What better activity for July 3rd than blueberry picking? This family of three set out for a patriotic day as «American Pickers.» I have been blueberry picking since I was a little kid with a coffee can hanging around my neck with a string of yarn. I always have & always will love the experience. I have been to farms in PA, NC, &SC. This was my first in MA. When we arrived, we met the owner, Bill. He was very nice & directed us to the bushes & gave us our buckets. My first observation: the bushes are enclosed in netting, you have to enter the area through mesh doors. Okay, smart move– keeping the birds out has enabled the bushes to have a HUGE crop. Every bush was bursting with large, ripe berries. We picked nine pounds of berries in no time, it would have been easy to keep going. The charge was $ 30, much less than you would pay in the stores for this quantity. The property was beautiful, and the farm was the perfect size. I’m happy to support local farmers, and we’ll be back! Bonus tip: blueberries freeze well, so why not pick extra?!?

Decided to go blueberry picking today with a friend and it happened to be opening day for U-pick at Sunburst Blueberry Farm. It was our lucky day. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Bill & Debbie Baisley, the owners of the farm. Bill showed us the available baskets to hold our bounty while we were out in the field and then gave us a mini tour of the blueberry plants and some instructions on what to look for, which was especially helpful since it was my first time picking my own blueberries. Essentially, you want to pick the blue ones. What can be difficult sometimes is spotting the ones that are still slightly red. But, even those will taste good, although a little more tart. I think I spent a good hour and a half picking and wound up with a little over 5 and a half pounds of delicious pesticide free blueberries for less than $ 20. The farm is a small business. It is strictly u-pick and only blueberries. There are no food concessions or a side store. The owners put care into the farm and it’s evident in the way the area is set up, the blueberry shaped signs along the way that indicate you’re going in the right direction and the baskets for picking. Don’t even think about it — go! Tips — check their website for updated information. They do try to post updates; it’s how I knew about opening day. Bring cash.
