Wahiawa General Hospital

Haven’t been since the renovation was complete. Staff was awesome, even with my child puking all over the wait area. They were kind, patient, and quick. The doctor was great, and we were in and out quickly.

A bad fall on my mom’s hip sent us to the ER Friday night, and it was busy! They had several very tricky situations happening there, but treated us so kindly and professionally anyway. They apologized for not being able to treat us as quickly as they would have liked to, but honestly, we thought they were right on top of everything. The staff that night was the most courteous and cheerful staff I have encountered at any ER. Well done, Wahiawa General! You gave us expert care, and I’m so happy that you are still open and available to all of us mid-​island and up-​north.

Always always there when I’m in a crisis, I’ll been taking care since the 80s loving you can stay open. Thank you for helping me and my family. And I love the new upgrade the emergency room is so beautiful all the staff are very professional and I hope they don’t close

It’s too bad the hospital might be closing down. I still remember taking my father in for a gout attack, and the nurse and doctors there were all friendly and helpful. It was a long wait, but they made it go by fast, talking with us, and getting the paperwork done, and basically keeping us distracted while we wait. I didn’t know what a gout was back then, now I’m not so worry when it came back, and I can help my father prevent it from coming back.

Received excellent care from both nurses and doctor while treated for dehydration. Doctor sent a food plate to the ER cause I hadn’t eaten all day, that had never happened for me.

Well, this is Wahiawa… and what els would you expect from this hospital? it is very old and run down.
I’ve had a few very unpleasant experiences here, but mostly great experiences. This particular visit included a doctor visit for my husband, there are lots of chairs in the lobby for waiting, and lots of parking, but we never seem to have a problem with it? maybe the hospital isn’t that crowded? It surely beats most hospitals with a parking garage anytime!
From my past couple of ER visits (dehydration, twice and stitches once) the ER staff and doctors were very professional, and so caring. It was a synch to check-​in, they have a small room next to the check-​in that they do a your weigh in, temperature, blood pressure etc, and a doctor will ask you some questions about your visit. A few years back, the ER use to be chaotic, I’ve had some bad memories and experience in the past. but not lately I’ve had better experiences lately. It looks like they are also working on an expansion to the ER room? That would make it even better and much needed.

Got taken to the ER and i have to say hear stories about Wahiwa hospital i was bit skeptical @first! But i statted thinking hey they have nurses n doctors that are just as good! They took care of me with love and compassion and did there very BEST to take care of me! They have even are doing some remodeling so things are new! So before you start listening to stories you should fine out on your own! I could be a matter of life and death!

Let’s be realistic in our reviews folks.
Wahiawa General is a good hospital as far as its facilities are concerned. The building’s exterior, interior infrastructure are dated and income is required on their behalf to make improvements. As of this Review, the Emergency Room (ER) is under construction. Improvements are being made.
The staff in the ER are so kind and professional. The senior nurse (whose name fails me now) was so kind and gently. There were, at one point in time, two male nurses squeezing two IVs in my arms for emergency necessity. I couldn’t be moved to the admittance rooms until I stabilized. It took three hours and the whole time I was visited by all sorts of specialists who were kind, gentle, knowledgeable, informative, and professional. Thank you goes out to all of them on Saturday night, 9pm-​12am, January 31^st, 2015. My ER Doctor was CHUNG.
Once admitted, I was wheeled on a gurney to a room on 5 °F and entered my room. There was a television, hospital bed, and all the standard medical equipment. I was examined thoroughly, provided more oxygen and IV fluids, and left to rest. I couldn’t sleep there. Lots of strange things going on and I was visited so often by different people, i.e. the phlebotomist, nurse’s aid taking vitals, nurses checking on me, and others.
Saturday, then Sunday passed. I wasn’t hungry and, therefore, didn’t eat. Did you know your food intake, excretions, and more are monitored throughout the day? Strange. On Monday came the battery of examinations: X-​Rays, Nuclear Medicine, Stress Test, and more. I was throughout the hospital and over the course of two nights and three days I had seen a minimum of 50 – 60 different people.
I was so well cared for and their medical equipment is tops: modern, operated with experience, and exact. I had never seen such a well-​run machine, or, should I say, one in Wahiawa! I’ve been to the ER a few times and did not have a good impression of them. Being admitted I learned that the ER is quick: intake, assessment, treatment, monitoring, action, and admittance or release. It, once again, is a well-​run machine. My doctor of admittance was Dr. WONG.
Please review my photos and remember: they are NOT scary, dirty, unprofessional, or slow. Everything has it’s time and place. They are professionals and know when something needs to be done. Let’s hope for the best in your health; however, if you’re in the area and need assistance, don’t fear Wahiawa General. They care.

