History

Established in 1901.

Wilson Feed Mill was built in approx. 1853 – 55 by Andrew & Robert Alexander & family on the banks of the Ohio & Erie Canal. Thus it is still marked on many maps as Alexander’s Mill. On December 16, 1979, the National Park Service certified Wilson Feed Mill as a national historic site.

The mill was sold to George Foster upon Andrew’s death in 1894 then Thomas G. Wilson in 1900 (whose family continued using turbine/water power until the early 1970s). They had previously owned a mill in the Mill Stream area (modern day Broadway Ave & Miles Ave). They began milling & selling wheat, rye, flour, scratch feed, and shelled corn. With transportation improvements by the 1920s, the Wilsons could sell to larger commercial bakers and restaurants. For the middle part of the 20th century brought a focus on the mixing & sale of livestock & poultry feed. Fast forward to present day and it’s bird seed & feeders, lawn & garden, pets, and small animals with the 4th & 5th generations of Wilsons.
