History

Established in 2010.

The Rustic Loaf first offered breads at the Orange County Marketplace on Saturdays — selling out early each week. Eagerly welcomed to Redlands Downtown and the Grove School Organic Farmer’s Market, the community embraced The Rustic Loaf breads and residents raced each Saturday morning to get their flavor of choice. Word spread quickly. Health benefits, Artisan quality, and the charm of age-old traditional bread baking pleases Redlands residents who value organically grown, locally produced foods. Our breads have no preservatives nor mold inhibitors, and no added sugar besides the honey that enhances the multi-grain whole wheat.

The fan base has grown, and Rustic Loaf breads can now be found in eight (10 in the summer months) farmer’s markets throughout the week, seventeen independent meat and produce markets, as well as our store front bread shop in Upland.

Meet the Business Owner

Mike U.

Business Owner

Mike experienced the quality taste and texture of true Artisan bread first on his travels to Europe, and then during a season of living in the Northern California Bay Area. His desire was to bring that same European quality to his hometown of Upland. He studied books by world-renowned bread bakers including Peter Reinhart, Daniel Leader, and Chad Robertson of Tartine in San Francisco.

Mike mixed, baked, failed, researched, re-mixed, baked, incorporated newly learned techniques, failed again, baked again, and finally succeeded in creating European quality breads to his satisfaction. He ultimately developed his own personal style and recipes that have customers raving and coming back again and again.
