Danmer Custom Shutters

This complaint is about the extraordinarily slow, unprofessional, and inefficient service my husband, Louis Feldman, and I received from Danmer Blinds in Sacramento, California.
On October 7, 2015, a sales rep from Danmer Blinds came to our home to speak with us about getting some window coverings for the sliding glass door in our family room. After spending approximately one hour with the sales rep, we decided to order custom vertical blinds from Danmer Blinds made by Hunter Douglas. We signed a contract that day, and had in writing an installation date of 11/​11/​2015. On that date, an installer came to our home and began the installation, putting up brackets over our sliding glass door, but he stopped when he discovered that the top rail was defective. A month passed, and we were called by Danmer Blinds and offered another installation date of Monday, December 14, which we gladly accepted. Then, on the morning of December 14, we received another call from Danmer Blinds, telling us that our appointment had to be cancelled because the slats needed for the installation were not available.
The second week of January we wrote a letter of complaint to the manager of Danmer Window Coverings in Van Nuys, California, because we still had no blinds on our sliding glass door, nor had we been given another installation date.
We were contacted by Danmer of Sacramento a week later with an installation date of January 29. When the workers arrived to do the installation (two hours early), they realized that they did not have the slats needed (again!). Next week Danmer rescheduled our installation for Feb. 9, and on that day the workers again arrived two hours early, and this time they completed the installation. THIS WAS FOUR MONTHS AFTER THE INITIAL VISIT BY DANMER OF SACRAMENTO AND TWO MONTHS AFTER OUR FIRST SCHEDULED INSTALLATION DATE.
We have never, ever had such poor customer service and feel that four months is an extraordinarily long time to have to wait for window coverings.
We have reported our complaint to Better Business Bureau.

All shutters are not created equal! For real reviews of this 40 year old, Made in USA, factory direct custom shutter company go to CustomerLobby and see what happy customers look like! These guys are great!

Avoid this company. Poor service, with a rep that was eventually let go from the company. Later the regional manager refused to honor the signed agreement presented by their former rep. I will be pursuing further action on this.

We have no issue with this shutter provider. 26 windows including 6 french doors and the price was right. All projected delivery and installation dates were met. Lynette our sales lady was on top of the entire project and Steve and his crew were professional in the installation process.
The product is truly custom and the quality is there.

I’m going to leave names out for my own reasons.
Pros:
1.The Shutters are custom made to fit your Windows.
2.Our Sales Rep was very helpful in helping us determine which style shutters.
3.The individual who installed our shutters was very good at what he does. He had also measured our windows for the custom shutters.
4. We have a lot of windows, and a sliding door. Plus, an entertainment nook that we wanted to be able to hide during the occasions where a larger group of people are over. Essentially, they custom built tall accordian style doors that match our window shutters and they fit in perfectly. When closed, the entertainment center looks like a closet area and the surrounding area looks clean and tidy.
5. Overall, we spent close to $ 20,000 total. We opted to do our upstairs first and paid Zero Percent Interest for 1 year. Once the Upstairs was paid off, we did the exact same for the Downstairs.
WARNING:
We found out the hard way. We have Milgard Windows and never thought about (Nor did the Sales guy or Installer) what we would have to do if the windows needed repaired. In order to remove the window that slides, the have to raise them then pop them out towards you. The problem is, if your Danmer Shutters moulding wraps around the edges of the window frames, you will have to have your whole shutter and frame removed before the windows can be repaired. So please take that into account should you choose to get custom shutters and this is why:
CON:
Danmer will charge you $ 75.00 for each visit (uninstall and reinstall) plus $ 8.00 per square foot.
We had 5 windows that needed repaired. Only 1 was a large window, the others were fairly small. What should have taken just a few minutes to pop the windows out and replace the rods on the sides of each window pop out turned into a financial nightmare.
The shutters and moulding had to be removed from the 5 windows before Milgard could fix them (Thank God the Windows were still in warranty).
Damner wanted to charge us $ 735.00 to take the shutters down and reinstall the very same shutters!!! We called our salesman and he worked the best he could with the Customer Service Manager since we had already spent a mint for the shutters. The Customer Service Rep dropped the price to $ 425.00 (I had already paid the $ 75.00 for the uninstall so it would have been $ 500.00).
Do we feel «Extorted» Yes we do and it’s a hard lesson learned.
I will also add the Customer Service SUCKS. I mean they called me and as I was trying to find out why so much etc, the girl kept putting me on hold to answer other calls. Really? You called me Danmer! The all I got was Hmmmm and Hawww and no definate real answer that could justify $ 735.00. Of course I’m talking to someone who’s probably making minimum wage and just might not even know how to spell «Shutter.»
We could have tried to get a handyman to reinstall the shutters, but if we did for those 5 windows, it would void our lifetime warranty on those shutters. So they have me by my balls and know it.
So before doing anything, make sure all access or repairs can be done to your windows without having to remove your shutters and moulding.
And yes, we are going to take the loss and pay the lower Extortion fee of $ 425.00 so we can maintain the warranty and also pray nothing goes wrong with any of our windows.

