Manny’s Texas Weiner

Great staff and great food. The waitresses are always a pleasure to deal with, you don’t have to ask for extra napkins and they are always so sweet. The food is usually great, I had one run in with under cooked chicken but they promptly recooked the sandwich and apologized. I reccomend the chicken club or cheeseburger club.

I’ve been attending Seton Hall University for three years, and have driven by this establishment every trip. I’ve always wanted to give it a try, so I finally did. This place is essentially a diner with their feature item, the Texas Weiner, being the namesake.
The menu had everything you’d expect from a diner. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The service was okay. Nothing spectacular, nothing atrocious. It had a decent atmosphere, again, nothing special.
I ordered one Texas Weiner and one Texas chicken sandwich which was grilled chicken, bacon, bbq sauce, and cheddar.
This was a step below okay. The taste of the hot dog was a bit off. A little more bland than a ball park or any one you’d buy in the store. The chili was a really dark color and had a funky smell. It ruined the whole dining experience. The grilled chicken sandwich was also very bland. Bbq sauce was a unusual purple tint and did not compliment the sandwich.
My friend ordered a buffalo chicken wrap and the cheese inside was not melted. Instead they were literal blocks of cheese and came with a packet of Kraft ranch dressing.
There was one bright spot. It was the hot sauce. Really good.

After following Facebook’s Hot Dog Nation page for a few years and being taunted by the the people posting pictures of the great hot dogs from places like Manny’s, Rutt’s Hut, Hot Grill, Galloping Hill Inn and the NJ invented Itallian hot dogs from Dickie Dee’s, Jimmy Buffs and Charlies of Kennilworth. I decided to get into the car and leave the Brooklyn’s Kimche, Aole Foo Foo dog meca behind and head back to my home state for some good old hot dog goodness. My first stop was Manny’s, a family type restaurant in my old home town of Vauxhall/​Union, NJ. They have a little bit of everything from salads, steaks and chops to burgers and their famous Texas Weiners. I got two all the way, mustard, chili (a milder version of the stuff first created in Paterson NJ in the early 1900’s). They were so good that I ended up ordering a total of 5, 3 of which I packed into my hot pack for the trip back to Brooklyn. This is what hot dogs are about, not some faux gourmet meal that you have to fancy up so that you can pretend that your eating more than a hot dog.

I ordered the Open Faced Roast Beef with Mashed Potatoes and gravy. Outstanding! Generous portions, friendly staff, decent prices. I was surprised that they also had a very lengthy and delicious looking breakfast menu. Can’t wait to try it!

Manny’s Texas Weiner, owned by John and Manny specializes in the classic Texas Hot Weiner-​styled dog — they use a natural casing beef/​prk Texan brand made by Grote & Weigel. The dog was crisp on the outside which lends us to believe that this dog was cooked on the griddle. The joint has tons of other food options as well, so it may be worth it to check this place out! RATING (S):… J. Diggity Dog: 8/​10, Dog Man Sac: 8.5÷10. J. Diggity said, «We had the Texas-​style, or Texas Weiner (what they call it). It is a Grote & Weigel, Texas-​style, from Connecticut, this is what I’m told. Made for New Jersey. Flat griddle. The chili was uhhh, it had that nutmeg in it. And it smelled really sweet and overpowering however, there was a burn to it and it was not overpowering. You could barely pick-​up (taste) that nutmeg and cinnamon. It just had a strong scent, which kind of through me off. But it was good! And I’m giving Manny’s…J. Diggity 8 for the slow burn, the dog was cooked alright, the bun was great and they have good milkshakes too by the way.» Dog Man said, «Manny’s (we don’t know where, NJ), 1979 it’s been here since. It is a Greek hot dog joint. They also do a lot of other items like delicious milk shakes. That being said, the hot dog: steamed bun, Grote & Weigel 60 percent pork, 40 percent beef, natural casing on the griddle. The chili, while I was a little nervous and apprehensive because of the nutmeg smell, equaled out with the spice that it had, which actually, was very, very good! Friendly family atmosphere. Waitress was pleasant. Nice home fare American cuisine. Food was delicious. The blueberry pancakes were bursting with flavor. Somewhat crowded but the service was fast. Overall it was a good dining experience.

The hot dogs are great! Just alone with nothing on them except for the spicy mustard. Great snap to them great flavor… one of the best hot dogs I’ve had.
Not a big fan of the chilli for the Texas weiner. It was very strong flavored… not sure if it had some sort of curry in it or something. I think with a better chilli the TX weiner would be unstoppable!!!

I always wanted to try this place since moving to the area and now it’s my new spot for hot dogs. I ordered 2 chili cheese dogs and a side of fries. Their hot dogs tasted sausage-​like — different than others I’ve tried. Also, It was was cooked very crisp — just how I like it. It was topped with a nice ladle of chili and cheese. Lastly, the lady behind the counter was very nice too. I will be returning for my hot dog fix.

Little disappointed with this place only because of it’s high reviews.
Service wise, it was great– our waitress checked up on us several times.
Food — Burger was just a frozen burger with chopped grilled onions on it. It was okay at best. My crispy chicken tender’s wrap was actually Yum, way better than the burger. Cole Slaw was terrible, Potato Salad was actually pretty good, but was on it’s way south if you know what I mean. Pepsi float was great, but only like ¾ of the cup. Disco Fries were lil soggy but ok.
So all in all, typical diner food. I guess better than average?
What I really wanted to try was the Hot Dog Special, but need to wait til this Baby’s out!

Don’t let the sign and outside appearance fool you, they are not a Weiner joint.
Surprisingly a nice, quaint Friendly restaurant. The menu consist of your typical American classics.

