Center of the Universe

We were expecting something out of this world. LOL!
It was an experience. That’s all I can say. Wish we’d gotten free parking.

The Center of The Universe is a GREAT place to go, when you’re in downtown Tulsa. The whole area is starting to look old and fall apart though because it has lots of visitors on a daily basis. If Tulsa decided to use their tax money right, this place could potentially look a lot better.

Interesting place to visit. Stand in the center of this circle and you will hear your voice echoing thru your ears. When you step out of the circle, the echo goes away … People outside the circle will not hear your echo: very strange place.

I thought it was a joke until I stepped in the circle… Shocked and totally baffled. Speaking and hearing yourself echo in your head was crazy. I felt like a kid being tricked by an older sibling. I must research this anomaly. Great little tourist find outside the Oklahoma Jazz museum.

Just outside the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame /​Tulsa Union Depot, and on the footbridge across the train tracks and down the hill towards Archer Street is an odd-​looking circle of bricks. With very little fanfare, the people of Tulsa have discovered the Center of the Universe, and this quirky little acoustical anomaly allows the user to stand in the center of the brick ring on a 12″ concrete circle, and speak in a low tone of voice (almost a whisper). Anyone standing inside the brick ring will be able to hear your amplified voice, while those standing outside the ring can’t hear a thing. «I can see your lips moving, but I can’t hear a word that you’re saying».
There is an outer ring of low concrete benches which seem to catch the sounds and amplify them back into the center of the ring.
There is no cost for this attraction, and plenty of people seem to walk right by without stopping to partake in the amazement. I’m sure this is popular with little kids.

Not sure if it’s the real deal or a hoax but it was underwhelming. The walk around downtown Tulsa more than made up for the disappoint of this location. The center has no official markings that I could distinguish. There were allot of chalk and paint signatures of individuals who have visited and one that said center of the universe. I did not try the echo/​sound experiment but mainly because I was by myself and as individuals from local businesses passed by one the way to much I thought It might look strange for me to talk to myself and see if it really worked. The statue nearby with the cloud and thunderbolt is unique and picture worthy of the lighting is right. Unfortunately in my picture it was not.

The Center of the Universe is in downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma. REALLY! There is a specific spot in central Tulsa that is beyond belief, like nothing you have ever experienced before, and defies explanation. A bizarre phenomenon occurs when you step on the circle known as the Center of the Universe. You hear a reverberating echo, not just in your head, but the microphone picks it up as well.
When you stand on this 12 inch by 12 inch circle, just a block away from the Woody Guthrie Center and the Philbrook (Downtown) Museum, you experience a reverberating echo that makes no sense whatsoever. When you step off the spot in any direction, the phenomena stops and when you step back in, it’s back!
As a scientist, it defies explanation even though I tried to analyze what could be causing the phenomenon. There is no visible reason for the change in perception and the reverberating echo which is not subtle, but very obvious.
The only explanation I could come up with is that this is in-​fact THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE … Definitely worth a visit if you’re visiting the many museums, galleries, and bars/​restaurants in the area!

Eiffel Tower in Paris, Great Wall of China they really have nothing compared to the center of the universe in Tulsa. .One of the few must do things to do in Tulsa. It is closely located to many good restaurants nearby so there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t stop by and see this amazing site.

While working on a documentary about the mysteries of ancient China I visited an emperor’s palace where if you stood at a certain spot and spoke even in a whisper people anywhere in the square could hear your voice clearly. In a more humble setting in the center of a footbridge across the railroad tracks in downtown Tulsa the Center of the Universe bears some similarities, however the voice you hear is your own.
It’s not very well known (hence 1 or 2 reviews) and I guarantee you will never stumble on it accidentally. The bridge is used primarily by local workers to get to and from the Brady/​Greenwood Districts to the Blue Dome District. The actual spot of the Center of the Universe is unmarked and simply looks like a decorative circle made of bricks. If you walk over it nothing magical happens, unless you happen to be singing «Hi ho, hi ho it’s off to work we go» which probably doesn’t happen to a whole lot of people.
If you’re in the area, try it. It’s a lot cheaper than a trip to China.

Kinda fun place to go to to listen to your own echo. I dunno what they call these things, but they are basically open spaces that produce an echo, if you talk/​shout from a specific spot, usually marked by a circle. I’ve only heard of 1 other place that has something similar — the Vigelandsparken (sculpture park) in Oslo, Norway. But I dunno, it’s possible that every/​other science park in the world has 1.
The C.o.t.U. is near train tracks. We stood at the centre of the circle & curiously listened to our own voices produce an echo that was ‘kinda suspect’ — it didn’t seem to be the type that reverberated throughout the whole city. It’s as if the weird echo is just for you & your friends or possibly only happens in your head. I dunno the scientific explanation for it, but I would recommend the spot to families with kids, or buzzed hipsters looking to have 5 minutes of fun. Don’t get too close to the tracks.