Danger Custom Shutters is an outstanding company. We called the Laguna Niguel, Ca office to inquire about shutters for our condo in Dana Point. An appointment was made for a sales person to give us an in home quote. Melissa, arrived on time and answered all of our questions and offered good advice. Within an hour we made a decision on shutter material, style, trim work and set an installation date. Melissa was professional and made the experience both educational and fun.
The following week, Chris the area manager arrived to measure our windows and doors. Again, another Danmer person arrived on time as scheduled. Chris measured four windows and two doors. The measurements were perfect and our shutters are perfect.
On installation day, Phil arrived on time as scheduled. Phil was very organized and efficient. As he brought new shutters into our home, he removed and disposed of the old window coverings. Within four and half hours Phil removed, disposed and installed new shutters. The installation was flawless. Before leaving, Phil offered us advice on cleaning, opening, maintaining our Danmer Shutters. He also repeated several times that our purchase was quaranteed. Phil was obviously proud of the shutters and told us he had worked for Danmer 28 years.
With the recent record breaking heat, our shutters are proving that the insulation improvement is very accurate. We are remaining comfortable indoors without the AC. Thank you Danmer!

I called last week and spoke with a girl named Nikki. She was horrible. She didnt answer any of my questions and she kept putting me on hold. I counted, our phone call was 7 minutes long and I was on hold for more than half of it! She put me on hold 4 times! All I wanted to know was what they charge per sqf and if they have slate grey top down shades. if it was that much trouble just asked questions I can’t imagine what it would be like buying from them. Im going to be sticking with my blinds until I can find a reputable company to work with.

Not sure what is going on here. I called for a quote and Mary came out. She was not the friendliest rep. I asked her to start measuring in the bedroom as my husband needed to get ready for work. She proceeded to measure the living room windows and when my husband interrupted her and said he needed her to measure the bedroom she had the audacity to tell me my husband was cranky.
She gave us a quote and marked down major discounts and gave us a final price of $ 5000 for our 5 windows, originally about $ 7000. I told her we had more people coming out to give us quotes and she badmouthed the other companies, completely unprofessional in my opinion.
About a week later she called and told my husband she could do the shutters for $ 4000 and he told her we were still waiting for more quotes. Today she called and I told her we decided to go with someone else and then she said they could do the shutters for $ 3000 and good luck with the other company.
How much mark up is there for these shutters that you claim to make yourselves in your own factory that you’re able to drop the price that significantly or you just butt rape people???
Needless to say if we were fond of Mary we’d probably change our minds and go with this company, but she was that bad!

We finally did all our windows, except the sliding glass door, and they did a great job.

I scheduled an appt. over 3 weeks ago. The day comes when someone is to come out and give me an estimate. Well half hour goes by and no one has arrived at my house. I called Danmer up and I get a poor excuse of «Oh the person who was to go out didn’t work today!» What happened to customer service. They were not going to call and reschedule my appt. I will be taking my business elsewhere!

Danmer was professional from the first contact, sales presentation, measuring, and installation for our Encino Pied-​à-​terre. They followed up with fabrication status by email during fabrication and called to confirm installation time a few days in advance. The installers were not only on time, but neat, courteous, and prepared to get started working immediately. Danny and his helper were clean, quick, and professional; cleaning up as they went, respective of the walls and flooring, and very professional. The shutters look great, they left touch-​up paint in case I need it in the future. I will definitely use them again if I move. We had fifteen (15) windows covered with 4″ shutters and three (3) were very tall and tapered… THEY LOOK AWESOME!!! Also appreciated the no-​pressure sales call we received, which I was not expecting after reading some of the other posts.

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE!!! They Lie, Never on Time and takes forever to receive your order, once you receive it it’s not what you ordered then they schedule to come back like 3 or 4 different times! So inconvenient for me when I’m busy working every time they schedule I have to take off work! and the installer Ruined my walls upon installation! They had to reschedule another appointment just to have a guy come fix that! After a week of installation the nails were Literally popping out of the hinges. the shutters were about to fall off you opened them and they had to reschedule another visit for that! this is all in the span of 4 months! I ordered these in September its now December. For how expensive these are we are EXTREMELY disappointed at the quality, AND the service. oh did I mention the Sales rep that originally took my order got fired because he was so neglectful of his clients. The Manager Chris took over and seemed to be very assuring over the phone. then never checked up on us to see how it got resolved! We’ve told them several times we are displeased with every single part of this process!!!

