Mare Island Sports Complex

By far probably my least favorite place to play Basketball. Hasn’t changed since I was in high school, still the same run down courts. What makes me scratch my head is how they filmed Battle Bots in here and still didn’t put any upgrades into the facilities? I mean I can see they put some new turf in… but really? They closed for months and after all that thats all they can come up with? On a rainy day, it can be kind of dangerous to play on the courts. I find myself slipping when I’m trying to make my moves. In the summer time I would rather play on a blacktop, just bad here. Its cold in the winter and the lighting is very dim inside.
Anyways, they have basketball courts, indoor soccer, volleyball courts, and also a indoor batting cage.
This place is long overdue some upgrades.

I come here to bring my son to his cubbies basketball. It’s pretty decent for what we spend. My son still loves it though. They should offer more bleachers for everyone to be comfortable and enjoy while watching our kids. Overall it’s okay.

We had to come here for a club volleyball tournament at 7am. As we exited the freeway we were welcomed to the town by countless smiling drug dealers, Vallejo really does seem to be the «City of Opportunity».
This sports complex is just lovely, so vintage.
After passing countless vacant buildings and abandoned cars we finally made it, I feel as if I’ve just stepped back in time.
There are no amenities (except indoor plumbing) at all and nothing walking distance, it’s kinda of like camping indoors.
The staff is pleasant and didn’t give me a hard time about bringing in a coffee, normally I smuggle it in my purse when we go to other venues.
Just counting the minutes till this tournament is done…

Wow this place is ancient, dirty, cold and needs a major make over!
Driving onto the old base I wondered are we in the right place? The surrounding buildings are barely standing, windows knocked out, roofs missing and the area reminds me of scenes from the Walking Dead!
We were attending an all day «club» Volleyball tournament. The facility was set up with 4volleyball courts, soccer field and basketball court (all indoor).
Here’s what they did not have:
Clean restrooms with paper towels
Heat/​ventilation system
Snack bar
Room for the number of people attending
Bleachers for viewing the games
Here’s what you need if you attend a sports event:
Blankets and layered clothing
Folding lawn chairs
Plenty of snacks and food
Hand sanitizer and paper goods
Great attitude to deal with the crowds
Lastly a nice RV to nap in and have a clean restroom!

I was not impressed with the sports facilities here at Mare Island. The surrounding area is of course a bit run down without the military base anymore. The sports center is similarly run down, though it is quite large and has several basketball courts, soccer, baseball batting cage, and volleyball.

Been going here weekly during the summer for some volleyball and the $ 5 entrance fee can add up after some time. There’s no air conditioning so you’ll get hot quick. It’s like playing sports in a sauna. My advice is to bring a lot of cold water and a towel to wipe your sweat because IT WILL HAPPEN.
The place has 2 volleyball courts, 2 full basketball courts, a soccer field, a «track» around the soccer field, and I think 2 batting cages.

Been here for volleyball. Usually cold and in a very wierd place. The courts are nice but I’ve seen better.

It can get pretty cold inside, so if you’re just spectating, I do recommend layers!
The only time I ever come here is for volleyball, so I can’t comment on the batting cages, soccer field or the basketball court. Although it all looks really nice. The bathrooms are decently clean.

This place is a cool find! It’s $ 1 for 16 pitches in the batting cages, which is where I spend all of my time there. There’s also volleyball, soccer and basketball. For batting cages, they have:
40mph/​60mph/​70mph

The field and court rental fees
Soccer Field $ 75 an hour
Basketball Court $ 45 an hour
they have a snack bar with tables, and sell pizza, nachos, soda, gatorade, water, coffee, and more.
Staff is great. The owner Mike is a great guy

Just off Hiway 37 at Mare Island (the old Naval ship base) is a Sports Center that has two indoor soccer fields, and several basketball and volleyball courts with a café and viewing area.
Drop in fees are reasonable and recreational and competitive league team fees are very reasonable compared to Vacaville, Davis, Cotati and Alameda for us North Bay ‘peps. You can just go down and play some hoops with your friends or family or get into some real game action on a weekly basis. They don’t have a website with photos or information but if you call after 2pm on weekdays or after 9am on weekends you can reach a real live person, in my experience. The indoor soccer was the main appeal for me and the synthetic surface is good, not to stiff but flexible and rolls over easily so you can slide if you are tyring to and has those little rubber pellets that make the surface soft for when you do fall. Indoor soccer shoes are best, but flat soled shoes like skate shoes work well enough (no outdoor cleats are allowed). Basketball and Volleyball court surface and set up was good also. It can get busy during the winter and wet weather weekends so call ahead to reserve courts and bring your own first aid kit. The Indoor Soccer League games are refereed all by adult trained and certified refs’ that are paid by your team fees, which is really great — especially for the Youth games! Parking can be tight on weekends with several different sport games occuring, but have never had to park that far that it was a real hardship.
The facilities are not «high class» but are adequate and the price is right! Use a web map to find it on Walnut Avenue, as there are lots of old buildings on Mare Island but it is a big round one on the right side if coming from Hiway 37 going West, you take the Mare Island exit and go straight thru the gate and that puts you right on Walnut! You can also come through Vallejo and cross over the bridge to get to Walnut, take a left onto Walnut and ‘hoop, there it is!
