This is a nice used book store, with a decent selection. I’m a little puzzled by the negative reviews, as I have never encountered anyone being rude in the store. Personally I rather like the more relaxed, less hurried feel the place has. I enjoy browsing the many titles and authors without a clerk asking me every two or three minutes if I need help. Frankly if I really need help, I will seek it out. When in Turlock and looking for book to read, this is my first stop.

I love this store! The owner doesn’t kiss your butt or give a flip what you think! I LMAO reading this owner’s response to customer complaints. Never seen a business do this. Now I’ll go back to reading fail blog.

A very enjoyable little book store in our town. Recently I called about a book, the clerk found it and put it on hold for me and I picked it up within 15 minutes. Best part, the book was in good condition and cost only 4 bucks. In a world where brick and mortar stores are becoming increasingly rare, I’m glad to still have a place where I can find a good book at a good price.

–Good selection of books. –Prices are a little high, but if you like browsing through old books and supporting local businesses, sometimes you have to pay a little more than you do on Amazon. –The woman working the day I visited was friendly but not overbearing, which was great. She helped me find what I needed and left me alone. The man working the day I visited was a jerk, but thankfully, he disappeared shortly after I arrived.

A friend of mine introduced me to this place. I was very impressed with the size and selection of the store. There is a great variety here, and is also quiet and cozy. My main issue is the price of the two books I bought. I’ve bought a few books in my day and never have I ever paid so much for used books. I can go online and find any number of books for easily half the price even when shipping is accounted for. I think I ended up paying $ 15 for the two books. As for customer service, I didn’t have a problem, or one that caused me to recall anything. I like my space when I’m shopping and feel hounded if I’m being constantly asked questions. That being said it seems that those types of reviews generate a strong response and the owners’ snarky attitude towards the situation is very off-putting and unprofessional.

What’s with the negative reviews? I don’t expect to be greeted at the door by some harried clerk, like at a big chain store. I like the soft welcome, it gives me a chance to explore the stacks without any pressure. A used book store is like a library, or a clubhouse for book lovers, with the benefit of taking home the perfect book for myself or as a gift. Lightly Used Books is quiet, warm, inviting a long browse or a wide-ranging conversation with the owner or other customers. I’ve dropped by to trade books and realized that an hour has gone by either talking books with another customer, or chasing down titles in the history section. Once I walked in to an author’s reading and had a wonderful time discussing the art of writing autobiographies. The selection is terrific, I’ve found science fiction, military history, gardening, art, and on and on. Even the décor is fun and changed frequently to keep it lively. The place even smells good, all papery with a hint of pipe tobacco. If they could get that smell into a men’s cologne, I would buy it and hand it out as Christmas presents. Seriously, downtown Turlock is a great place and this gem of a bookstore is a treasure.

Went there to check out the place as I love used book stores. Didn’t really like it too much. There’s not much of anything here in the valley. If you go to S.F. or San Diego then you’ll find some good ones. Other then that, I’m surprised this place is still open.

Unfortunately those in Turlock will be better served still driving to Yesterdays Books in Modesto. I shopped in this store for over a year until I brought friends here and an employee was extremely rude. It is a bummer since I was very excited to get a bookstore in Turlock and now I will have to wait for a better one to open.

Too bad this is our only bookstore. When are business owners going to realize they need to acknowledge customers as they come through the door and not ignore them? They did have actually a lot more books than I anticipated. My One Main pet peeve that I have is going into a business and not being acknowledged by anyone. My friend and I were searching for some books and were in the store at least 30 minutes and never acknowledged or asked if we needed help with anything. Really? Good luck with keeping your business open. And I didn’t find the price is very cheap for used books you can go on Amazon or Ebay and get them cheaper.

I am so sorry I have to give this book store a thumbs down! My husband and I love book stores! We are new to Modesto and the one major bummer is there are only two book stores here. So we went to Turlock with hopes of finding a gem, instead the women who was working there was so rude, she did not say«hello» or thank you when I purchased a book. So no matter how nice the book store could be, the employee was so rude we will never be back! This is a wake up call to people with businesses large or small, even if you are the only business in town, you will loose clientele! So be polite and friendly when customers come into your place of business!

This store is great. You can trade your old books for new old books. I was able to find the books I was looking for plus more. There is something for every reader. The sections are labelled nicely. Once you get the hang of how it’s laid out, it’s easy to find your way around. I could spend days walking the aisles looking at books. The staff is very helpful, if you want help and able to find what you’re looking for. I even called to hold a book once because I didn’t want to drive from Atwater if they didn’t have it. Love this store. Need to make monthly visits, I think.

Love book stores and everyone here was friendly and did not care that I roamed around for a couple hours. Found some great books. Nice little shop to have in our city.

ever since summer came around, i watched an empty storefront turn into this wonderful addition to the slow-to-progress historic downtown of turlock. while independent bookstores are sparse these days thanks to conglomerates like barnes and broders, it is nice to see one opening up instead of closing down. while i kept telling myself i’d go in at some point, it was a couple days after winter solstice that i decided to venture in to pick up some books for the kids in the family. i felt it necessary they enjoy literature outside disney books they’re bombarded with because they feel the need for some fantastical life that’s unrealistic. the store is laid out nicely. the vintage décor throughout makes you almost feel you’re walking into a saloon and wish you wore your chaps and spurs. though, a recliner in the corner would make it feel like a library in someones mansion. the shelves look as if they’ve been built out of reclaimed woods, some glass cabinets showcase vintage pieces as if it was someones library and the while the books are sectioned in respective genres, they are a bit out of order. yet, that is the fun of going to a used bookstore, the hunt of whatever it is you’re looking for. the owner was very helpful, guiding me to the sections but let me be and allowed me to parooze without telling me what i should or should not get. it was a nice sincere and quiet way to spend an hour on a cold winter day. after about $ 40 worth of book purchases(which was about 10 books) I would definitely recommend this place for used children books. i ended up getting some babysitters club, some environment for kids books and a huckleberry finn as part of the set. the prices are great, anywhere from under $ 2 to a bit more pricey for select rare pieces. a definite plus and i hope this store manages to stay open.