I finally admitted to myself that I needed help at 11:30pm on Wednesday night. I am a new HMSA member, and they have an online care system and 24-​hour phone lines. Unfortunately, neither option was functioning, so the technical support staff member stayed with me on the phone until I figured out what was best. She even suggested ER was a good option. I was scared to drive myself, and didn’t feel like I needed an ambulance, because i had had the same symptoms for a week, and they just weren’t subsiding. I knew I wasn’t dying, so I didn’t want to take up a bed that someone would desperately need.
Instead, I drove through 2 hours of rush hour traffic in the morning to be the first walk in and I was misdiagnosed at 8 am at an HMSA partner urgent care clinic close to my work in Honolulu. I spent the next 8 hours following the suggestions of the intake physician’s assistant with no relief to my symptoms: I was sent to get prescriptions, then xrays, then different prescriptions, all the while clearly stating that the pain behind my eyes was affecting my driving. The condition did not improve and it took 2 ½ hours of making multiple calls and wait up to 90 minutes to try again after getting no response. Finally got in touch after exhausting every option, and the final advice was ER. I still had to finish the second of my 2 jobs for the day and did so as best i could. After I got home, all i wanted to do was sleep, but knew that sleep wasn’t helping heal my body. So I sucked it up, drove myself there, and was received with kindness, efficient and incredibly effective care.
I have always considered ER treatment to be used only in life-​threatening situations. I will no longer hesitate to ask for help if there is no other immediate safe option available nearby. Waiting and going through the ‘urgent’ health care system was discouraging and did not help at all, it actually made things worse and brought me more discomfort, and the trouble driving put others at risk as well.
Huge Mahalo to the positive energy, empathy, support and care to the best staff I have ever encountered. I have lived here for 11 years, and have never been to the emergency room. I know it should not be used except for emergency, but my situation became just that, and I no longer fear the process. I feel soooooooo much better after coming in. I am sorry I waited so long. Never again will I hesitate to get help when in serious pain.

4 stars for their ER: here we are in town visiting relatives & hubby comes down sick. We knew w/​his symptoms, he was likely to have his nasty cough turn into bronchitis. On our way back from North Shore, we pull into the ER at Wahiawa. Yep, definitely old school hospital, tiny ER parking lot; it’s a rainy day & of course, ER is full. All that being said, from check in, to his vitals being checked by the nurse, to the Doc & attending nurse that treated him: all these folks were lovely, kind, attentive, & cheerful. Insurance went w/​out a hitch, no worries there. Very different experience than past mainland ER visits. I would say that from the time we checked in at the desk to departure w/​scripts in hand was ~30 minutes. Right, didn’t I say their ER was full? What? Only 30 minutes & not the requisite hour that our local ER’s take? Here’s what else we liked: we were asked to wait outside on the covered lanai (yes, there was a breeze & yes, still lightly raining but, it was covered & we had our rain gear on). It was far healthier to be out on the lanai & not inside a packed ER. They didn’t want hubby inside hacking his lungs out anymore than we wanted to be around anyone else who was sick. Good move on their part because a few days later, yours truly has been hacking her lungs out. On the bright side, this is after we’ve returned from our trip. Well, on downside, I’d rather be coughing in Hawaii than here in the mainland. :-)

As I waited outside for my dad to arrive in the ambulance. I observed that 3 ambulances got there before the ambulance which my dad was in. One by one the nurses took care of everyone. They were very friendly n fast to help my dad out even though the emergency room was really busy. I salute the doctor n nurses on a job well done. Not only for helping my dad but for helping each and everyone in the emergency room.

