Anchor Grill on New York Avenue in Trenton, has the misfortune of being located on one of the least attractive streets in post urban decaying capital city. At one time it was a serious Polish house serving up kielbasa sandwiches for the masses. These days, it is primarily a Mexican casa whose kitchen can handle a broad range of cuisines from North and South America. The bar room looks basically the same, but the vibe is totally different. From kielbasa to chlorizo is a interesting voyage. My Chicken Flautas were loaded with white meat bird, cheese and spice, and topped with shredded lettuce and a drizzle of white sauce and grated queso blanco. It tasted pretty good, but could have done with less deep frying so the tortilla flute was still a little flexible, rather than fried to a hard shell. As first impressions go, Anchor Grill missed its mark of having an attentive kitchen, and given all the superior Mexican options around town, it would not make the cut for my lunch cycle. Nonetheless, our bartender/server was very pleasant and hard at work stocking beer for the happy hour rush.
