Delicious! We got the sopes with pollo and the mole de pollo. Also got horchata to drink. Everything was delicious! I think the tortillas were homemade. The service was very friendly, and the prices are reasonable. I will definitely be back to Tierra Maya soon!

Tierra Maya(Land of the Mayans) recently opened on Whittaker Avenue in the«Burg.» It claims to prepare, «Authentic Mexican Food.» Who am I to doubt that? The shop defines the word, «tiny,» in that it has only four tables and a short counter with four more stools. It serves Tamales, Tacos, Tortas, Antojitos, and an assortment of Platillos — all traditionally Mexicano plates. The prices run from $ 5.99 for 3 Tacos, to Mojarra Frita(Fried Fish) at $ 8.99, with Rice, Beans and Homemade Tortillas. I had the Pollo Chipotle lunch special, which was a well cooked dark meat Chicken in a dark red Chipotle Sauce, Rice and Black Beans with Queso Fresca crumbled on top. It was very tender and tasty. The mix of the sauce with the rice and beans was very pleasant and had me pushing the rice into the sauce to capture as much as possible. The husband and wife ownership team were friendly and forthcoming. Our combined Spanglish allowed for good communication, and I learned a lot about these good folks. While there, several other customers came in to either eat in or take out, and all were smiling and clearly enjoying their repast. There are a growing number of Latin restaurants in and around Trenton, many replacing the Italian joints that preceded them. They are a welcome addition that will enrich the neighborhoods in which they set up operations, just as the previous wave of immigrants enriched these enclaves before them. Welcome to the hood!

I was in the habit of going to the Trenton Farmer’s Market every Saturday and getting two tamales for breakfast. The tamale stand was so popular, that now it has a storefront, and this is it. I can’t say that I’ve tried anything other than tamales at this point, so I don’t think it’s fair to give it all the stars quite yet, but at $ 1.50 per tamale, with lots of flavors(chicken mole is my favorite), I had to give a shout out. The women who work there are super nice, too.