I came in here with burn wounds and they were pretty on it over here. Usually
I love Pali Momi, but this was closer to my boyfriends house. They treated my burns (all over my face and neck) and gave me two shots of pain meds to stop the pain. They also sent me home with more pain meds because the shots would eventually ware off. I am very impressed with how attentive they were. I literally thought my face was going to burn away. I’m glad the workers were very kind and concerned for me. Great place.

Many years ago we had our first negative run in with the staff. my grandfather was admitted for a situation and was held there for a couple weeks. they left him in his diaper for a couple days which caused a rash and mad him even more uncomfortable. a few years later we brought my grandmother there and she was treated for a short period of time, for just a bump on the head, which we found was a much larger problem then they had told us. Recently, my grandfather was admitted for back pains from an incident and they sent him on his way with Tylenol to help with the pain. his pains became worse and unbearable after a while and we admitted him to another hospital where we found out he had 3 fractures on his spin… he soon after passed from his injuries.
the wait time in their ER is ridiculous! Granted, its not their fault that there are a lot of people injured and in need of care but whats stopping them from trying to improve staff, increase staff and better assist their patience? if majority of the other hospitals are able to care for their ER patience or patience in general why can’t they? if they need funds to run a section of the hospital property, why have it if they can’t care for people at highest potential. if they know they are unable to care for people at the best of their ability, why do so? it looks like to me the positives of them operation is being overwhelmed by their negatives.
I think if a single hospital has multiple incidence posted where someone’s life was lost because of their lack of care… RED FLAG! i could care less what it looks like, just give people the care they need! no one who just got shot or is suffering of pain is going to shop for hospitals?! YES they are going to the nearest hospital possible! being that they know they are the only hospital on that side of the island they should better improve themselves.
That place does NOT deserve stars!

The hospital staff if wonderful. The short term care is another story. Bed alarms going off all night. My father got up with the bed alarm going off and broke his hip. The nurses aid station was next to his room. Nurses are on smoke breaks all the time. Do not spend more than one night at this hospital.

My husband and I have both been seen at Wahiawa General a few times. Our care was prompt with little to no waiting and the Doctors there are very nice. My only complaint is the girls at the front desk who check you in are SO RUDE. I mean. they are straight nasty and not at all accommodating. They make you feel like you’re a complainer who is wasting their precious time. Seems to me like they get paid to do a whole lot of nothing. Wahiawa General is not the cleanest place in the world either; everything is very old and seriously needs to be updated. Other than that, it’s not a bad place to get care and it’s close to where we live as well.

Located in Wahiawa on Lehua St is Wahiawa General Hospital. Pretty much this is the only hospital located in Central Oahu… and with HMC West now closed, a lot of the overflow from people on the West side end up coming here (or to Pali Momi).
The facility itself is practically begging and screaming for a renovation. It is OLD. Plain and simple and straight to the point. It’s OLD. It’s run down. It needs a make over like 10 years ago. There is parking surrounding the hospital (kind of in a circle) but during the day, all the lots are usually full. Your best bet is to find street parking if you don’t want to waste time (and gas) driving in circles hoping you’ll get lucky.
I’ve visited this hospital emergency room and to drop off/​pick up my [perhaps] future father in law for a routine colonoscopy. ALL STAFF that I’ve encountered (on multiple visits — mind you) have been exceptionally welcoming, friendly, efficient, and compassionate.
I think Wahiawa gets a «bad rep» due to the location and the appearance of the hospital. Remember, don’t judge a book by its cover. My experiences have been great and I honestly can say that I have no complains (thus far). I’ve had to bring my BF to the ER. I’ve had to bring my [perhaps] future father in law to the ER (on more than one occasion). I’ve had to bring my Grandma to the ER. (well, I had to PICK HER UP from the ER, story for another day…) and each and everytime I’ve come across friendly, accommodating, efficient, and compassionate staff; from medical assistants, CNA’s, LPN’s, RN’s, and MD’s. (those in the ER and those in the GI area where my [perhaps] future father in law had his colonoscopy). Thoroughly impressed!
If you can put preconceived notions aside… and you’re in need of medical care, I would highly recommend Wahiawa General Hospital. Don’t knock it until you try it!

