Manager

Ms. Sellers comes to The Esthetic Institute as a licensed Esthetician from Columbus, Ohio where she graduated, with honors, from the Aveda Institute. She currently holds an active license in the field of Esthetics as well as a Managing Manicurist license. Katie is originally from Vienna, Virginia and has lived in Nashville, Tennessee and Columbus, Ohio prior to returning to Northern Virginia in late 2010. After struggling as a young woman with many common skin concerns, Katie’s passion for skin care, make-​up, massage therapy, and other esthetic applications was born. Having experienced many treatments and modalities that heightened her awareness of how and why proper esthetics and effective treatments are a vital part of skin care and overall health, Katie knew what she wanted to do with her future. Katie’s love of teaching and sharing, combined with her knowledge of esthetics, brought her to The Esthetic Institute as an instructor. Ms. Sellers is also a CIDESCO International Diplomat.

I have a been a student here for three different courses to include: basic esthetic, laser class, and master esthetic class. I had enjoyed my time while being a student since I learned a great deal of skincare knowledge. One of the great benefit of the school is you get to practice on each other. My skin has never felt or looked so amazing.
We have a chance to work in the student clinic towards the later half of the problem. I would recommend anyone coming to the clinic as a paying customer to keep a few things in mind. It is a training environment. You may have to share a room with another customer (there is privacy with curtains). A student is there to learn and feedback is encouraged. Also be on time and or call if you need to cancel or reschedule.

I have been to student clinics across the country, this was by far the worst. Horrible, worst facial I have ever had. So bad I’m not even willing to give it another chance. It was supposed to be an hour and was only 40 min, there were several steps missing. I don’t recommend it.

I’ve been coming here for about 2 years now. This is a great place to treat yourself without spending a lot of money. They offer waxing, facials, but what I love them for is eyebrow tinting! For whatever reason, I’ve had trouble finding places that offer that service. And here it’s only $ 10! You can’t beat it. They do lash tinting too, which is great especially if you are going to the beach or something and would prefer to avoid that runny raccoon look
I went there yesterday and saw Paula, and I must say she does an amazing job! She told me she’s a perfectionist and I was like, ok! I want perfect eyebrows!
The only reason I hesitate to give 5 stars is that because it is a student clinic, the service you get can be variable. For me it has usually been pretty good and whenever they mess something up you get it for free: D

I’m happy with the facials that I’ve been getting here for years. They are just a bit unorganized, can never find my file. The only huge disappointment was the permanent makeup on my brows. I would never let them near me with a needle again! 5 years ago it was already a disaster and so was the touch-​up just recently. Back then I had to have it corrected by a professional, paid 800 $ for both the brows and the eyeliner. Now I thought it is time for a touch up because the brows started to fade. So I gave them another chance. Instead of just doing a touch up they changed the shape entirely and made them way too dark. The Persian drama really looks hideous! This all happened with the «Master» right there overseeing it. I wonder how she got her degree! Now I am going through laser removal and in a few months eventually will be able to get new brows from a «real» professional permanent makeup artist.

Great instructors! I completed the basic and masters program here. They completely prepare you for your state boards to ensure you pass with flying colors. The class schedules are convenient for those who work full time.
I researched 3 other school before deciding to sign up, and I’m so glad I did. The Esthetic Institute exceeded my expectations for education and I have been successfully employed since graduation!

This school has an excellent above standard program for the students to learn and thrive. When I decided to do my licensing I researched several institutes and once I went in for the interview, I was immediately impressed. The school is very nice and well supplied with the latest and best machines, resources and products for the students to learn. The instructors here are not only knowledgable and professional, they are also very hands on and very much engaged with you and seeing you meet your academic goals. I was so impressed that after finishing my Basic program that I was excited to sign up and complete their Masters Program as well. I also made some fantastic client based relationships. The instructors at Esthetic Institute will be there to help you obtain your career goals even after you have finished your academic. I’m extremely impressed with this Institute and am happy I made the choice to attend.

Yes the deal’s are fabulous. However, be prepared for very inconsistent experiences because they are students in training. The products have a smelly odor and the room and blankets are filthy. I had one student apolgize, and share that she brings her clean stuff from home to ease the situation. I would rather pay more somewhere else.

