Great sushi at average prices. The only downside is I always leave stuffed to the point I feel comatose the rest of the day. My favorites are the Twin Volcano Roll and the Green Mussel Roll. My wives favorites are the Matsu Roll and the Dancing Eel. Pictures provided

We came here on Saturday night for dinner and it was excellent. The atmosphere is very intimate, its not a large place and it really has that homey feel i like. Service is always top notch. Friendly and attentive and not overpowering, Just the way it should be. The menu changed a lot since we’ve been there last so it took some time to look through and figure out what we wanted. We both got the sashimi appetizer which was fresh and light and perfect. $ 10 each for 7 pieces of fish. For rolls i got the Ever green roll: it had spicy tuna and salmon cubes under seaweed salad on top of a roll of more spicey tuna and avocado and i think eel. It was SOOOO good! A lot of goodness for $ 13.50, We also got the mammoth and the name certainly is correct. this thing was huge and it had a lot of cooked fish on top as well at $ 13.50. And the boyfriend got the superman roll which he said was good but had a hard time eating it since there was so much on top which made it messy again the price was $ 13.50. Anyone seeing a trend? The rolls used to be about $ 10 or $ 11 for the specialty rolls and now they are a little more which adds up quickly. Our bill was about $ 100 for 2 sashimis, salad, soup, 3 rolls, 1 sake, and 2 plum wines. All of it was great and yummy but a little heavy on my wallet.

Not too shabby. Stopped in for lunch the other day and was pleasantly surprised. Tucked in this shopping center, it’s next to a Tropical Smoothie and a barber shop. Pretty standard décor and lots of seating available either at a table or at the sushi bar. Service was friendly and prompt, but not to the point where they’re staring you down for the whole meal(there was only one other table besides us). I took advantage of the lunch special and got two rolls, the salmon roll and the spicy yellowtail. Yellowtail was meh, but the salmon had a large cut of fish and it tasted pretty good. It also came with a salad and miso soup. For $ 8.50, I’d say it was worth it. Other options for lunch include cooked entrees from the kitchen(chicken, beef, salmon teriyaki, etc), sashimi, and even some Korean dishes as well which I will probably try on my next visit. Overall, I’d come back again. It helps that I work pretty close by, so the nice people at Matsu will be seeing me again =

BESTSERVICEINVIRGINIABEACH! All caps because this is a big deal for this area. It seems that a lot of restaurants do not take the time to train their wait staff on quality customer service. The service was hospitality at its finest! Welcoming, friendly, informed, accommodating, just overall awesome. Our server anticipated our ever need and want and did not hover over our table or neglect us, it was like she was reading our minds! We came for the Korean food and it was sooooo good! My friend and I both had Bi Bim Bap which was served in the hot stone bowl. It was such a big portion that I had enough for lunch the next day. All the flavors and textures, oh man. It was so fresh. I also ordered the Alaska roll, it was salmon, crab, cucumber and avacado for $ 4.25! The roll was huge! The fish was nice and fresh and the filling to rice ratio was balanced. I will definitely come back!

I almost want to keep this one to myself and y’all can go somewhere else. But since returning to this little gem after a few years, we were pleasantly surprised by the great changes that we saw. The service and the sushi was exceptional. Yes, it does take time to make good sushi. Don’t believe me? Go home and try to make some California rolls. Then throw your hands up in the air and take yourself to this place. Seriously. Good. Sushi. Can’t wait to go back.

I can always count on Matsu to deliver a great Spicy Tuna Cocktail! The price is a little high, but the food is wonderful!

Great place to eat and it’s a great place to enjoy Japanese sushi, Korean food and so much more! People that work here are lovely and the environment is amazing. Most importantly, the food quality is the best overall. You will never regret coming here!

Great sushi, nice atmosphere, polite staff, beautiful presentation. The reason it gets a 4 star instead of a 5 is because it takes a loooong time to get the sushi, it’s only one sushi chef and he puts a lot of pride in presentation, so come with patience.