What do you expect from Wahiawa?
The hospital is run down… that’s for sure.
It’s very dark at night
And some might mistake it for «haunted.»
At least that’s the feeling I had my first visit when I was 17, in high school.
But the truth is that my experience was great. The people were nice and I was taken care of much faster than at Queens or Pali Momi. They really tended to me and I believe Wahiawa is much cheaper as well.
Got what I needed to get done and I’m alive today. Thanks ER =)

Emergency and CCU care are excellently staffed. As for the regular ward — they have a different staffing issue — which means «DONT STAY LONGER THEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY» Head Nurse MOLLY was very rude when I asked for help with my fathers medication that he needed last night that I did not notice was totally out of. She told me in a stern voice QUOTE «HE IS DISCHARGED FROM WAHIAWA HOSPITAL, HE HAS A PRESCRIPTION, HE CAN PICK IT UP TOMORROW MORNING» I explained to her that he cannot go through the night without it, she replied — QUOTE «GO PERAL CITY LONGS AND PICK UP — THEY ARE 24 HOURS» I just hung up. totally fail on the head nurse Molly. I would write more but you get the picture. So the one star is in relation to the care given to my dad on the regular floor of the hospital.
I did drive to Pearl city longs from Wahiawa and back @ 10;00 p.m. in the rain. when I got there the health care provider was off line so I had to front the $ 278.00 to get my fathers medicine. Not happy about any of this which could have been avoided with a little more care on the hospitals part.
In addition — Dr. Huffman was supposed call us with the progress /​update on my father condition — All I got was a missed call — when I called back the nurse ade told me to pick up my father now — there was no health care plan or courtesy call to me in regards to me fathers condition (which previously he could not even walk off of his bed to use the bathroom)…blah blah blah…

DO NOT EVER GO TO THIS HOSPITAL — ESPECIALLY FOR ANY KIND OF EMERGENCY…
this is one of those hospitals that — if you were perfectly healthy, a visit here would make you deathly ill, injured, or worse.
my father had an emergency, to which an ambulance came. being that my parents live in the Mililani area, protocol is to take the patient to the nearest hospital… which would be Wahiawa General. my mother requested that he be taken to Straub in town, but they told her no.
he gets in the emergency room, it was very late, and dark outside — i know this b/​c their parking lot does not have any damn lights, so you can’t see sh*t when you’re there.
as i attempt to navigate my way through the parking lot and into the building, i almost eat it on an UNPAINTED speed bump. WTF.
i get in there, and an ARROGANT intern doc basically tells me that my father is going to die. — before you get excited, he did not, he is alive and well right now. THIS DOCTOR WAS AN IDIOT. not only did he scare the sh*t out of my mother, but his simple presence, and ATTITUDE made me want to punch him in the face.
then, later, when they were transporting my father to Straub (finally after HOURS of waiting), i was walking my mother to her car and she TRIPPED AND FELL over the UNPAINTED SPEED BUMP that i had mentioned earlier. she did not see it b/​c #1 — it was friggin unpainted, and #2 — like i said, there were NO LIGHTS IN THE PARKING LOT.
we went back in so that they could bandage her hands b/​c they got all scraped up from falling on the asphalt — and the nurse in there did not apologize, and had the nerve to tell us «oh yeah, that happens all the time»… WHAT-THE-F*CK?!?

I SHOULD HAVE SUED THOSE BASTARDS — i could own Wahiawa General right now — but who would want to own that piece of crap poor excuse for a hospital???

Everytime I have come in to the emergency room I have received good service from the doctors and nurses. I had to have my mouth stitched from a pick-​up football game and it was quick and pain free. Very little scarring. Parking is plentiful and you don’t wait as long as you would at Queens or Pali Momi. I highly recommend Wahiawa General.
