On Target Sporting Goods

I will start off with telling you I am a first hand gun owner. I went to On Target with my brother-​in-​law who is an avid gun user. With a new gun, we had a jam that we could not get free. The owner, Karl, was very helpful in getting it unharmed and gave us some very good advice on steel jacket vs brass. I give this range a great review as a first time shooter. I would also say that my brother-​in-​law loves this place.

I came here with my girlfriend on a Saturday afternoon to use the Groupon to shoot. I’ve been to probably 40+ shooting ranges around the country and the staff on On Target were some of the friendliest I’ve ever met. Everyone there was very helpful and didn’t act like they were cocky or arrogant like I’ve seen at some shooting ranges. Their ammo was priced very fair and they has a nice selection of rental guns. I would definitely return If I lived in the area.

Horrible return policy. BEWARE: If you need to return an item, no matter what the case, EVEN WITH A RECIEPT — you CAN NOT get your money back. They make you use in-​store credit or give you range time. Basically, once you spend your money there, it stays there; which, is NOT what they told me when I purchased the item for a Christmas present. I specifically asked if he could return the item if it wasn’t the right bag. The employee at the checkout told me so long as I had a reciept, I could. When we did in fact return to return the bag, the owners told us they do not return funds, only give store credit or range time. This seems shady to me and the customer experience I had was horrible as well. The employee’s (including the owner) were not empathetic nor did they offer any apologies for the misinformation. We were members but will never go back.

I needed someone to do a transfer but also wanted someone that I could go back to for lessons, advice and future purchases and I believe On Target will be a great place to do all of this plus they have their own indoor shooting range. While it took a couple of visits to get the paperwork started (they are always busy when I went) the owner himself took care of it. This being my first time purchase I didn’t know what to expect and Karl made it a great experience. A very down to earth kind of guy, he is living his passion, full of great information and very upfront about cost and how things work in his business. He is definitely the kind of guy you should know.
All the staff I came in contact with were great and while they always seem busy (early hours I am told are best to get in), that I would agree is the current state of the market so can’t hold that against them, plus things did move pretty well overall.

Sean H. and I tried to go to Top Gun this past weekend to check out some firearms and practice our shooting in their range.
Unfortunately T.G. was packed to the brim with holiday shopper/​shooters and the wait to shoot was about an hour + AND get this… apparently starting Sept 1^st 2012, they stopped renting out ear and eye protection. Since we’re still novices, we do not own ear/​eye protection yet. Well, technically I have some gross old foam ear plugs in my junk drawer at home, and some crappy scratched safety glasses from two jobs ago working in a shop.,… yeeeah you get the picture. So we decided to head out of T.G. and find a different range to shoot in for the day.
It was a rainy Sunday and we sat in my car on the Unilocal app trying to find a place nearby. Except that this place didn’t even show up in my search. I even tried messing with the filters. Sean H. discovered it on google, so we decided to head there since they are open till 5pm ish on Sundays, from what I recall.
We were instantly greeted upon arrival. The staff here is super friendly and cool. They will let you look at whatever gun (s) you want and offer practical advice as well as their own personal opinions about what firearm (s) they have found to be most effective for specific purposes. e.g. what would be good for CCW or something just for fun or maybe a practice gun.
The wait to shoot was about 25 mins which was way less than T.G. plus they rent out ear/​eye protection. Yay. We both decided to try 38’s as last time we shot 22’s (at Sovereign Arms.) This place has a way nicer shooting range than S.A. did. I didn’t see or try the one at T.G. so I really can’t compare, but I know T.G.‘s is ventilated. I wasn’t sure if this one was or not. It was cold in there, and I had to wear my coat, but I didn’t mind. Better than it being too hot! Also I wasn’t sneezing up gunpowder residue the next day, so that was good. (But I also didn’t shoot 100+ rounds!)
We had a couple of failure to ejects but from what I hear, 38’s are pretty picky. You have to find ammo that works for your gun.
I liked their selection of targets (zombies, yay!) and they had a couple of nifty guns I liked looking at including a really sweet (and not super expensive revolver.) I wanted to shoot a 22 caliber M1911 but they didn’t have any for rent at that time, so I was a little bummed, although Sean H. was prodding me to try their 45. Yikes. My ears were about to explode because the dude next to us was shooting a 45. OMFG. So loud! But then I discovered my ear plug was loose underneath the muffs, so that was probably why, lol. Remind me to buy my own protection!
Overall, I’d definitely come here again, although it’s still a bit of a haul for us. I think I want to try a bunch of different ranges before I decide which I like the most. For both guns, about 45 mins of shooting time, and enough ammo for both of us (wasn’t much, I forgot how many rounds but it was about $ 19 worth of 38 ammo), ear and eye protection, and target, it was around $ 60 I think. We split it ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ and it was cool that they were able to split it for us esp considering the line behind us.
Like I said, the awesome staff is what would make me come back although I wish they had a slightly larger selection of guns.