I fell asleep (in a good way) during my facial with Candice.
I actually ran into Candice recently and recognized her as someone who did my facial at Aveda a while back. She has a great attitude and really loves what she does and mentioned that she now works at the Esthetic Institute. I booked a chem peel and microdermabrasion with her given my great experience with her.
Except for not being able to find the place for a ludicrously long time (THANKS Google Maps), my experience was perfect. Even though I was crazy late, they were incredibly accommodating and kind. No frills, sure enough. But I don’t care about frills, I just want great, effective service.
I got an enzymatic peel that definitely felt like it was working, but with no pain or discomfort. Same with the microdermabrasion (which is when I fell asleep!). Despite my being totally relaxed, I woke up and my skin did look glowy, smooth, and fresh – it just happened that I got those effects without having my skin scoured and scraped. :)
I think if you manage your expectations and balance it against what you’re getting (no frills, but very good, very effective discounted facial services) this place is great. I’m already looking forward to going back in a few weeks.

My friend and I go to the Esthetic Institute’s Student Clinic once in a while to pamper ourselves with a facial. It’s a training facility, so it allows the students in training the opportunity to practice in a salon environment; since they are students working on you, all the services are closely monitored and supervised by the institute’s instructors. They offer services such as deep pore facials with paraffin, acne facials, AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) facials, multivitamin facials, back facials, facials for men, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, hand treatments, wax services, lash perming/​tinting, and nail services. Since this is a student clinic, the prices are very competitive and budget-​friendly! They are opened Monday-​Thursday, from 10:30 — 7:30PM, and Sundays from 10−3PM, all requiring appointments. If you sign up for their email list, you get great coupons, such as ‘buy one, get one free,’ ‘free facials,’ or a combination of deals.

It’s the end of a horribly long cold winter and my face has definitely taken it on the chin. My skin was dry and the pores were clogged from trying to find something to put on it to keep it from chapping. I was looking for something «immediate» and saw that the Esthetic Institute was running a special on Amazon local. I called them up and was able to get their last «same day» appointment. I had the signature facial peel and I am very happy with the results. I have very sensitive skin and other than a little burning sensation I was fine. No redness. Just very clean skin that feels as smooth as can be. The facility is clean, bright and the people are very friendly. The esthetician was very knowledgeable and professional. (I paid the full price of $ 30.00 and I am planning to become a regular monthly customer.) The Institute is in an office building and depending on the time of day you might have to ring the buzzer to be let in. The waiting area is a little cramped, I guess because of the Amazon promotion, and, the ladies room serviced by the building management out in the elevator lobby was out of toilet paper, but other than those two things I have no complaints and so I am giving them «5 Stars».

First of all, they neglected to give me full information on total costs and results, such as how lip tattoo will take up to 5 – 6 sessions to see noticeable results and you have to pay the listed price for each session, so the listed price of $ 50 dollars over 6 sessions is $ 300. Then, even if makeup is done correctly by a professional on the eyebrows you will need a second session for perfect results, which is usually complementary in most places, but not this school, you will be charge for touch up again.
Now about my experience:
I had been given an eyebrow tattoo by a student with poor anesthetics (the teacher said in the real world you wait 20 minutes for Anesthetics to start working, but we «don’t have time for that», needless to say it was painful experience) with a faulty tattoo «gun», that leaked and squirted ink all over my face and clothes, which aggravated my sensitive skin tremendously. I wish there was more close supervision because after almost 4 painful hours I ended up with two differently shaped and shaded black and grey eyebrows. Since I have very light bleached blond hair and specifically requested a light blond color for my eyebrows, I now look like a cartoon character with mis-​colored dark eyebrows. They canceled my second appointment without calling me.
The teacher told me that I should not have expected correct color mixing by students (why didn’t she correct them on the spot?) and she can correct it for me for the full price that she charges, $ 350, or I can go see somebody else if I don’t have confidence in their school and she «understands»! That offer makes me wonder if this «school» is just a way to get new clients for the full price.
Also I had my lips done at the same time as my eyebrows and I have no retaining color: waist of money.
I will now have to go through very costly and risky procedures of tattoo removal on my eyebrows, that can leave me with scars and no hair on my eyebrows.

It’s true that a student is going to be servicing you, but in my experience, it’s not too worrisome, because there’s a teacher and other students in the room. Also, you can say which services you want, so you can start out with something harmless, and work your way up as the student demonstrates himself capable. So yes, maybe my student did forget how many times to run the microdermabrasion on my back, but all he had to do was turn to the person on his right and ask.
The services are quite plentiful too — in one evening, I got a vitamin C peel on my face, fluid releasing facial massage, and microdermabrasion on my back. All free, while the graduates across the hallway are charging about $ 50 for each of these services.
Logistically, if you come in the evening, you should drive around to the back of the building and press the «Esthetic Institute» button to get in.