First time here. The sushi was delicious and quality was outstanding. I am particular when it comes good quality sushi. Good clean atmosphere and staff was friendly. The portion size of sashimi was big and filling. I had the lunch special which included miso soup and salad which was some of the best I’ve had. Would definitely recommend matsu to anyone who enjoys delicious sushi!

Came here in search of my sushi sensei badge, with a hunger rating of 6. Nice little shop, but was pretty pricey. Came here for lunch break and didn’t mind it too much, there wasn’t many people in the place, and really had a nice Japanese small mom and pop feel. Sat at the bar, which was nice to see sushi being made right in front of you. Slices of fish were cut well, almost had that melt in your mouth feeling, which I look for in sushi. The rice is what made the rolls good, almost perfect. I gave this place 3 stars because it was rather pricey for the quality of the rolls. Overall quality is good, but at the price, I could find better I’m sure.

Husband and I have been coming here for years for Master Choo and it was amazing. Ownership has changed and so has the atmosphere. The chef does not engage you the way Master Choo did. The sushi roll prices have gone up but it’s still better flavor then other places nearby.

This is a relaxed sushi spot in a strip mall. This is not a high end sushi bar. However, the service is great and the sushi is good. I typically go here for lunch. The spicy shrimp roll is the best in hr.

I have been going to Matsu for 10yrs. They are my adopted family now! The Master Choo and the staff will definitely take good care of you. From time to time, Master Choo will spoil us with one of his new inventions. He never disappoints! When I first moved to the area I spent months finding a good sushi bar. Once I found Matsu, I won’t go anywhere else. This is hands down the best suhi in the area!

Expensive, out dated, there’s way better around the area where you can get a better bang for your buck!

I was hesitant to try this place because it doesn’t seem very popular and there are dozens of other places to choose from. I’m glad I went in because it’s one of those smaller, family run businesses. We sat at the sushi bar and watched them slice, roll, and drizzle the sushi with lovely toppings. It was fun to watch. Our server was very polite and on top of his game. He quickly refilled drinks and took away dirty plates. The atmosphere is just ok, there is no background music and it is small so you can overhear conversations from any table but we didn’t mind. The menu had many rolls to choose from but it was just different combinations of many of the same items. I would have like to see a little more option but I was very satisfied because I don’t need anything too fancy and they have all the staples for making excellent sushi.

My husband and I visited Matsu Sushi around 6pm on a Wednesday(yesterday) and we were more than pleased. The only reason we even tried this place was due to a deal we purchased online. We ordered about 7 different simple sushi roles, received green tea(real green tea — lol — that looked green and had green tea sediment at the bottom of the cup), great Miso soup and their shrimp fried rice. While I felt it was pricey(though that is a relative statement) it was fresh, well prepared, pretty and tasted great. We splurged a bit, but if you are looking for maybe a simple role or two with miso soup and some green tea, it shouldn’t be too bad price wise(again, though, that’s relative). Since my family is on a budget, we can probably only dine here every so often and with another deal, but it will definitely be worth it. I felt happy, full, and healthy by the time we left!

What can I say, my expectations were exceeded. Really good specials. I got the volcano rolls and steamed dumplings. Very good flavor!

Matsu feels like traditional and authentic Japanese restaurant(well, I guess not since there are tables and chairs…). It’s a tiny sushi restaurant, with a small staff of older Japanese sushi chefs and a courteous waitress. If you love going to ethnic food restaurants and impressing the staff with your foreign language skills(like me), then brush up on your Japanese for this place. Best of all, it’s an actual sushi bar – you can sit at a bar and watch your sushi being made and order more delicious sushi as you are licking your plate. The atmosphere lacks your traditional Japanese feel, it looks more like a cozy mom and pop restaurant(minus the sushi bar), but it’s still a nice small and relaxing place to quickly be seated and get your meal without much of a wait. Of course, the sushi here is great. And it should be because it is much pricier than many of the other sushi restaurants in the area(Fire Ninja, Fusha, etc). Four pieces of shrimp tempura ran me almost nine dollars. It was good, but I don’t think I could tell the difference from the other sushi bars offering their tempura for two or three dollars less.
