History

Established in 1980.

The Garden Barn began as a road side stand. Our thirteen acre facility includes a state of the art half acre greenhouse and garden center stocked full with everything you need to have a successful planting season!

In 2003 Dennis and Kathy built the store and greenhouse that customers enjoy today. The 13,000 square foot greenhouse was renovated in 2011 thanks to the brutal winter of 2010 and a 15,000 square foot pavilion was also added.

2011 also saw the construction of a 15,000 square foot production greenhouse that produces many of our plants.

There’s plenty to see and do when you visit. For example, you can take a calming stroll around our pond, or bring the kids and help them catch pollywogs. Be on the lookout — you never know when the Blue Heron is coming for a visit, or, even better, a Bald Eagle! Come check us out!

Make no mistake, after over 30 years in the business, we know plants! We are always willing to answer questions or offer some gardening tips and advice.

A mass majority of the annuals and perennials that Garden Barn carries is grown on site. With 13 acres, a large greenhouse and garden center, finding quality locally-​sourced plants is a breeze.
I have many ants and uncles that are passionate horticulturists. When I need something custom-​made for them or during the holidays, Garden Barn has been a great supplier of custom creations. Planters, hanging baskets, window boxes, hard-​to-​find herbs and vegetables — you name it, Garden Barn has it. They also have and can source both common and unusual plant material. Just last year I helped my family purchase a variety of fruit trees from Garden Barn. Not only did they have quality inventory, but they were even cheaper than other online options.
Year round, Garden Barns offers a large selection of practically everything. Various houseplants to add a breath of fresh air, poinsettias and Christmas cactus during the holidays, and the never-​ending array of annuals and mums are readily available. Planting and plotting materials, home décor, fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, potting mix — they got you covered!

If you have an issue don’t go to the cashier with her agricultural degree. Ask to see a manager! She dismisses you and surely doesn’t value the customer who keeps her employed. Once we talked to a manager we were somewhat pleased.

I love this place. I started getting into gardening in the last 10 years. I mostly get my stuff from Home Depot, the Hartford Farmer’s market or sometimes at
. The Garden Barn has it all. It’s large and their selection of everything is great. They have tons of trees (like weeping cypress, which you’ll never see at Home Depot) and different perennials. The prices aren’t going to be Home Depot prices but you can’t compare the two. You’re paying for quality and service at the Garden Barn and it’s worth it.
I particularly like their décor. I’ve bought a 7 foot metal leaf (that you stake into the ground) as well as a large (maybe 4 feet) stone pagoda. I’m always on the lookout for some cool décor for my yard (which I call the Zen Den) and other places, both boxy and ma and pop stores pretty much have the same stuff (i.e. gazing balls and other items that just aren’t for me or my yard).
Lastly, the service at the Garden Barn is really, really excellent. The staff is always wandering around trying to help people. They all seem to be wired on walkie talkies because when you ask someone a question, if they don’t know the answer they’ll get it for you in seconds by hitting the walkie and asking the group. Not only did they help me with a price on an item but you could hear them answering all sorts of questions with speed and accuracy. One final note, they asked if we needed help with our pagoda (and yes we sure did… that thing was heavy!).

Stumbled on this business when we were looking for a specific tree (Heritage Birch!!). The place is well-​staffed with people who — if they don’t know the answer– actually find a person that does. Beautiful well organized product. Large but accessible. I was actually surprised that for a nursery of this caliber the prices were comparable to most other local places. If it’s Home Depot prices you’re looking for then you will be disappointed… but if you are hoping to find a place with beautiful flowers (etc.) for your garden– BINGO!

Great place, with a wide variety/​large selection of items for — you guessed it — your lawn and garden. I’m also down with helping out the mom and pop shops around here.
I decided to start a potted garden in the spring. They helped me to carefully select everything from the proper potting to the right soil. The place was busy, but I didn’t ever feel like that given their attention to detail.
Additionally, if you sign up for their mailing list, they always have tons of deals. And they don’t send you an annoying amount of swag.
This place rocks!