I went into their location two weeks ago for an estimate on some shutters. Very modern and nice facility. I spoke with Chris Murillo. He said he would get me a quote within 24 hours. IT’S BEEN TWO WEEKS. I’ve called and emailed, but have received no response. My order may have only come to $ 750, but is that too small a price for this giant of a company?
It’s not too late. I still would like the shutters or at least a quote. I would recant or revise this review if they made good on my potential business.
People at Danmer… not a good business model.

Shutters look fine, but the customer service is awful. Promises to call back for a technician never happened the first time, or the second time I called. I will not be purchasing my next shutters for my other home from this company.

I was amazed by the way this company stood by their product. The previous owner of my house purchased shutters from Danmer 15 years ago. The quality was excellent, and, remarkably, the shutters still look new. They are covered by a lifetime warranty which is transferable to subsequent owners.
In my opinion, most warranties and claims of durability and superior customer service are empty promises. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I contacted Danmer to arrange a repair for 4 slats in a shutter which had been accidentally damaged. Though damage of this nature is not covered under the warranty, for a nominal fee, Danmer replaced the whole panel with a brand-​new custom-​made shutter., The new shutter matched the old ones exactly in color and style, and looked perfect.
Danmer sent an installer to my house, picked up the damaged shutter, shipped it to their factory in LA, manufactured an entire new shutter (even though only a 4 slats were damaged), matched the color exactly, and then sent an installer to re-​install the replacement shutter. And for all this they only charged $ 209. I can’t imagine that it even covered their cost. A lot of companies would have charged a fortune because the shutters are a high-​end product, and people will pay whatever it takes for a quality repair.
Customer service was consistently friendly, well-​informed and responsive.
My experience was that this company goes above and beyond to stand by their product.

Do not tell me I did not warn you! Too expensive for the very low quality shutters you get, cheap staff.
When installed, look like some pieces of plastic glued together and installed upside down, not shut properly and customer service sucks!

To balance the bad reviews, here’s mine!
We had our shutters installed two days ago and I couldn’t be happier with the result. The overall experience was a positive one and the team I worked with was highly professional and resourceful. The initial meeting with Lesa, the designer, was really nice and she provided really good insights and recommendations for our windows based on the size and room needs — yes it took time but she took time to explain, not only measuring the windows. The price was also really comparable with other providers and their production time is quicker so it was a no brainer for me to sign the contract with them. I read the Unilocal reviews afterwards and got nervous so I told Lesa and she took it very seriously and reassured me about the company and the product. All the appointments were scheduled at once and I received a reminder one day before each visit (blueprints and installation). They were always on time, not pushy at all and delivered within 3 weeks as promised when I signed the contract.
The day of the installation they (two pros!) arrived ahead of time and explained everything to me. They worked all day in a very positive mood (I had both kids with me and it was sometimes hectic and noisy) and were very professionals and friendly. One window shutter wasn’t ok so they explained right away that it would be changed as soon as possible and booked the appointment with me. I had more than 15 window shutters to install (incl. french doors and sliders) and they took great care to ensure each would be installed perfectly — and they delivered beyond expectations!
The house looks great now and the result is fantastic — see the pictures for proof.

I didn’t order the shutters but the salesman was AWFUL! He was so rude. First of all he came to my house through the garage entry! HOW LAZY! He knocked on my interior garage door rather than coming to the front door of my house. Ummm, no. Then he did the whole, «this is the price I can give you only if you buy NOW!» I told him I needed to make a phone call and would get back to him tonight. He wanted to stand right there while I made a call, I promptly told him to get out of my house and through the FRONT door. YUCK!

Over the last couple of years, we purchased Danmer shutters and could not be more happy. We just added the last one to our home and it has made all the difference in the bedroom.
We bought the «energy efficient» shutters and they have made a huge different in the temperature of the condo. We have very high ceilings in the living room and our electric bill is high. The shutters trap all of the heat in the summer. Yes, they are expensive, but you get what you pay for. They look amazing. Check out my before and after pic.
I’m a bit stunned hearing they are owned by Macy’s. It would have been nice to know that up front, maybe I could have used my Macy’s charge and gotten rewards points.

I am giving this 5 stars because of Eric and Mike. The shutter that was put in my living room, was beautiful. But not for my living room. I have a Victorian theme and once up could see right away this was not the place for these shutters. Eric is the manager and he handled the whole situation with class and professionalism and was very understanding. He agreed with me that the shutters took away with from the Victorian décor I had in my living room. He had Mike contact me and they arranged for the shutters to come down the next day. This is why I am giving Danmer Custom shutters 5 stars. Thank you Eric and Mike, your kindness and understanding and quick response to my problem was well appreciated. Yes I would refer you to others. Just not to anyone who has a Victorian living room. :)
