Description

Specialties

Café Ono is a vibrant, ecologically sound lovely dining experience set in an old Hawaiian Garden Estate. Our goal was to create a menu of offerings from the freshest, locally grown organic ingredients possible. To meet that goal, Café Ono works closely with local farmers, producers, and distributors who are also concerned about environmental harmony and optimal flavor. We feature specialty soups, fresh salads, hearty home style entrees, delicious desserts, gourmet coffee and Big Island teas. Guests are invited to dine in the lovely space overlooking our gardens or to enjoy outdoor seating and picnicking. Call ahead for takeout, picnic lunches and catering!

History

Established in 2005.

Café Ono is on the grounds of Volcano Garden Arts. Volcano Garden Arts, a World Heritage site a mile from Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, was once a part of the 1908 Hopper Estate. The farmhouse-turned-gallery is California redwood originally brought to Volcano by ship, rail and horse-drawn wagon. Our selection ranges from fresh, fun collectables to works of significant impact, from pocket-size to larger than life.

Enjoy the lovely cultivated gardens and greenhouses, plus access to nature trails into the surrounding upland forest.

Meet the Business Owner

Ira O.

Business Owner

Ira Ono is a multi-faceted visual and performing artist who is well known in Hawaii for fresh and innovative work. Ira is an artist who engages the viewer with a wide range of media and subject matter. His work is said to have an «altar-like» quality. At first look, a piece may appear quite bejeweled, but closer inspection reveals items from the everyday world transformed by the respectful content of Ira’s creativity and vision. His current work includes Japanese paste-paper paintings, mixed media collages, and ceramic masks. Ira’s masks reveal an elegant restraint and his unique style is clearly derived from a rich mythical past. Much of Ira’s inspiration comes from living in a rain forest. Ira Ono is also a gifted teacher/juror who conducts his «Art of Trash» workshops and teaches Japanese paste-paper making throughout Hawaii and the mainland. His work can be found in many private collections in this country as well as in Europe and Asia.
