I love uncle George! He’s such a cool guy. He has a ridiculous amount of paddle boards, which I discovered after talking to him many times, were either bought, donated or he held a fundraiser to purchase. Before you can start using his paddle boards, you have to listen to his very inspirational story. He used to be a very active young man, and of course life happens. I won’t tell you the whole story because I don’t want to take away anything from what he has to say, but the purpose of his bay of dreams is really to help people get healthy and appreciate their environment. After his story, he does a quick lesson. Being a local who surfs, I kind of just learned the way the water/wind/paddles/boards work so it makes sense to me. But uncle George does a great job actually explaining it for those who might not be as familiar with it – I know I wouldn’t be able to so props to him for being a great teacher. Safety is extremely important to uncle George. He lets kids use paddle boards as long as they’re supervised or he believes they can handle it after the lesson. He also has a donation jar he leaves out. I always try to leave money even if he tells me not too. I support what he’s doing and am grateful for the many inspirational conversations and opportunities he has given me to experience life in the bay.

I had been wanting to try SUP with Uncle George for awhile, and finally made it out when a friend was visiting from the mainland. Pokai Bay is such a beautiful place, and being out there when the water is calm in the early morning is very peaceful. I have gone twice now. Last month with my cousins and friend, and this past weekend with my husband, cousin and friends. When you first sit down and«talk story» with Uncle George, his story is very inspirational, and you get the sense that if he could do it and not give up, anyone can. The lesson was really helpful in giving us newbies tips on how best to handle the paddle and where to stand on the board. First time out, the water was very calm and we paddled all around the bay. Second time, the current was a bit rough once you go past the protection of the rock wall, and I lost my balance. Tips: Go early and beat the crowd. Also, it’s not too hot first thing in the morning, sun isn’t beating down too bad, I am so excited about doing SUP and plan on trying to come out at least 2 – 3 times a month. Mahalo for sharing your gift and blessing us with SUP Uncle George!

Free paddle board lessons in exchange for a sticker representing where you were visiting from so Uncle George can put them on his Bay of Dreams trailer. Free SUP lessons. Beautiful bay and beach. Positive vibes. What more could you ask for? Maybe better restaurants nearby to satisfy the hunger you developed during your SUP workout. Uncle George has wonderful volunteers, some take pictures for the Facebook site. Maybe you will find yourself there which is something of a virtual souvenir.

My husband and I were extremely new to the island, so what better way to get out than to volunteer? We went to the first«Clean the Bay» event! A nice amount of wonderful people from around the island and several bases showed up to help clean up! After we were treated to free SUP lessons from Uncle George! Uncle George introduced himself and shared his story of how he has used SUP to turn his life around and become a healthier man. So now, he has given back by sharing his love for SUP by teaching others to love and enjoy the earth that god has given us! After a short lesson he matched us with boards and paddles and we were off! My husband and I spent a good 3 hours in the bay and it was extremely relaxing and so much fun! Uncle George to say the least, is a godsend. He is so kind, so loving and I couldn’t have asked for a better instructor! This was a fantastic introduction to the island, a super fun first SUP experience and an unforgettable man and his family! If you are ever in the area, please, go say hi to uncle george and take in this wonderful angel that has been put on this earth! Uncle George posts when he will be out at the bay here, go like his page and make sure to put the bay of dreams down on your calendar!
