This is the annual Venice Art Walk which is different than the monthly Venice Art Crawl. The Art Walk is the bigger(and more expensive) event of the two. I didn’t take any of the $ 125 architecture tours, but the $ 50 artist’s studio tour which covered about 20 sites. This is not like most art walks where it’s mad roaming for art galleries in the dark with very little direction and no centralized event space. The mad roaming is replaced with a map with well-marked entrances. Some art was displayed in gallery settings, but some also allowed viewing of the artist workspaces. All sites were easily within walking distance of each other even though there were shuttle buses. The event is during the day which avoids the normal loud annoying drunk types who are more interested in being seen than seeing art. The Google offices provided plenty of space for the silent auction inside the building along with music and food trucks outside(and first aid stations).

This was my second year and it’s still really cool. You get to peak into how artist work and set up their studios’. Allot of human contact and walking. It’s so Venice!

This past weekend, the art walk in Venice for the free clinic was really great. We got the $ 50 tickets, and it was not overly crowded at all like I was worried about. The weather was nice and mild, perfect for walking around the neighborhood. Everyone was really nice, the art was pretty good — much better than the Downtown Brewery Art Walk which I also attended about a month ago. It was so interesting to see the artist living spaces, and work studios along with their unique perspective. There was a fashion photographer who worked a lot in Italy that did some really great photos of body ornaments on nudes that were not a touch risqué, I was very impressed with his aesthetic sensibilities. There was also some other renown photographers with published coffee table books of underwater sea life, and the turbulent 60’s photos. Also sculptors, painters, mixed media, etc — the artists were in attendance and they were pleased to talk with visitors, and explain their methodologies. Recommended highly see the neighborhood, experience the art, people, and a wonderful way to spend a weekend day. There are buses which take people a quick distance into the areas for viewing the art. Bright fuchsia signs were posted to indicated the number of the studio, which corresponds to the map. We also got complimentary reusable brown bags from Bloomingdales.

I went for the first time this year and I LOVED it! I actually kinda get chills thinking about it. Having the opportunity to go into the artists studios/houses was amazing! I also loved the cute little food-faire they had set up. I bought the t-shirt(which was designed by one of the artists) It was a simple donut but I’ve gotten so many compliments on it. Oh, Kristin Klostermans collection was the best! [imo] && I loved her house. The«Eclectic Collector» that everyone said I had to see… uhh… well it’s a once in a lifetime thing. I’m glad I saw it but I’ll never go again. Other than that, the Venice Art walk is the best! && the money goes to a clinic for families who can’t afford health care. You should go!

Remember that if you find the shuttle buses to be full, the studios are pretty close to each other. Close enough that you can actually walk between them. A map will be included in the brochure given to you. Also don’t forget to purchase the Art Walk t-shirt designed by local artist.

The 2008 Venice Art Walk & Auctions is on May 17&18 — all the event info is here: . This is one of the great art AND community events in Los Angeles. Not a high ticket price to see renowned Venice artists in their working studios, plus the chance to buy their art alongside emerging SoCal artists. The first day consists of architectural home tours and the preview of the 400-piece art auction. The 2nd day is the studio tours, food faire, entertainment, etc. There’s also a kick-off party on May 8th — the ‘Art Happening’ which is a fun night of art, food & drinks. I should mention that I am a volunteer and LOVE this event — don’t miss it!
