This place is great! Sarah does a great job cutting my hair. She’s always with the latest style trends if not setting them. Her personality will make you leave with a smile.

I went to Sarah a couple times for cuts and liked her although she struck me as a bit rude and not very customer oriented. As time progressed they kept messing up my appointments, double booking, etc. The last straw was when I had an appointment with Sarah, waited weeks for it, went in and I had been double booked and another woman cut my hair. It was the most horrible cut of my life, I am still trying to grow it out a year and a half later. I have very wavy hair and wanted a longish bob, she basically cut me a pixie. It was so traumatic. I walked out crying. Never, ever going back again. Now I go to Ella 6.

I checked out a few of the other ‘reputable’ salons in Tucson and between speaking with arrogant employees about booking an appointment or utterly ridiculous schedules that couldn’t get me in for almost a month, I decided to check out The Hive per the recommendation of a friend.
I booked my appointment at 5pm with Anna Jo — two hours before their closing time — for a cut and color (ombré/​balayage). Despite having to work past their usual hours, she took her time, was awesome company to chat with and proved to be not only a really down-​to-​earth woman but also a kick-​ass hair ARTIST.
While there, the owner, Sarah, came in. She’s really laid-​back and treats the studio as if it were her second home. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the casual demeanor these ladies approach their profession with — it is appreciated amongst the totally unjustified snobbiness I was greeted with at other salons. Especially in Tucson.
NOT TO MENTION my cut and color, being a two and a half hour job, was $ 130. That’s almost too good to be true.

I have been going to see Eugune for almost a year. I think he does a great job. I think I pay about 35 for a men’s cut that I really like. It was very hard for me to find a place I liked in the downtown area that could easily cut guy’s hair without me having to know what I was saying.
I feel very comfortable there and it’s great to go get a drink after.

I have had my hair cut here by Eugene three times, my first experience was great, I thought, yes I finally found my stylist after living here two years. The second time was ok, I had to go back a few days after my cut to have a few areas touched up, to my shock and amazement I was charged $ 30 for 10 minutes of his time (this was not $ 70 cut quality) I could understand if I had waited weeks but 3 days, really? Not being one to give up quickly and really wanting to have a go to stylist I gave it a third try. Not sure if I caught Eugene on a bad day but the cut was the worst of the two prior attempts. I’m afraid I will not return and will continue to look for my stylist.

Anna Jo was great! There is a coloring technique called balayage. I always forget this word (probably because I have no idea how to pronounce it) when going to get my hair done. I usually say, «Its not quite ombré, the coloring style is some French sounding word that starts with a b…» and NO ONE has a clue what I am talking about. So I had given up hope and stopped asking. During my consultation with Anna Jo I explain that I want my roots not to look ridiculous when my hair starts to grow out so I asked for a not so dramatic ombré. Right away Anna Jo says, «Oh yes, I will do a balayage and that will meet all your needs». FINALLY someone that knows of and can do a balayage!!! My coloring came out perfect and I love my hair. She also trimmed and re-​shpaed my hair — which also came out perfect.

Eewww. I’m ready to drop some serious cash on my hair — new color, new cut, new look. Stopped by on a Saturday to book a consultation and the advertised hours show that the salon opens at 11. I arrive at noon and the salon is clearly closed. I start to grab my phone to check the hours and a girl walks up behind me and unlocks the door to the salon. I smile at her and ask «Are you opening up?». This chick was extremely rude and glares at me with a «Not. Yet.». I sit down outside and wait figuring maybe I should stick it out. In the 5 minutes that I’m waiting for this girl to get it together, 2 other women try to walk in and find the door locked. Guess what? We all walked away. I will not be back to give these people my money.

AnneJo is amazing. For many years and too many bad haircuts, I have finally found a stylist in Tucson who can work magic with short hair, has talent, experience, and a fun, hip personality!!!

Anna Jo is incredible! She is a true artist, and i love getting my hair done with her, where I feel totally at ease knowing I am in good hands. Plus I get to drink a bloody mary, since The Hive is right in Hotel Congress. It’s a win-​win.

Eugene is the best hairstylist ever! I hate getting my haircut, since having some traumatically bad haircuts as a kid, and he makes my day every time I come here. :) Also, I normally am not a fan of a blowout, since it always makes my hair look poofy and weird, but Gene is the blowout king. My hair looks freaking amazing! Thank you Gene!