I am aware this is a teaching spa/​school, and allowed for such when appraising my experience. I was fortunate to have a student who will be a great Master Esthetician one day.
A lactic acid peel was my treatment, by a Master’s student on Tuesday March 18, 2013. My Esthetician was wonderful. This was her second or third peel, and she only needed to check her notes once! She was knowledgeable about the process and products being used. Always attentive to my comfort level and queried me often to confirm my level of «activity». We discussed aftercare and what to expect. So far so good, I’ve noticed that my hyperpigmentation on neck has reduced a shade! Look forward to more.

One of my clients is taking classes there. She invited me to come in and she would wax anything I needed. I figured she need practice so I went in plus we have a blast together. She did a GREAT job. She waxed my under arms, eyebrows and legs. She is done with her waxing class now. She has invited me to come back so she can do a facial for me. I can tell she is one of their more competent students so I will go back and enjoy. Since she is a student there they allow her 3 «friends» on a list so I get it all FREE however I tip her very well for her time, attention to detail and supplies. I know when she graduates from there she will be one of their best students they ever turned out.

I went here for a facial. I know it is a school and my esthetician would be a student so I was not expecting the best facial of my life or anything. The check-​in area was very nice, must nicer than I expected… just like a real spa. I wish I could remember the name of the young lady who did my facial but I can’t. She was very sweet but smelled like smoke. She did a good job, cleansed my skin, explained everything she was doing.
The teacher came in a few times and was very rude to the student in the way she spoke to her. In my opinion, the girl was doing a good job and trying her best and the teacher shouldn’t have berated her like that in front of a client.
My skin felt very smooth and clean when we were finished. The cost was $ 30 — can’t beat it. I will definitely come back.

I purchased a Groupon for the signature facial. PROS: My esthetician Ashley had a gentle, relaxing touch. She’s quiet which I preferred since I’ve had experiences where the esthetician talks throughout the entire procedure. CONS: My facial was about 45 minutes, 15 minutes shorter than I thought it would be. Although I arrived on time, it took a few minutes for the esthetician to take me back to the room. During my facial, she had to step out of the room — I think because she forgot something but she didn’t say anything.
All in all, it was a good facial. I probably wouldn’t have tried this place if it weren’t for the Groupon.

If I could give zero stars, I would.
To start, I gave this place a fair chance. I had an awful experience the first time I went but hoped that it wasn’t actually a reflection of the place as a whole. Turns out, the place is just awful.
Let me preface. I understand that this is a school and was not expecting something similar to a Four Seasons spa experience, but I was excited to find a school where you could get discounted services. The price was right and I believed that the services would be good based on the students’ passion and desire to learn and grow. I was wrong.
My first experience: a friend and I each booked a microderm facial. The technician that my friend had did not know how to do the microderm at all, therefore, my technician had to help her (several times, which interrupted my facial). Also, the technician that was doing my friend’s facial «forgot» to actually include the facial part of the facial with the microderm treatment. Therefore, my friend’s facial was much, much shorter than mine and we couldn’t figure out why until we went to pay. My friend had to argue with the owner for awhile to not have to pay full price. She was then given a rather pathetic discount. Meanwhile, my lady seemed to know what she was doing, however, her hands reeked of cigarettes. It was nasty! I felt like she was rubbing nicotine all over my face. Not to mention the fact that she had to help her classmates along during the facials, so I was left alone on several different occasions and she was so «busy» and «confused» that she actually put the chemical peel on my face twice! Ouch! Horrible!
My second experience: I made an appointment for a facial. I sat in the waiting area for over an hour because they had «double-​booked» but would not admit to the double booking. The owner walked by me several times with no apology and without offering me any water or, well anything actually. I got fed up and ended up walking out.
The place is poorly run and the students are not qualified at all.
NO discount is worth such a crappy experience. Lesson learned (twice).

I went here today for my first facial. It was a really good price only $ 30 for an hour deep pore facial. All the work here is done by students, and my lady was very knowledgeable and friendly. I’m not sure if I would go here for services like waxing, but I would definitely recommend for facials and massages.
