Has been going down hill since stracks took over (from wiseway). They appear to have put no money in the store. Produce is not fresh, not enough check outs, human checkouts, and meat/​poultry area always seems low or full of last day sells. Not sure if same owner or manager as north side stracks but this one is terrible. Unless you need a quick item or ran out of something you are better off going a bit further north.

Meh. Martin’s is a better grocery store. People tell me that the other stack and van til in Valparaiso is better. A step up from going to the Walmart for groceries, but not a huge one.

Pros: Usually have fresh produce, but look at everything.
In the Calumet Store they have a nice salad bar
They also have a fresh sushi bar
Friendly employees who will help you out with your bags
Cons: Always, and I mean always — check your prices to make sure you are being charged the correct price. I have gone in and purchased 5 items and 4 of them were charged incorrectly — never in my favor mind you. If I go in and shop, I carry a pen and paper with me and mark down each price because I will invariably go up and be overcharged. Consider yourself warned.
Always — check the expiration dates on everything. From yogurt to soups. Oftentimes I will get home and have to go back because the dates are past due.

I live across the street from this store and drive to the store on North Calumet to shop. Produce is consistently old; if you only shopped here you would think cauliflower is supposed to be brown, lettuce yellow, and there are only 2 types of mushrooms. The people who work here are not motivated towards customer service and don’t like to go out of their way for anything. I understand Strack & Van stores are not like such upscale stores as Mariano’s or Whole Foods, but everything from their product offerings to employee attitudes seem mediocre at best. You could not shop here exclusively; thankfully, Costco is in Merrillville and I work near Mariano’s.
