TLDNR: When break-ins happen, and all your stuff is taken, they don’t care. The detailed story: The staff was friendly when we signed up and moved in. After 2 months in a unit, one Monday morning we received a call telling us that we «need a new lock on the unit. It’s open.» Puzzled, I went to find out what that meant. What this actually meant: our unit had been broken into, everything of value was stolen(several thousand dollars of electronics that I use for work), the remainder of the items were ransacked, and someone had been LIVING in the unit. How do I know that someone was squatting? Bottles of urine, dirty panties left on the floor, a blanket that we hadn’t left there, empty cans, and, oddly, a glass shelf that wasn’t ours was in the space. Yes, I have pictures. The response we got: «We don’t know how that happened. We checked on Friday, and it was fine. But on Monday, it was open. This never happens.» Could we look at surveillance tapes to see what happened/possibly find the thief? No, we could not. Did they offer to assist us with a police report? Nope. Did they have insurance to cover break ins? No. «You store at your own risk.» Now look, I get that bad things happen. But we had a good lock on that unit, and if a place is supposedly under watch, how is it that someone managed to live in our unit? Additionally, how did this go on, even according to their admission, several days without someone on staff noticing? There are weekend hours, so this should have been caught sooner. Our unit was inside the building, supposedly only accessible to someone who goes through security and is on the list of approved tenants. So how did the thief get in? And why wouldn’t Oxnard Storage have protocols in place for assisting a tenant if there is a break in? The *minimum* I’d expect is the assistance to get to the bottom of the issue, not only to help us in getting the police involved, but also to protect their own business. I’d also expect more of an explanation, and maybe more than a voicemail saying we needed a new lock. Perhaps leading with, «We think all of your belongings are gone.» None of these things happened. You can draw your own conclusions about what that means. We have our own theories, but that’s not what matters. What matters is that we lost thousands of dollars in gear and they did nothing. Luckily, this stuff was for my work, and not personal. It’s a business expense, and not an emotional attachment. But I want to warn others for whom a loss like this would be more dear. Steer clear of this place. Yes Oxnard Storage is cheap, but you’ll have just as much protection for your belongings as buying one of those PODS storage boxes.
