Specialties

Belly Dancer of the Year is an annual event featuring a belly dance workshop and belly dance competition. Professional belly dancers from the US, Europe, Asia, Canada, and Central America have traveled to compete for the most-​respected title on the belly dance circuit.

This year’s dates: May 28 – 29, 2015. Event will be held at the Orinda Library Theater in Orinda, California.

History

Established in 1973.

Belly Dancer of the Year is the longest-​running and most-​respected belly dance competition in the United States, drawing top dancers from around the globe. The event was created by professional dancer and instructor Sula Frick in 1973. When Sula passed away in 1978, her friend and student Leea Aziz continued producing the event in her memory. BDOY celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2013.

Jennifer is a professional belly dancer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has over 20 years of experience performing for Middle Eastern restaurants, charity and corporate events, and private celebrations. She began volunteering at Belly Dancer of the Year in 1993 and took over production of the event in 2013.

I once competed in this competition (as part of a troupe LOL — I was never that good of a dancer on my own). Of course, this was a billion years ago. I haven’t belly danced in nearly 10 years.
At the time, the contest was well-​run, friendly and very enjoyable to watch if you are a belly dance fan. Many of the dancers that compete are amazing. They even have (or had) a competition for older dancers. No shame if you are competing at that level because some of those mature dancers have been doing it for so many years, they put many a younger gal to shame.
The troupes are really fun to watch as well. You see some true gems.
So how did my troupe do that year? Second place! Lotta hard work and practice went into that.
If you are not a belly dance fan, give it a try or go and watch some great dancing. Some of these girls can do amazing things with their bodies.
For belly dancers, there are plenty of vendors who set up shop at the competition.
