40+ years as a pro film, digital, and print lab. We provide a personalized experience to all levels of photographers.

Richard develops and scans film, including C41, Black & White, and E6 film formats. We also provide digital post production services, including density & color correction as well as retouching and film emulation for digital files.

We print/​make all our products in-​house, including photographic prints, fine art prints, black & white darkroom prints, hardcover and softcover books, press cards, flat canvas and gallery wraps, frames, and albums.

History

Established in 1970.

The original Richard Photo Lab was one man in a closet-​sized «lab» space in Hollywood, California – no machines, doing everything by hand. He was a perfectionist, and it was that alone which earned him a small but super loyal customer base in the commercial photography world. His work was the best, and they needed the best. This quality-​obsessed attitude is still alive and well at Richard today!

I won’t be using this place any longer. Before using Richard’s, you should read the negative reviews from their previous location (
), because I had a somewhat similar experience.
To make a long story short… I asked them to reprint it because the print I received was so dark, they said that it was my fault: I didn’t calibrate my computer to match theirs. That I had to BUY their calibration app to make sure that the photos look the way it would look in their printers.
This warning was NOT prominently displayed on their website or on their ROES. They said that it was there, but, I’m sorry, I didn’t know I had to go search and read through every single thing they have on their site to get a proper print. I STILL to this day have no idea where they said those warnings are.
My boyfriend, who’s a professional photographer, also used them prior, and they AGAIN blamed HIM for the dull, muted look to his prints.
I guess it really is NEVER their fault…
I started to use
to do my prints now, and they are AMAZING! They guarantee their color so they will keep adjusting the print to the color you like until you’re satisfied. WHAT AMAZING customer service!

PS: I also noticed that whenever I called RPL about the issue, Albany, the woman I spoke to about the problem never wanted to talk to me on the phone. She’d tell whoever was on the phone with me that she’d email me. I guess RPL is so use to getting dissatisfied customers that they’d rather not face/​talk to them in person…

Richard Photo Lab is the gold standard of photography labs. The quality of prints produced by RPL are some of the best I have seen. If you’re looking for a lab who has the skill to print your work just as you see it on your computer screen, RPL should be your top choice. You can’t go wrong. And, they’re cool.
