Once Upon A Child

I will not be bringing my business to this location no longer… The girl that helped me had a attitude and then preceded to not accept a baby item that was literally used only a few times because of a small black spot the size of a head on a needle… I had to literally get less than a inch from it to see it… Needless to say I will not be returning to that location… Good luck to anyone wanting to turn in baby items… It was at her discretion to decide that the item would not sell due to that one spot… Clearly this could have been there when the item was purchased from the manufactures… I found that was ridiculous…

Okay, so these places are always hit or mess. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone say they were thrilled with their experience at any of these consignment type places. With that being said…
I’ve sold things here twice and both times got more than I expected. I figured I’d bring a 30 gallon tote in with stuff and be offered $ 15. Not so. I wasn’t making a car payment outta the deal, but received a fair enough amount back for my sells. I’ve heard nightmare stories from others, so I am not sure what the problem is. If you’re like me who has a mother constantly buying fancy, expensive Nordstrom type clothes that never get worn, maybe that’s why my pay outs have been solid since they are still NWT.
Shopping there is kinda hit or miss. The good thing, I never leave feeling anywhere near broke. I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than $ 20…and gotten a lot for it. A lot of things are well worn and faded. Some brands are ones I’m not interested in. We’ve gotten a couple of super cute pieces there that I love for my daughter to wear. If I was looking for a specific outfit for a special occasion, I wouldn’t probably advise going here for something that important.
Now, for the bad part. This last time I went to bring stuff to sell, I came in shortly after the store opened. I signed in and was told it would be 30 minutes. Perfect. Enough time for me to peruse the store a bit. An hour later, I’m annoyed but don’t want to be dramatic, so I go stand by the checkout area just twiddling my fingers. Girl doing my stuff is a lead or something and keeps stopping to help this person with that and receive someone else who wants to sell and then another couple who come in with a toddler bed they decide they can’t take. Then back to my stuff. AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER… I get my offer and my cash and run.
I was LIVID. I really didn’t want to make a scene and get nasty with a young girl who probably really doesn’t care anyway, but it was hard not to. I understand wages are probably low, the job is annoying, people are annoying, etc., but you can still work retail and be a nice, happy personable individual.
So, for that last experience, I won’t sell here again. From now on, all my stuff will go to donation and someone will be very lucky to get our duds.

Waste of time to even try selling items. They are too picky and enjoy insulting people with their items. Yet many times I myself have bought things that weren’t in prefect brand new conditions. Yet I’m fully aware of the fact that the items are used and aren’t brand new. The people working in this store need to keep in mind that they are also selling used things and their customers are aware as well. If customers didn’t like the things they won’t buy them. Not to mention they pay you $ 1 for something to turn around and sell it for $ 30 pshhh please! Anyway think from now on I will be taking my business to other similar shops.

Just walked out the door. Came in to trade in our baby swing and pack n play and stood behind two people being helped in front of us. One of them who walked in right before us. It was 3:15 when we walked in. After watching no less than three employees standing around doing nothing and one of them even looming at me and doing nothing, I was told by tue employee who helped the woman in front of me (that walked in seconds before me) that they would t take any of my items because they stop taking items after 3. Standing there with a swing and two toddlers and my husband goes to get the other item out of the car– can’t be bothered to tell me that when I had the extra hands to leave? And what about the two women you were helping in front of me? One of them got a thank you with money in hand, and the other I overheard the daughter talking about what they do and do not take or pay for. Tue employee then LIED to me and told me that woman was just picking up stuff when I saw the transaction being made in front of my eyes.
This is terrible business– lazy employees and obviously preferential treatment. Enough to cause me to never return. I’ll sell my stuff in CL and on Facebook. Screw this place.

The absolute worst experience ever. After 4 trips to drop off two large totes full of clothes and shoes, I am essentially insulted and yet again told they don’t even want to look at what I have. Seriously? Rude the first time, insulting the second time, dismissed the third time, and this last time the lady was as sweet as could be as she told me the clothes reek, after just being laundered. CHKD it is. Sure it would be nice to sell some of it, but with the insults, hassle, and overall experience, I’ll pass from now on.

