History

Established in 1983.

The love child of a composer & radio head, Sleeper was raised by instruments & gypsies. One of the top 8 DJs on the planet in the 2006 World Series Turntable Championship, his music has been featured on ESPN, MTV, TED & URB Magazine.

He does an array of events from F1 racing to VJ showcases for Apple. Sleeper’s YouTube channel has over two million views.

Sleeper’s Michael Jackson remix stayed #1 for a month on Hype Machine & made it to Zeitgest’s Best Songs of 2009. Stretching across genres, generations & styles, his ability to remix live while incorporating turntablism into his blends creates a sound that is distinctly his own.

His music has brought him all over North America, South America, Asia, Europe & Jamaica. DJ performances include artists/​clients such as Ludacris, Common, Mix Master Mike, Wyclef Jean, BT, David Beckham, Ryan Sheckler, Travis Pastrana, etc.

He has produced work for Adidas, Red Bull, Live Nation and Spitkicker.

Born & raised in Maryland, Ken’s dad is a composer, & his mom is a radio broadcaster. He grew up listening to his mother on the radio by day & fell asleep to father’s vio­lin lessons by night. From the womb & all through his teens, piano, guitar, violin lessons were all around. In college he fell in love with turntables.

He imme­di­ately dived into radio & the DJ bat­tle cir­cuit. Ken started two shows on local & col­lege air­waves then bat­tled his way up to one of the Top 8 DJs on the planet in the 2006 World Series Turntable Championship.

Jesus, prayer, guitars, tennis, soup, nuts, bananas, jeff buckley & rodrigo y gabriela are some of Ken’s greatest loves.

Sleeper is my go-​to DJ for all my events at Red Bull! I just tell him the theme for the event and he goes with it and always delivers. His improvisational skills are amazing — when something happens, he responds with music or sounds. He gets everyone dancing, knows the trends and customizes based on the audience’s response.

This guy is amazing. I have done a number of events with Ken. Besides being a humble, friendly, positive guy, he is a PHENOMENAL DJ. Ken can handle any crowd and any event. He has an incredibly diverse knowledge of music and that comes through in a big way. The guy makes every event he spins at better. I’ve had the pleasure of working with DJ Sleeper for several years as a dj manager, and he is by far one of the most talented, easy-​going, accommodating, and outgoing djs I’ve worked with. He puts in the effort to understand the event, the audience, and the venues where he performs. For club events, he balances requests from the audience and directives from promoters to deliver the best dj set possible. For corporate events, he curates music that not only sounds great to the attendees, but compliments the brand’s sonic identity in a way that leaves a positive lasting impression for event attendees.

I contacted DJ Sleeper to work a party I threw for some of students I work with in a transition program for adults with special needs. He was AH-​MAZING!!! He went with the music the crowd wanted, brought crazy-​awesome energy and even put on a video mix at one point. He has this amazing ability to connect with the audience and it is no underestimation to say that he is what made my party a success!
Towards the end of the party, he even let some of my special needs students «scratch» the vinyl, making them feel like they were all DJs and at the same time showing that DJ Sleeper’s got real heart!

Dj Sleeper and I collaborated on multiple events, in addition he has converted me into a major fan that attend a lot of his events.
Dj Sleeper is a Musical Savant, and that would still be an understatement. DJ Sleeper musical knowledge is hard to beat. His ability to cross-​mix multiple genres is out of this world. His creativity with his craft is inspiring, and his technical knowledge of music and dj-​ing is astonishing.
What he brings to the table is more than just music. His work sets up the whole environment, and can bring a stuffy dark room to life. His energy, passion, and enthusiasm for his work is electric. He is able to connect with everything from niche crowds to the most diverse hard to please crowds.
Despite being highly talented and a sought after Dj, DJ Sleeper remains humble, professional, and highly accommodating to both clients and his audiences.

DJ Sleeper is one of our resident DJs at the club I work at on Sunset Blvd. He’s amazing! One of the best things about him after working with him for years is that he NEVER uses a playlist — he always keeps you guessing on what he’s going to play next. What can I say about DJ Sleeper? It was love at first sound.
Our first engagements were through Red Bull, where the energy was kept high and sustained with the clever beats of a mix master. On one specific event, New Year No Limits, DJ Sleeper stimulated our guests with the perfect blend of legendary tunes and off-​the-​wall surprises. This where was I first became aware of the power of the DJ Sleeper tongue flash — a move that revealed to me the passion of the man behind the music.
From there it was over, from Sound Cloud (SLEEPER) to private parties to clubs around LA, I have been a true fan and follower and will remain so until my legs fall off (which I don’t expect to happen… ever!)

