I’ve been a customer of John Ray and Sons for 12 years now. They have installed baseboard throughout my home, replaced hot water heaters, replaced a boiler, converted my house to natural gas, annually service my heating system, and performed maintenance service calls as needed promptly. All the service men have been extremely professional, honest, knowledgeable, and done the job courteously, professionally, and with a high level of quality. I highly recommend John Ray and Sons for any heating service need you have.

Residential fuel oil and propane supply services have really gone downhill since John Ray was bought out by an out of state company. We’ve been Ray customers at two locations for a total of 9 years, and current prices are ridiculous compared to some other local companies. We are on a budget plan, which is supposed to save us 10 cents a gallon over the market rate, however, the «market rate» they charge is 30−50% higher than some of the other suppliers in the area. We were just charged $ 3.89/gallon for a propane delivery, when two other suppliers we called would have done it for between $ 2 and $ 3/gallon. Unfortunately our budget plan contract locks us in to buying a certain number of gallons from them (which they overestimated by 15% given our historical usage) and if we wish to terminate our budget plan there is a $ 599 «liquidated damages fee.» AND they are not required to refund any surplus in our account at the end of the budget plan, but instead will credit it to next year’s plan. So needless to say, we’ll not be returning to John Ray once we’ve run our balance down.
Mind you, we signed up for this plan, so no one to blame but ourselves, but the company has changed for the worse in the past year or so, and had we know then what we know now, we wouldn’t have signed up again.
And finally, in spite of being on automatic delivery, we ran out of propane for cooking right in the middle of preparing for the Superbowl party. A good thing though, because the second tank for our furnace was at zero as well, and we would likely have lost heat if not for the emergency delivery at half time…
In spite of all this, the folks you interact with at the company (delivery drivers, technicians, customer service folks) are very professional. We felt badly that we had to drag the nice delivery guy away from the Super Bowl, but he was apologetic for the inconvenience to us and was at our house within an hour of our call.

I used this company when I moved to the area 2 years ago. The first thing I did was have the furnace serviced by another company and all was well for that winter. The second year I had John Ray and Sons service my furnace. They said I had a crack in the fire box and the furnace would need repair or replacement soon. They also came up with another $ 250 repair that I had done at their recommendation. A few short weeks later I had an oil delivery and noticed 2 days later a considerable amount of black soot all over my siding and deck where the intake was. (not sure if the soot was before or after the oil delivery). I called and they charged me over $ 400 to clean the furnace AGAIN giving me no satisfactory reason why this happened. Then they said the fire box was cracked and I would need a major repair or replacement soon. I ignored their recommendation and this year I had another company clean the furnace and they said there was no crack in the fire box. I spoke to John Ray who admitted that I shouldn’t have been charged the $ 400+ for the second cleaning but refused to give me any type of reimbursement. They had no explanation for the claim of a cracked fire box.

After speaking to Ed, the service manager he has made arrangments to have his technicians come to out my house on a SATURDAY to set a new 500 gallon propane tank and get my newly installed HWOD heating system up and running !. That, is ABOVE AND BEYOND my expectations and shows that some companies REALLY DO CARE !.

Referred by a friend who had been a customer for years. Used them through 2 heating seasons and can say that I a fan. Their billing/payment department was easy to work with and the online tools for paying and ordering were very easy to use.
Their price per gallon was always within pennies of the competitors and they did offer a budget plan if you could provide them with the previous years usage.

I wanted an air conditions system put in to cool my kids playroom in the summer. Every company I asked to do so tried to sell me a huge central ac system. These guys told me I didint need any of that and a more efficient ductless wall mounted one would work just as good. Not only that, any service I have needed from these guys have been over the top awesome. Thier prices are not expensive at all in 2014, and I trust these guys because they recommend repairing before replacing. I don’t care who owns the company, the same people are there. The same service is there and that’s what I’m paying for. I literally don’t have one bad thing to say about these guys… they can’t contr the oil prices but find me a company that makes sure they get it right the first time and don’t have to come back. All the others I’ve had sure did…

Beware of this company. They overcharge for service calls and then try to price gauge you for propane. When you ask to speak to the manager about overcharging, he berates and insults you. What a nightmare!

Was a loyal customer of theirs for years only to find out that their heating oil prices are way above everyone elses. I cancelled service and they still tried to deliver fuel to my home! Don’t bother with them as all their services are way above all the other heating companies out there. Trust me, I put a list together and compared them to everyone else.

You can’t select negative rating in Unilocal so I guess 1 star will have to suffice. Complete cowboys. They signed us up for automatic refilling of our propane without asking us, which meant that weeks before leaving our rented accommodation they delivered a full tank of propane. Then refused to refund us. They also charge a $ 100 per hour labor + $ 200 restocking fee to remove it! They are total bandits. Please do not give them your business.