They are incredibly picky about what they accept on consignment; however, finding damaged items on the racks is far from uncommon. Be sure to inspect whatever you want to buy VERY CAREFULLY, because more than once I have purchased something, brought it home, and found a tiny hole, or missing decoration that I didn’t see in the store. The selection is OK-​if you are looking for upscale merchandise, you may want to check somewhere else-​the top brands they seem to accept here are Laura Ashley, Hanna Andersson, and brands of that ilk. (I have attempted to consign high end European designer clothing before, and had it rejected in favor of some mass-​produced piece from Gap-​very curious.) I usually tend to buy school clothes and items that my child can play hard in from this store-​I haven’t had a lot of luck finding anything for special or dressy occasions. Prices are reasonable, but bear in mind that you can find a lot of these brands at the Goodwill or Salvation Army for even less. Overall, it’s OK, but just OK.

We deposited the items the night before: toys, brand new clothes with the tags still on and gently used clothes. The next day, the store called us to make a fair offer…

Went here to sell my baby gear and like previous reviews say they are VERY picky, one lady you was attending me was really nice but the other one not so much seemed miserable, didn’t get nothing for my gear because miserable lady found a tiny bit of dust and wanted me to go back and wash it, which already was done before I brought it in, they are way way to picky

I love this store. The quality is typically excellent. The store is always clean and well organized. It’s sad to see so many poor reviews. They are picky when accepting items, but, in my opinion, that makes it a great shop. There are several other shops in town that are less picky and cheaper and the quality obviously suffers…

I went into the store to sell some of my sons preemie pjs that were worn at most twice and are Carter’s brand. I waited for my clothes to get appraised, walked around the store in search of pants for my infant newborn son, soon to discover they wanted $ 8.50 for a pair of pants, which are gently used. Before, I could look anymore she called me to come hear what I was going to get in cash…$ 6.00 which was $ 1.20 a piece for 5 items. I was appalled especially when the owner told me they try to fair in their prices. My reaction was not when they charge $ 8.50 for gently used. Is once upon a child great if you need cash, probably but I walked out and I would give my business to another consignment shop, which I did and got way more than $ 1.20 a piece. I would never shop there again, didn’t like the Chesapeake location and definitely do not like the Virginia Beach location either.

I didn’t buy anything from here I just sold baby gear here and wow they are picky. The excersaucer I brought in looks brand new. There was one spot on the fabric seat like a water/​juice stain. And they told me wash the seat and if it comes out bring it back. Really the excersaucers that they had looked more worn then mine so I found that a bit odd. Also if you come for a quote mid-​day be prepared for them to tell you it’ll be two hours before they can give you quote. So come when first open or right before they close. Because they will not hold on to your quote for the next day.

I have a love hate with this store. Some items are far more used than I would expect given how picky they are when your trying to sell. You do have to look through the racks to find the good stuff for a good deal. Some of their items are over priced. You can find brand new items at name brand stores at the end of the season when everything is on clearance for lower priced. Overall worth going to for a browse every once in a while.

I’ve only been here two times, once to buy and once to sell. I was genuinely impressed by how organized the store was! That made shopping a breeze! There were some really good deals and some not so good deals. I mean, you can find some of the things brand new for maybe a dollar or two more at some places. They are extremely selective which is beneficial for buyers but can be a pain for sellers. I brought in A LOT of stuff to sell and they did take most of it, but the main reason I went here was because they give you cash on the spot. They obviously inspect the things you bring in VERY closely. Had anyone else been interested in buying the swing I brought in, they’d be grateful for the deal they were getting on it. Instead, Once Upon a Child turned it away because of the tiniest spot! They did however tell me to just spray some stain remover on it, wash it (again) and if the spot comes out, they’ll take it. I plan on doing this because I have no need for these baby items now. All in all, I’d say this is a nice store. I read some comments about poor customer service but I haven’t experienced that. Both times I was in there, the workers were polite and attentive.

