Pendergrass Academy of Martial Arts is the only certified school in Wake Forest that offers black belt instruction of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). We offer BJJ programs for men, women, teens, and youth. Both the self defense and competition aspect of BJJ is taught at this academy. This includes not only traditional gi (uniform) training, but also no-​gi submission grappling. Within our youth program (Kid Jitsu) we provide character development as part of our overall curriculum. These can include bullyproofing, respect, confidence building, and a host of other important areas.

History

Established in 2006.

Pendergrass Academy was established to provide residents of the Wake Forest and surrounding areas with quality brazilian jiu jitsu instruction (BJJ). Head instructors Guy and Rob Pendergrass began there BJJ training in 1996 and eventually trained at the famed Renzo Gracie Academy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu located in New York City. After moving back to North Carolina Guy and Rob resumed there training with Gustavo Machado, 3rd degree black belt in brazilian jiu jitsu. Guy and Rob recieved their black belts from Gustavo in 2010.

I’ve only been here once so far but I am definitely a fan of this place. I never would have thought to take a class in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but my best friend is really into it and she invited me to come take a beginner’s class at her studio. I was all for it because I’m always looking for fun, new ways to work out and challenge my body.
I immediately fell in love with the people here. They were so welcoming and good natured. I can tell that they are really great with kids, so I would totally recommend taking your kids here for some martial arts training!
I’ll definitely come back and take some more classes for fun. Highly recommended!

My daughter wanted a martial arts class to join & someone told me about Pendergrass. We’ve been here five weeks and she has learned a lot! She enjoys each class and the instructors work very well with every age. She has more confident in her abilities. The staff is very personable and are involved. They also give the children parents and adult learners the opportunity to try out different classes. My ten year old enjoys the MMA-​Muay Thai Jr. Champion & Jiu Jitsu classes. Try it & stay!

I have known the head instructors (Guy and Rob) for about a decade now. They have always been nothing but class to me. The best part is that they both obviously care about all of the students.

I chose Pendergrass Academy of Martial Arts because I was looking for a Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu school that had not only knowledgeable instructors, but also an atmosphere that made for an enjoyable training environment. Pendergrass has surpassed my expectations.
The head instructors are both black belts. Both conduct class in a slightly different way that works off of each other. Both create a relaxed and fun environment to learn.
While instruction is important, excellent training partners are a necessity. The students of Pendergrass Academy are great. Everyone there will make you work but aren’t trying to hurt anyone or show off. We all want to help each other get better yet be able to get up in the morning.
The vibe is so friendly I find myself wanting to go to class even when I’m tired and don’t feel like training. I genuinely enjoy being around everyone and feel like I’ve improved leaps and bounds since I’ve joined.
