Several years ago, while preparing for a backpacking trip to Europe, I found myself in The Reading Room. They seemed to have just what I needed and I selected several great books including a few travel guides and pocket maps for different cities I planned on visiting. While checking out I struck up a conversation with the proprietor, a jovial older gentleman who very much fit the description of used bookstore owner. After we’d conspired about my upcoming trip, he gave me some chilling advice that’s still fresh in my mind after all these years: «Go now, while you still can. You never know what traps might be lying ahead.»

This is a vast and unpretentious place where you can bring in your books in decent condition and get credit towards your current or future purchases. They have almost every book you need and Diane will order anything they don’t have. I mean, piles and piles and piles and stacks and stacks. If you love books, you’ll never want to leave. If you want to shop local or have some time to kill on your lunch hour, this is a cool place to go.

Reading Room is an absolute gem for a place like Wabash. Any time I need something to read while in town, I head here for the best selection, best deals, and most fun experience. I don’t mean to wax too nostalgic, but seeing the rows upon rows of musty bookshelves really awakens the inner child. It’s a great place to explore, especially if you find yourself in a literary rut. Most books are really inexpensive here, and the selection surprises me every time I visit. Come with an open mind, leave with arms full of books.