I have shopped here various times and experience inconsistencies in customer service. If the owner is absent the customer service is poor. When I am supporting your establishment its in your best interest to be respectful. I shouldn’t have to wait several minutes for you to finish what you are doing on the weekend conversation for you to ring up my items or answer my question. This is not my first time witnessing this.
* However, if the owner is there customer service is prompt and friendly. It is enjoyable shopping experience.*
The store has a great selection of everything you could possibly need for a child. I appreciate managements high standards of consigned items. Kuddos to the staff for their efforts in maintaining clean store with great merchandise. One of the reasons why I shop here is because they are so careful what they accept. No concern that a toy my child picked out won’t work. Almost everything we have purchased looks brand new.

The store itself is nice and they have tons of items to choose from, but selling to them is a huge pain and not worth my time or the change they give me for it. I bought a baby monitor from them and it looked decent but after I got it home it was one of the worst monitors I’ve ever owned. So the next day I took the monitor and some other items up there to sell. I paid 17.50 for the monitor, I sold back the monitor, a playmat, some books and a few other random items and they offered me 12.00 for everything.
They are overpriced on some things while others are priced unbelievably low.
They are super picky about clothes and half the time they are overstocked and
will not buy them anyway. I was shopping there for my daughters clothes and some
of the clothes I found actually had stains on them. I found outfits that were priced lower than a shirt sold by itself. Which made absolutely no sense…
I will continue to shop here when I need something used and if they have it at a good price (mostly because its right by my work). I don’t think I will plan
On selling to them again I find Craigslist a whole lot better!

I can’t really comment on much more than the baby boy clothes. I think they are incredibly overpriced for used stuff! I saw many things from carters and children’s place that you can get brand new for just several dollars more. Save your hard earned money and take it to Carters or children’s place gives you 20% off coupons + sales ALL the time. Also, you’re even better off buying from church consignment sales or craigslist if you want used.

The store itself isn’t bad. The people that work there are nice, and helpful. The fact that they advertise buying used baby clothes is a joke. When they are over stocked in a size, they’ll only buy new outfits w/​tags. You can have the nicest clothes but they won’t take much, just enough for you to come back and buy some/​sell some. The on going practice of wasting time. It would be better if you go to a consignment shop and drop it all off and pick up your $ once its sold, less wasting time, gas, and space. However if you plan on shopping there a lot… well then this might be the store/​process for you.

After I spent hours cleaning, inspecting, and sanitizing 4 bins of clothes and a exersaucer, swing, and 2 baby gyms, they would only take a handful of items and none of the large items. What a waste of time and gas going all the way out there. I understand them being picky but these items were used by children. They had all their parts and were super clean but if it doesn’t look new out of the box they aren’t going to take it. Sell it on Craigslist instead!

In general not too bad.
They are very picky about which clothes they take– good for buying, not for selling. They had a huge variety but unfortunately when I was there I didn’t find much I for my newborn boy (nicer clothes or beach type). They have a great girls section with bows & tutus. Customer service was pretty nice considering how busy they were.

Well, color me a dumbass because up until today, I thought Once Upon a Child was a daycare facility…
I was driving around VB, aimlessly, in search of a specific something for my son and after trolling through all the other baby stores I could find, I stumbled upon this place on my way home. Let me just say, I stand corrected, because, it is the furthest thing from daycare. Its a consignment store, filled with everything from strollers to boppys to rollerskates to toys to hair ribbon to aisles and aisles of gently used clothing, all ranging from size NB to kids. It was like walking into discount heaven for my child, I was very impressed! In fact, I asked one of the employees if they carried what I was looking for and she was more than willing to start digging. Right on! BEST OF ALL, They had it. For TWO DOLLARS, which would normally be around $ 30, so naturally I jumped and squealed! I love a good bargain! After I found what I was looking for I browsed the rest of the shop just out of curiosity. The employees there were all working diligently to hang and arrange all the new items that were recently brought in, the store was clean and all of the items there, looked good as new. They pay cash for anything they deem good enough to put on the shelves, so I will certainly be bringing things here that are no longer being used.
So happy I came across Once Upon a Child. They have great prices and who doesn’t love a good deal?
