History

Established in 1977.

Dave Wilderotter started Tahoe Dave’s Skis & Boards in 1977 at the Henrikson building in Tahoe City. Since snowboarding wasn’t in the scene yet, the original name was Dave’s Ski Shop. Dave had a small room, 15 pair of skis, a workbench and an immense desire to «have a good time and stay out of jail.» (Which still applies today.) Since Dave couldn’t afford to pay rent for his new business and a place to live, he did the only thing he could. He made a make shift bedroom above the bathroom in the ski shop. And the rest is history. In 1990 he opened the Truckee location to meet growing demand. 1994 saw the opening of the Kings Beach location and Tahoe City’s first and only dedicated snowboard shop. Then Dave’s Squaw Valley location was opened in 1998 at the entrance to Squaw Valley. What started out as a small one-​man shop in Tahoe City has turned into five stores in four convenient locations, giving Dave the ability to offer his rent at any location, return at any location.

What a great experience. Customer service was A+. They took care of everyone, even the kids, with courtesy and alacrity. We didn’t have to worry about the kids at all. In addition… the cost… half and in some cases less than half of what it is at the resort. Was totally worth the short drive into town from Northstar.

I have been to the Tahoe Dave’s Truckee location many times now over the years, and each time, I am impressed at how accommodating they are. We just had a big group up in Truckee for the weekend, and most of us rented from there! It was seamless. This is the rental place of choice, since their staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They have a huge selection of rental options, whether you or beginner or advanced. They also have a demo shop in Tahoe City, which I used this season to purchase a board! Definitely recommend this place!

If you plan on skiing or snowboarding at different mountains & you can fit your gear in your car, it’s a good idea to rent your gear outside of the resort as most resort rentals are pricey. We were staying with a friend in Truckee & he took me to Dave’s to rent boots, skis & poles. Their service is very good & prices are excellent. My 2 day rental package for ski equipment was only $ 55! That’s before damage waiver of $ 0.99 per day & sales tax. Good quality equipment too. I had K2 skis with Salomon bindings. They’re pretty quick to fit you with boots & the appropriate ski length for your skill level & adjust binding settings, fit you for poles, sign all agreements, pay at the cashier then off to the mountain in under 30 minutes (this was on a Friday morning). They take an impression of your credit card which will be shredded in front of you when you return your equipment. Returning equipment took less than 5 minutes.

Thank you so much for a wonderful experience ! I have all my ski gear except ski’s … Renting ski’s can be a hassle … YET this place was exceptional !! We rented them over the BUSY New Year’s holiday and only wanted them for 2 days but we decided to go another day. Not only were we able to keep them for another day we were ALSO able to return them to there other store just outside of Squaw !! Thank you so much for working with us !! I will rent again from you until I buy my ski’s of coarse !! :)

Just picked up a pair of demo skiis and boots. Being the holiday, the staff was surprisingly friendly and helpful (despite overwhelming crowds). Danny and one other guy helped me out, service was outstanding. If I ever have cause to rent again I’ll come back here for sure.

As experienced mountain folks, my wife and I never have to rent gear (mostly because we own gear, but also because of the quality of the gear you would get in a standard rental). She needed some skis to demo and we got a very good deal and felt treated like locals. We will come back when in need of demos. Give this shop your business, you won’t regret it.

Just rented ski’s for both kids in less than 12 minutes! Staff was super helpful, attentive, and friendly! Also learned we can return at another Dave’s location which is helpful after skiing Squaw. That was the best experience by far in renting ski’s!

I phoned Tahoe Dave’s ahead of time to find out when to come in and rent skis for the next day (so that we wouldn’t be charged for that day). Danny gave us the heads up that 3:30pm was the time to do it. We came in — got skis, poles, and boots in under 15 minutes. The stock of rented gear was great. We ski in southern California around the Big Bear area and rental equipment can either go out of stock quickly or be sparse to begin with… that was definitely not the case @ Tahoe Dave’s.
Aside from the abundance of rentals, the staff members were top notch. On top of being knowledgable about snow sports all of the employees were really personable and here to get us sorted out. Sara (h?) informed us about some of the trail differences between Squaw Valley and Northstar, as we were unsure about what resort would be better for the kind of skiing/​snowboarding we wanted to do. Brain checked us out and informed us about lift tickets available at a discounted price for both Northstar and Squaw Valley.
We got hooked up by Tahoe Dave’s — covenant, fast, affordable, and easy. I would definitely recommend renting from Tahoe Dave’s!

Simply one of the best group of people I’ve dealt with in a long time. We went in over Christmas break to rent skis and snowboards for our family. I ended up getting a great deal on buying 2 used pairs of skis, and rented stuff for our kids. It was only about 2:30 in the afternoon, and they let us take the stuff with us instead of returning after 4 to get it Rapid, friendly and awesome people were all we dealt with. I did have to endure Dave himself showing up in his Michigan gear to gloat about their new head coach, but who could blame him?
Fast forward to the next afternoon. After about 1 hour on the slopes, our daughter broke her wrist. After a visit to the E/​R, we had no reason to hang onto her rented board. We took it back in, and the staff asked why we were returning it so early. (We had it for 2 days). We explained what had happened, and they IMMEDIATELY gave us a voucher for a two day rental for the next time. Who does that, unsolicited? Tahoe Daves does. To reinforce that this wasn’t a fluke, we took a set of skis back that same evening, as our daughters best friend hurt her knee and didn’t want to ski without her friend. Different folks, same result. They refunded us the rental for the next day.
They might have lost a bit of money on us, but they gained 3 families as customers for life. Keep it up, Dave. You have a great crew.

Rented three sets of skis from Tahoe Dave the night before for next days skiing. I was surprised it was busy at 6:00 PM but the friendly staffs were helpful and set up the all gears we needed, skis, boots, helmets.
We had a great time skiing a Squaw, especially my 7 and 8 years old who begin to get it. I found out the staffs fitted us with the perfect gears, which made a BIG difference when you are learning to ski, although the snow condition at Squaw was slush. I had rented from another place, a ski resort that gave us two left boots, and I didn’t even know until someone pointed it out LOL.
At the end of day returning the gears were quick and easy. Just drop off the gears and done.

Came with my friends to rent them boards for our day trip to Northstar. Was in and out in 20 minutes. Super fast service and would recommend this place to anyone on the Northshore of Tahoe who needs snowboard rentals and don’t want to transport some from the Bay Area. Was able to take a side road to get to Northstar within 5 minutes.
This location is close to Squaw and Northstar so pick your poison.

Wow, I’m never renting anywhere else in North Tahoe again! This place is perfect if you want quality and convenience on a budget.
I went into Tahoe Dave’s in Truckee because we stayed at Donner Lake for the weekend and it was convenient. The Unilocal reviews also got me here.
First off, the customer service was impeccable!
A young man by the name of Ryan I believe, instantly assisted me with my needs without making me feel badgered. He guided me step by step with the process of choosing the optimal equipment/​gear that suited me best for the conditions and experience level.
They’re way cheaper than resort rentals. They’re faster than resort rentals. The quality is better on most equipment. You also have tons to choose from so you’re not limited to only a couple brands like the resorts seem to offer.
All in all, this place made my whole skiing trip less tedious than I had expected. I will definitely come back! :)
