Tidewater Community College

I enjoyed my time at Tidewater. I received a 2yr degree in under a year by taking extra classes & working through the summer. Rate my professor really helped me be able to pick my classes well. The finical aid department is however a nightmare. Every teacher I encounter were always very willing to help as long as you were a hard worker.

POORLY RUN. Outdated campus with parking miles from your class. No security that we saw in the 4 trips back and forth to the inconvenient no appointments taken admission staff. This college, true to many reviews does NOT want to help you with financial aid. They think everyone has unlimited money & unlimited time to spend at their campus, in person (run extremely old fashioned.) You can expect to spend an ENTIRE day waiting to speak with the financial aid department and still get nowhere. Other colleges and trade schools, career centers etc are so much better run. Yes they’re a TAD bit more but atleast those places wanted to help me RECEIVE financial aid and the proper loans and grants.

I’ve graduated from here in 13′. Ive recently went there goes a meeting and Alot had changed, more buildings were added, and it doesn’t even look like a community college any more, it looks like a university campus. Thumbs up on their unique design for the floating building in the middle of the lake. It’s called the student center, where they have a cafeteria, study area, gymnasium, work out area with fully equipped weights, treadmills, etc, a billiard room, a gaming room with ps3, ps4, wii, etc consoles, and another game room filled with air hockey, table tennis, and Foosball tables, and they also have a movie/​tv room with confortable seating. There décor on their hallways are unique, especially their huge clock. Great environment for students, with a great concept. I wouldn’t mind going back to that college.

TCC has stepped up their game in the past years. I’ve been going to this school since fall ’11. Depending on what classes you have, you may either be going to a new building or old. TCC has been around for a long time in the 757, it’s changed a lot since then.
I never had a problem with this school, this is honestly one of the best community colleges to attend in VA. Teachers here for the most part know what they’re doing, most of them just want you to get in and get out no strings attached. Just attend class and do your work. It does help if you’re computer and phone savvy since professors like to communicate through email/​blackboard.
TCC holds job and college fairs, for those who are seeking part time work or looking into attending a university. Workshops and clubs are offered here as well. They always have events where they give out free food, can’t say no to that.
The only thing that sucks here is parking. You’re gonna have to walk a lot, but that’s college, a little exercise never hurt. Traffic can be a butt too, so make sure you leave home/​work at least 15 minutes earlier in order to make it in time for class.
Take advantage of FAFSA, if you’re eligible you can receive up $ 5000 in Pell Grant and that can pay up to 15 – 18 credits plus books. They also provide great benefits for those in the military if you’re eligible.
They also just opened a student center directly in the middle of campus. It has a basic Starbucks and cafeteria (reasonable prices) and plenty of tables and chairs to sit. The second half of the facility holds game rooms equipped with the new xbox, ps3, wii (you can bring your own games or check out the ones they have) pool tables, movie room, gym with a big basketball court, outside patio, and lounge area. You must be a TCC student in order to get into the student center, they have security at the front to check and scan your ID.
They opened their Joint Library (open to public) in fall ’13. It’s a wonderful center, very big and spacious. Safe, organized, clean, great for kids, even has a basic Starbucks. There’s no worrying about getting a spot to study in peace, there’s 2 floors worth computers and tables. Study rooms if you need the extra privacy.
Affordable and flexible schedules. Offers online, dynamic, hybrid, and summer school classes. Several campus locations. Get your foot in the door here!

Beautiful campus. Everything you need is right on campus. Good building and equipment. Most of the teachers are top-​notch and caring. Great support system.
I went here and got my Associates Degree which allowed me to get a transfer scholarship when I transferred to Virginia Wesleyan. Great plan and execution. TCC made it easy to do, yet I learned a lot. Some of the toughest classes I took were here.

If you attend the Summer session and then proceed to regular semesters you know exactly what I’m about to say… TRAFFIC!
This is one of the major problems here at TCC VA Beach campus. We have too many cars and not enough parking spots. Traffic starts about 1 or 2 lights before you even come to proximity of the campus and is pretty much slow all the way in, until you finally find a spot… most likely in the very back. If you’re one of those persons that likes to leave the house at the exact time it takes you to get to school, think again and plan to leave earlier. Parking lot will always be a pain, but be patient and don’t get frustrated when somebody steals your spot after you’ve been waiting for it for a good 15 minutes.
Professors, it’s a a hit or miss but that’s the case for every college in America. Research them on rate my professor before so you know well in advance what to expect from them. Community college teachers tend to care more about their students and how much they are learning, of course this is a broad generalization. Enjoy college, and pursue your degree at full speed. Time wasted and classes failed is money out of your pocket.
