Big Bone Lick State Historic Site is a place of quiet serenity and gentle seclusion. It is both a historic and prehistoric locale, with a well-appointed museum, campground, hiking trails, planned programs, gift shop, and bison herd. The park is a world-renown site that attracts visitors from across the globe owing to it’s designation as the birthplace of American vertebrate paleontology.
History
Established in 1960.
In 1972, the park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2002, the National Park Service designated Big Bone Lick as an official Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail Site. In 2009, the park was additionally listed as a National Natural Landmark.
Meet the Manager
Dean H.
Manager
Dean is a career employee with the Kentucky Department of Parks and a native Kentuckian. He possesses multiple degrees from Eastern Kentucky University and has served as Naturalist and Cultural History Interpreter with Kentucky Parks in a career that spans 30 years. His service has included stints at Cumberland Falls, Fort Boonesborough, Pennyrile Forest, Lake Barkley, and Pine Mountain. He was appointed park manager at Big Bone Lick State Historic Site in 2013.
