We are members of the Automatic Transmission Rebuilder Association (ATRA) and provide ATRA Nationwide Warranties. We perform complete rebuilding, external electrical and computer diagnostics and repairs. We work on all Domestic and Imports, as well as the classic cars from the good ol’ days. History

Established in 1980.

Since 1968, Dave Wilkes has worked in several positions, including brake and front-​end mechanic, R&R technician, rebuilder, shop foreman and shop manager. In 1993, he purchased his current Ventura transmission repair shop and changed the name to Dave Wilkes Transmissions. He has seen the transmission industry change significantly from all 3-​speed-​rear wheel drive transmissions to highly complex front wheel all-​computer-​controlled transmissions of today. However, one thing that remains constant is Dave’s dedication to providing you with the best transmission service in Ventura, CA.

Dave Wilkes grew up in Solvang and got his first job in the automotive industry in the 1968 when he was employed at a service station where he watched them work on vehicles. Do you remember what a service station is verses a gas station? A service station was where they actually looked under the hood of your car and inspected your engine oil level, checked your tire pressure and washed the windows. Following his service station position, Dave spent the next six years as a brake and front-​end mechanic and then three years in a general repair shop in Santa Barbara before he started as an R & R technician for Mike King at Trans-​King Transmissions in 1980. Because of his previous experience he moved quickly being a rebuider then was promoted to shop foreman and eventually shop manager. Dave ultimately purchased the Ventura Trans-​King shop and in 1993 he changed the name to Dave Wilkes Transmissions.

Dave and Dan were very clear and patient with attending to my needs, as a new customer. Both these gents took the time to explain the procedure on servicing my transmission. The shop is also ATRA certified, and in good standing with the BBB. I find Dave to be a very honest shop owner. From overhearing his conversation with another customer in his office, and with my own dealings I know that he will ensure all parties have clear expectations. His shop is clean and organized, and his technicians are experienced and efficient in their work. You can even watch them Service your vehicle from the waiting area.

Wilkes Transmiision was recommended to me by several people, I found them to be cold, and lack, of a better term passive aggressive. Once we decided to not have Wilkes fix our car we were given the cold shoulder. , Our estimate was very vague ($ 3000 – 4000) and couldn’t tell us exactly what was wrong and he charged us for a diagnosis service which was $ 87.50 and he couldn’t tell us what was wrong with the transmission. Once we told them we were taking our car somewhere else, We were told «Good luck with that». We were then told your car is over there you can go get it, but in reality our car was being blocked by another car. An employee moved the blocking car, then came to us and said your battery is dead. This is a fairly new battery less than a year and come to find out the headlights were left on. Great now we have a broken transmission and a dead battery, way to go Wilkes Transmission.

Took my truck in for a transmission check. The mechanic figured out the problem rather quickly. The staff was friendly, professional and courteous. I did think their prices were a little steep, but I am a believer that you get what you pay for.

I went here for transmission fluid change service. They are really nice, did a good job, and explained everything very well. Found them through AAA reference and I can see why they have a good reputation. This place has the feel and service of a local owned, well run business. I would go back.

My car broke down near Dave’s shop and I had it towed there. Being from out of state I did not know the area and I decided to take a chance. He took my car in and did a diagnosis on it. He gave me great advice and many options on what to do with my vehicle. I was however unable to move forward due to financial problems. He not only advised me on how to sell my car locally but also made me an offer. He was professional throughout the whole ordeal not to mention being a nice man. I just wish I could have done business with him. Thanks again

I am really impressed with the level of care and service Dave Wilkes provided.
A few years ago I needed to have my transmission rebuilt. I opted to get the premium version of a rebuild so that it would last extra long.
Turns out something went wrong with one of bearings and the repair was covered under warranty. Dave fixed it at no charge. This is a shop that really stands behind their work. I am so glad I took it back to the same shop. I will definitely always recommend Dave Wilkes Transmissions to anyone who needs their transmission serviced.
