Expressions Music Academy is an organization specializing in music lessons for students of all ages and levels of experience. Our educational approach is founded in individual private lessons in piano, voice, violin, viola, cello, guitar, clarinet, oboe, flute, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, tuba, and percussion. Private lessons are enhanced with motivational programs such as recitals, monthly Studio Class, Black Belt Achievement Program, our interactive music and iPad lab, Student of the Month, optional competitions and festivals, regular student evaluations, and more. We also offer show choir classes for ages 5 to adult and Music Together classes for ages 0 – 5.

History

Established in 2010.

Expressions Music Academy started as a private piano studio in the owner’s home in Novi. After experiencing rapid growth and success, the owner, 24 year-​old Jessica Schatz, secured a commercial space, hired other professional instructors, and expanded to offer music lessons in all instruments including piano, guitar, violin, viola, cello, percussion, voice, clarinet, oboe, flute, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, tuba, and more. Expressions Novi location opened its doors for the first time in September 2010 and has now grown to over 450 students. In 2011, youth show choir programs were established and quickly became one of Expressions most popular offerings. Later that year, Music Together, an early childhood music and movement program, also was added to the list. Expressions utilizes regular recitals, competitions, monthly group Studio Classes, and an iPad lab to help motivate its students. Expressions Troy location was opened in January 2014.

Business Owner

Jessica started taking piano lessons when she was 9 years old and quickly took to the instrument and became proficient. She began offering piano lessons to students in her home when she was 15 years old and eventually grew her piano studio to over 30 students. Jessica attended Rochester College and graduated with her BA in piano performance in 2009. At that time she moved to Novi and built a new piano studio from scratch called the Novi Piano Academy. This is when she began to experiment with different forms of motivation and programs to help her students succeed. Jessica’s new studio grew by word of mouth to over 40 students by the end of the year and she opened Expressions in 2010.

Jessica now lives in Walled Lake with her two cats, Abby and Austin. She continues to teach a handful of students at Expressions, but spends most of her time mentoring her instructors and directing the academy. She is very active at the academy and you are sure to see her there!
