A thirscan0019d generation company, Brummer’s Chocolates was established in 1904 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Moving to Vermilion, Ohio in 1990, Bob Brummer extended their business to the mid-​west while George Brummer continues to do business in New Jersey.

The candy and chocolates are made in the back of both brother’s stores using the same family recipes that were used over 100 years ago. Unlike large candy companies where everything is automated, the Brummer brothers make most everything by hand. DSC01600

I was a bit disappointed this time around. I ordered white chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine’s Day. The price wasn’t bad, 18.95 for a pound. Completely excited. Until I got them home. The end if most of the strawberries was nearly white. As a result, the flavor was weak, with them being unripe. I always had access to a local Shari’s Berries in CA. This is the first time purchasing back here in Ohio. I’ll keep looking. Maybe some place will make them right. With premium berries, rather than unripened midget berries.

We visit Vermilion every year and wouldn’t consider missing out on a trip to Brummers!

What is a stop in Vermilion without dropping by Brummer’s for a bag of chocolate! So many tasty homemade chocolate treats that it is sometimes difficult to choose. There is always a sizeable selection of holiday goodies. Also some cooking and serving utensils as well as cookbooks for sale. They also have a nice selection of sugar free chocolates.

If you think Malley’s is the best chocolate around, Brummer’s will blow your mind. They make most of their chocolates right in the store by hand. I highly recommend the caramels and the buttercrunch. They also have a large array of sugar free chocolate if that’s your thing. It’s worth the hike out there; park in the city lot behind the store and Brummer’s will give you a token so you don’t have to pay. Also if you like shopping at little boutiques, there’s a number of cute little shops on the surrounding streets to hit up.