I went back and ordered food to go. Service was much, much better and very personal and friendly. Will be coming back.

Pretty good stop for a jerk above fast food. Priced right love the variety of the menu. I had the turkey Swiss bacon with slaw panni good portions you will leave satisfied service was quick your in and out and back to what you need todo. Good stop I go there when I’m in the area.

This place is a great greasy spoon– it’s simple, a great value, and good comfort food.
I almost always get the hot dog special, the texas chilli sauces is good, sharp, and just enough spice to get it going. Fries are normal frozen offerings, but they’ve always been served up still hot and the right amount of crispy.
The breakfast sandwiches are cheap and good as well.

This is a fast spot to get a quick bite. American Diner style food is whats on the menu. They cook tasty food here. I had a Chicken Fajita wrap with Coleslaw and I tore it apart! Very good flavors. Waitress was funny and sarcastic which I think is the style at this establishment. They have a sense a humor here. I can see myself eating here for lunch. Food is fast and good prices, so how can you complain.

I usually love their food. But on Tuesday i found hair on my food. They did remake the food. but still charge me the full price. no free drink no anything. Of coarse i was paranoid eating the 2^nd plate. i wasn’t pleased that day. I might have to go back to IHOP for breakfast.

I got off at around 7:30pm and wasn’t sure where to eat for dinner, so I went down Springfield and found this place open until 10pm. Since a number of places were getting ready to close for the day, I decided to check Manny’s out.
Fried Mushrooms ($ 3.60) (B): I was hoping that the fried mushrooms would be large and juicy, but instead, I received a handful of small battered mushroom halves and some sour cream on a leaf of lettuce. In addition, I wasn’t too fond of the mushrooms in general without the sour cream.
Disco Fries ($ 3.95) (B): The gravy was rich and not too salty, but the mozzarella wasn’t the best cheese to use in my opinion. I wasn’t expecting poutine, but maybe a handful of cheese curds or even plain cheddar would have been better with the crinkle fries.
Manny’s Texas Giant Deluxe Burger ($ 9.25) (A): Great burger. It’s basically two 6oz burger patties topped with crispy bacon, sauteed mushrooms, melted cheddar cheese, and the fixins between two toasted buns; it’s served with a side of fries, half of a dill pickle, and a small cup of coleslaw. There was no mistake in ordering this — it wasn’t «giant» but I certainly left full and happy.
Service (A+): The service was awesome. Aside from the mom, her two daughters are also working here; the one who ties here hair up was the only one I talked to and she was so fun to talk with. She was very friendly and checked up on my table numerous times. Her mom was really sweet too, from the time my table walked in to the time we paid and left.
At first, I was indecisive as to what I should order since the menu is enormous — everything from all-​day breakfast to weiners to burgers to paninis and more. Parking may be a bit tough if the place is busy, but inside, there should be plenty of seats.

Been here twice. Once for just the texas hot dog and once for dinner. The hot dog was ok but I didn’t like the chili that they put on top. It tasted like it had a lot of herbs in it that you don’t usually have in chili. And was a little mushy. Maybe that’s just what a texas weiner is supposed to taste like though…
For dinner I had a Greek wrap which was very good and huge! We also shared the jalapeño poppers which were delicious! We also ordered the texas chicken sandwich and that was just ok… Pretty plain and not anything great.
Do want to try breakfast here one day!

Been here a few times. It has been around FOREVER and having grown up in Maplewood, i remember seeing it as far back as I can remember. I am sure I went as a child, but honestly I can’t remember that. ha.
I went in this past week and had a seat at the counter. This place definitely fills up but I was able to grab a prime seat at the counter. The staff was on it, they are VERY fast and do have their work cut out for them but seem to handle the high volume and pressure quite good.
Very extensive menu. I saw some interesting things coming out of the kitchen for sure. i wanted lunch so grabbed the chicken sandwich. Chicken pieces were obviously prepared and spiced way before they were served and it was a solid and huge sandwich that I could not finish.
Friends been telling me that these guys have some of the best fries in town so I decided to get the disco fries. HOLY CHEESY GOODNESS. They are ridiculous. i must have gained a few pounds eating those. They use melted mozzarella cheese (and a lot of it) and the gravy was good. SO much cheese… I really need to stay away from this place. lol
Anyways the parking situation is pretty bad but it’s definite;y a solid lunch (and breakfast, the omelette’s looked good) and fast/​friendly service. Had a good experience here.

Texas Weiners, a regional hot dog variant that has nothing to do with Texas. It’s basically a chili dog with mustard and onions. It’s good, and if you come you should have the dogs. However, as far as regional hot dog variants, I’m not totally impressed.
Chicago Dogs? Love Chicago Dogs.
Italian Dogs? Love ‘em. I seriously think a North Jersey Italian Dog is the East Coast’s version of the San Francisco Burrito.
Texas Weiners? Not so much, it’s just a chili dog with extra stuff. But, it is good here.
They have a big menu, their burgers are OK, breakfasts are good for their price, about a buck or two less for an equivalent at a diner.
Not bad, just not something I’ll go out of the way for.

Being a Texan I had to stop in at Manny’s Texas Weiner because — well because Texas is not really the weiner capital that this name implies…
Four of us ate here 3 days in a row — parking is tough and the place is small as can be. In fact I think the menu is larger than the restaurant.
We had standard NJ diner type food — (none of it healthy). From Burgers, to Paninni (sp?) to Reuben. The food was solid but fries were a let down as it is frozen krinkle cut fries so I opted for the Onion Ring upgrade which was well worth it.
Would I go here again — yes if I am in the area. However I was really wanting one of the mile high pies that NJ Diners are famous for but alas they do not have them — which with the bad nutrition I enjoyed there… was probably a good thing.