Sarah is amazeballs. Period. I’m transplanted from Connecticut to Tucson recently and I am Italian with very thick, very curly hair and extremely skeptical of who I will let touch my hair. She gave me the best damned cut and color I’ve ever had! She’s a complete hair savant. The color is rich and multi tonal with pink and mahogany highlights. It’s really fantastic and her blowouts are great, too. You can trust her to make you look gorgeous.

EUGENE!!! Amazing stylist that is precise, calm, and methodical. I completely trust him and just tell him to work his magic… he never disappoints :)

I had my haircut by Gene and he was terrific. He took the time to talk about the game plan and took great pride in providing an excellent haircut. I have had a couple of experiences at Tucson barbershops where the barber just wanted to get the job done and move to the next customer. Gene did not compromise any details in his job even when we were pressed for time with the next appointment. I will certainly be back and I plan to use the reservations by email service. Getting the studio to answer the phone was a challenge.
I really enjoyed my experience at the hive. The location at Congress is cool. I love that Congress is the Epicenter for all things downtown Tucson.

What a great hair experience! I recently moved back to Tucson after a long hiatus, and I was nervous about where I was going to get my hair cut. All my anxieties faded away once I met Gene! I feel like he really listened to not just what I said but to my hair as well. I walked out with such a great haircut and a fabulous feeling. I couldn’t imagine considering another stylist after this experience!

Being new to Tucson and needing a haircut, I checked out the reviews on Unilocal and ended up going to The Hive, located in the Hotel Congress. The place is «vintage» looking, but clean. My appointment was with Eugene, who was chatty, fun, and fast. He listened to what I wanted and that’s what he gave me. He even gave me a big hug before I left. This is a great little salon, and I highly recommend Eugene. He’s a gem.

After checking the reviews of this salon I was so excited to get my hair cut at this place with Sarah, the owner, but it was such a disappointment, they were so rude, I got there on time and nobody paid attention, they completely ignored me. I obviously walked out, and they did not care. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!

I booked an appointment online with no fuss or trouble. I booked Sara as she had amazing Unilocal reviews, and I was not disappointed. I walked in a little early, and she was ready and waiting for me. The shop is small and quaint, but it feels like home. I went in with no particular reason for getting my hair done other than wanting a treat, and with no vision for what I wanted done. Sara swooped in and picked out of my mind exactly what I would love without any problem. She created this lace braid that went into a side bun; it was loose and looked fantastic. I felt like a million bucks, and most surprisingly it lasted for hours, even though my hair is flat and has never before been able to hold such and intricate style! I would highly recommend her for any occasion or just to treat yourself! The Hive rocks!

Had my hair cut by Eugene… best hair cut ever! So happy and the price was great ($ 40). I’m from Seattle but hope to move to Tucson soon & will become a forever client. PS great downtown location & he is a crack-​up. Easy to make online appointment using my android phone.

HOLY $&@% MY HAIR LOOKS AMAZING.
I came in with a freshly dyed blue underlayer (after bleaching it to hell 3 times in less than 2 weeks). I had booked a cut and a gloss treatment (demi-​color), with no real idea about what I wanted done except lopping these gross fried ends off.
Eugene suggested a dark brown gloss to liven up my top layer of hair, and then cut in some layers all over for better definition between the brown and blue. After the blowout, he smoothed some Davines OI Oil on my now ridiculously fabulous-​looking hair and sent me on my way with hair-​drying tips and a handful of product samples.
I’m usually cheap with my hair maintenance, but I do like to go to a higher end salon about once a year to refresh my head and to get some new styling advice – and The Hives’ prices are pretty reasonable. These are probably the best layers I’ve ever had and I am just amazed at how not-​homemade my DIY dye job looks.
Plus, it’s worth stepping in just to stare at the artwork they have hanging up!

Having had long hair for years, making the change to very short hair was a big decision for me. I knew I needed a great stylist so I did my research. The Hive consistently receives terrific reviews and is a locally owned and operated business, which I think is important to support. From the moment I walked into the super cute and chic salon, Eugene made me feel welcome. He took the time to analyze my hair texture and facial shape, while patiently looking over the pictures I had brought in as potential hairstyles. Then he cut, sculpted and refined my haircut until it was perfect!
Eugene was fun and friendly, while paying serious attention to my hair. I’m thrilled with my haircut and the whole experience. Oh, did I forget to mention the terrific music playlist that made the time fly by?