I stumbled on Sleeper in Santa Monica and chatted him up — liked what he was playin’ and just generally liked him too. Ended up flying him to Chicago and San Fran to play at Steelcase showroom parties, and then of course the Los Angeles showroom. We even had a live camera feed at one of the parties and he totally went with it and worked it!
Ken gets the crowd, is super flexible, loads of fun, easy to work with, and professional. DJ Sleeper really made the events more memorable and special.
He’s fantastic.

Watching Sleeper spin is as close as you can get to observing pure joy in action.
I’ve hired him a few times to play at events of varying sizes form 100 people to several thousand. He’s a real crowd pleaser. He’s actually played at my events events targeted at kids and those for adults and he’s been excellent in working both crowds.
I’ve had him spin for an evening events in clubs, and had many of my guests ask me for an intro, with an interest to hire him.
For the kids event, he even spontaneously invited them on to the stage and taught them a little about spinning. They loved him for it. He was patient and completely happy to see them engaged in learning.

I produce events for a living and one thing I’ve found is you are only as good as your team. When trying to create a mood every element is important but it’s usually the music that makes or breaks the party.
DJ Sleeper makes the magic…
His ability to understand and deliver on a concept is very unusual in this business. He brings his own unique style but never at a cost to the over all theme of the event, in other words he knows how to be DJ Sleeper — Team Member.
I keep a list of DJ’s I’ve hired with notes on their styles, abilities and knowledge of music genres. DJ Sleeper has the most notes, stars and underscores on that list. In fact I’ve re-​written the list and put him at the top.
Recently we brought in Ken (the name on his driver’s license) to spin for the launch of the Audi A3 sport sedan. An hour in, the party really began heating up when the DWP cut a power line knocking out electricity to several city blocks. Thankfully the LED mood lights were battery powered and the kitchen was on a generator but the MUSIC! What to do about the music? DJ Sleeper thankfully had some awesome playlists on his phone that we synced via Bluetooth to the car in the middle of the showroom. In less than five minutes the party was back on track. The PR people said that Audi saved the party but we all know it was DJ Sleeper.
Last Thursday I enlisted the one two punch of team Kay12 and DJ Sleeper to launch the all new Porsche Macan SUV for Beverly Hills Porsche. So far the feedback is showing this might be the best launch event we’ve ever pulled off.
I’ll give Ken the highest recommendation with one condition, DO NOT try to hire him on a night I need his services.

I brought SLEEPER on board for a Sprint retail event and he rocked the house! Not only is he so easy (and pleasant!) to work with, he went above and beyond what we asked. From a corporate perspective, I appreciate that made suggestions based on our needs and goals for the event. He is very versatile, understands the business and most of all, he brings incredibly awesome energy.
At our event, some customers were curious (and impressed) with what he was doing and rather than being standoffish, SLEEPER would take the time to talk to his new «fans» and show them what he was doing — I don’t think that’s typical in this industry!

I could write a whole story about how much I love DJ Sleeper. As everyone has mentioned on here, he is definitely one of the most versatile and talented DJ’s out here in LA. He is a genius how he blends different genres of music. Take a look at his video mix «Counting Cavemen» on youtube and you will see exactly what I am talking about.
I had a monthly party in Santa Monica where he was the resident DJ and I must say that he created so much buzz with everyone. All of my friends would keep asking who he was and that he was incredible. It even led him to being booked for a huge annual hip hop dance festival in Seattle.
I am big fan of his and happy to call him a friend. He is very approachable, geuine, and has an infectious energy around him that always brings up others! His good ear for music allows him to rock a big nightclubs, intimate lounges, corporate events, and in store demos (he performs at the apple store on 3rd street promendate).

I work in a local event catering team called Kay12 and we have probably hired over 100 different DJs since I started with them about 5 years ago. After stumbling upon Sleeper as a referral from a good friend, we’ve put him at the top of our referral list for DJs/​Entertainment. His rock star appearance shows that he could undoubtedly light a fire under any party, but it was a pleasant surprise to see how versatile his arsenal actually is. We had him perform at a Porsche Event we did in Beverly Hills that was 70s Rock and Roll themed and he did equally well as he did at a prior Wedding reception and just as good as he did at a prior high energy dance event we put together in downtown. He’s also a class act, always smiling, very professional and very eager to work around your budget.
I vouche for Ken Chen (aka Sleeper) all the way. As a matter of fact, he’ll be spinning at an upcoming event of ours this month.
