocal $ 10 for $ 20 deal or $ 5 off a $ 30 purchase with checking into the Unilocal app. The $ 10 for $ 20 deal can only be used once but if you have more than one person in your household, then each person can buy it once.
Prices are reasonable and parking is easy. Afterwards you can easily drive a few blocks away to downtown WCR for some shopping or dining. Score!

If those big box stores give you the fits, this Ace is for you! Conveniently located near downtown Walnut Creek it has ample parking. They sell everything from hard to find water filters to work clothes, small appliances to every kind of battery and light bulb you need. It is also a great place to grab a holiday gift or last minute touches for your Christmas tree. They have a great outdoor center for patio furniture, plants, BBQs etc.
The employees are knowledgeable, friendly and eager to help.
Love the old time train running above. It adds a touch to remind you of what an old fashioned hardware store is about!

The first time we went here was to buy a few missing screws for assembling our IKEA bed. The staff here helped us very patiently to pick up missing parts. They have an exhaustive collection of hardware to choose from and it can be intimidating without the help from the staff here. We went again because one of our screwdrivers had a loose head and this time we were even more surprised when the person just mended it for free for us. He was so patient and helpful. I can’t imagine a service done for free in these days. Five stars for the staff here. This is simply the best hardware store in walnut Creek and what makes it even better is the $ 10 for $ 20 deal on Unilocal.We have also bought other stuff like cleaning mop and trash bags from here and all items here are very high quality. I’m a big time fan of this store!!!

They close at 6 on sunday. I got there at 6. I mean depending on who’s clock you’re looking at I could have been there at 5:57. I was making a return or at least trying to but a man holding the door closed just shook his head while other people in line were being serviced. Didn’t even speak to me. I just needed to quickly exchange a defective racoon trap they sold me. It was my first and now last purchase from this location.

Michael and Leslie from the paint department were very courteous, knowledgeable, and accommodating for us first time painters! We have been visiting the store for just over a year now and always receive high quality service.
We mostly visit the outdoor living section as we purchased a Big Green Egg from there last year. We have since been back a lot of accessories and rubs.sauces.
Every time we go we are always greeted so warmly. We are always offered excellent advice and given exceptional service. Throw in the great offers we get in the mail from Ace regularly as well.
I recommend anyone who likes BBQ to visit this store. All staff are very helpful but I would like to highlight Regina as someone who provides exemplary service.

After having read the owner’s response to my initial review, I feel compelled to downgrade my review. Not only was his response generic and made no effort to actually remedy the situation, but from the profile picture, I can tell that it was actually him who made the decision at the time I was in the store of how to handle the situation and it was abundantly clear to me at the time that he had no interest in my continued business. Not to mention that a store is actually required to honor its own pricing/​stocking mistakes. Kevin F., if you are actually reading this yourself, I have already spent a significant amount of money at your store in the past and if you are sincerely interested in keeping me as a customer, I hope to receive a more genuine effort.

Great place! We stop by here occasionally to purchase items for our garden. The outdoor gardening area has a large variety of plants and pottery. Everything is also reasonably priced. In general, Ace Hardware offers the usual hardware store type goods, with departments such as tools, plumbing, electrical, hardware, paint, garden and nursery, housewares, clothing, and lumber. Service is great. Most of the employees are pretty young, but, for the most part, everyone is pretty helpful and knowledgeable. Parking is relatively easy — there is a parking lot, which makes it easy to stop by whenever you need something. The store is also dog friendly, so Teddy occasionally joins us for our Ace Hardware trips. The employees offer him treats, too!

Knowledge over service.
I had a great experience at Ace Hardware. However I went in looking for bolts are pins for my wall because I needed to mount my 42 inch TV on the wall. The gentleman that helped me was super nice. But unfortunately the wall mounts he suggested did not hold my TV and now there’s a huge hole in my wall. Now I know nothing about hanging heavy items and that’s why I went to him asking exactly what I needed explaining how big my TV was and I even brought in the bracket in with the bolts but it didn’t hold and now I’m stuck with a big hole in my wall. I didn’t install the TV. I had my friend who has years of construction experience install it for me and he told me to ask the Ace Hardware guy exactly what amounts to get.
Nice guy. But would prefer someone that knew what they were talking about.

Giving these guys a good review is not necessarily a swipe at Lowes or Home Depot. Those places are like Costco for tools and home repairs, and that’s fine if you are getting ready to go on HGTV or something like that. But for the small fixer uppers that mine and most other houses need, staying close to home is usually the best way to go.
Staff is always pretty helpful, they don’t follow you around the store like a hawk. Nice garden selection, and they will cut plywood for you if that is what your project requires. And there is nothing wrong with buying «store brand» here, as the Ace name is as dependable as you can get as I have purchased gloves, hand tools, shop towels, trimmer wire, and paint with no problems.
Same thing applies to the other local locations, they have just what you need without having to travel too far.

This place is all hustle and bustle on the weekends!
If you need to get your DIY on, this neighborhood store really is the place to go.
They have good customer service, as well as good prices. The long line moves quickly because they have all of their registers staffed!
It’s a small parking lot for the number of customers who come here, but if you are patient and wait a few minutes, you’ll tend to get a spot pretty quickly :)

My main (and only) reason for coming here is their garden center. There are times I just don’t feel like making the trip to Navlet’s in Pleasant Hill or San Ramon, which are my two favorite places for plants. Ace Hardware has a decent section out in the back of the store with a variety of outdoor shrubs, flowers and other plants suitable for pots or ground planting.
I’ve found the service to be aloof and I don’t feel they can offer the knowledge or suggestions that the staff at Navlet’s does-that’s if you can even located anyone in the garden section at Ace. I’ve purchased some lavender plants here-​one did okay and one didn’t do so well, even though I followed the exact same regimen for them.
As far as other garden needs such as tools, soil and bark chips, I’ve found their prices to be slightly higher than say, Home Depot or Navlet’s.
I find Ace to be convenient and sufficient for some garden needs. They also have a Unilocal Check in offer for $ 5 off $ 30 spent (at least they did a month ago.)
Getting in and out of the parking lot can be a bit of a challenge depending on the time of day and if you have to make a left hand turn on or off Mt. Diablo Blvd. Ace Hardware is okay-​just not up to par with the type of garden center I feel Walnut Creek needs.

For the first time in our vacationing history we didn’t have someone house sit for us. We usually do so don’t get any robbery ideas.
I needed those timer lights for our home. Technology has really advanced in the world of timer lights.
During Christmas they have an electric train going around the whole store. Going around the whole store on a track, that is suspended from the ceiling. I guarantee that if you brought a kid in here to check it out they would go crazy for it.
The Christmas decorations are so crazy. They really go all out.
I found my timer lights. They have so many different types. I chose the ones with two time options in one.
I bought to many and had to return one when I got back. They worked perfectly and actually have now started timing it for when my son and I wake up and to go off by the time we leave.
One less thing I have to think about. Thank goodness.
