You come to a military base for the shopping deals and to check out the mens(yes, plural) in uniform. If you’re on a clean-eating regimen, the base food court will likely have few options. My one option that wasn’t a fast-food chain with fried entrees was Captain D’s. They do have grilled fish options but they come with fries. So I chose the shrimp scampi. It came with perfectly steamed broccoli. The scampi was so-so. There were about a dozen shrimp mixed in with the sauce and pasta. The breadstick tasted like a warm white bread roll, too sweet. The service was fine; the woman behind the counter was nice as she could see I was trying to corral my daughter and step-daughter who had decided to order from the pizza counter while their dad ordered from Popeye’s.

The food is great, I usually order the butterfly shrimp and substitute the hush puppies for breadsticks instead. I love the service, Theresa is always a treat to see and I find myself always wanting to stop by hoping to see her! She’s very friendly

I wasn’t all too impressed with their flavor. I would usually get their fish and shrimp skewer meal and it was good but a little on the bland side. I liked their hush puppies and the good thing about Captain D’s. at least in this storefront. was when lunchtime hit on base, it was one of the more available spots(good luck getting Popeyes or Taco Bell during rush hour) and the food was more fulfilling. The prices weren’t that bad at all either but their food wasn’t impressive so I had to bump a star.

I love deep fried, greasy, crispy on the outside yet moist on the inside food… Yes, yes I do… So while out of town and on business at Travis AFB earlier this week they released us for lunch only to have no idea where or what to eat… So I followed the pack onto what they called the«food court» here within the base… MYPOISONOFTHEDAY: The 3-piece Batter Dipped Fish for $ 8.00 that comes with 2 sides and a medium soda. I settled on the batter dipped and fried white fish fillet place known as Captain D’s… However I am a low carb eater and although the batter is a carb loaded item the thick white fish in the middle of the batter isn’t and it was fresh, moist and devoid of ANY dark meat or fishy odor or taste… The batter was crispy, greasy and tasty although I have had better batter as it is a tad on the bland side I have also had much worse. I went with the coleslaw and deep fried okra for my two sides as they offer green beans and a stir-fry medley as well however I’ve learned that you don’t order the fish at a steak house so I kept with the theme. The coleslaw was fresh, but in all fairness I am very particular about my coleslaw and to date besides my own creation which is slammin, KFC still has the BEST coleslaw that is out there. The coleslaw at Captain D’s was bland and flavorless but I ate it as I needed to get my veggies in for the meal, but it does have a sweetness that helped. The fried okra was quite good with a crispy shell from the batter and a tenderly crispy inside and not mushy which if you know anything about okra it’s that mushy equals slimy and regardless of how much you chew it it keeps producing more slime. I dipped mine in the three sauces they offered: Tarter, Cocktail and the old stand by: Ketchup… AND I learned something new from a fellow coworker who ordered the same plate I did and that’s their Malt Vinegar which added a nice little zesty tang to the bites as I drowned them in the sauces… SPEED: This place gets a TON of business which was easy to assess as the line never seemed to stop and the poor girl; YES just one girl running the front and in the back just one cook from what I could tell really earn their money during their shifts, but they kept up… Myself I waited less than 5 minutes for mine to be up and ready to roll which was perfect as I filled my multiple sauce cups while waiting and was ready to roll once they called my number. I don’t usually pay this much for lunch as well I’m a seasoned bargain shopper and so I immediately said to myself and my cohorts as we stood in line deciding what to order: The portion sizes had better be damn good for this price and you know what… They were! The 3 fish pieces were anywhere between 7 – 9 inches in length and nice and wide and it wasn’t all batter although there’s plenty of batter coating them. The okra serving was way more than even I could finish. THENEGATIVE: Flavor… Yes it lacked… BUT would be easily corrected and enhanced if they would simply FLAVOR the batter pre dipping the food into it… A dash of pepper, salt, some garlic and or onion powder and maybe even a dash or three of cayenne pepper would do wonders for its flavor… Lastly, as I had some leftovers I asked for a to go carton after done eating and they gave me a nice and roomy one even though it was the same poor girl working the counter she made time to do so as she was slammed at the register…

Yuck, I won’t be coming back here. The fish was soggy and soak in oil plus it had no taste at all. At least the service is ok

I used to go here to enjoy their catfish but apparently the quality has dropped immensely since I was last there months ago. Today the fish was terrible, more pieces of fried hard dough and just two small pieces of hard and NOT fresh fish. Apparently it seems the fish was old, and nuked in the microwave to heat it up, resulting in the fish drying out. I returned the«meal» and got no comment at all. Companies: as I have stated often, your employee to client experience will KILL your business if your company does not care about the employees, which is what WE the customer have to deal with. I will never eat at this place any longer.

Between the food, then the service, this place only deserves one star. Lets start with the service. No one was around when I went up to order, a guy came from the back, took my order, and then gave me my number saying they will call my number when it’s ready. Ok, so I went and sat at a table right in front of the counter. I watched three people go up and order after me. Then I proceeded to watch those same three people receive there food. Well maybe it’s because we ordered the mix platter I thought. But my mom mentioned how a while ago she saw a plate go up in the window and its been sitting there ever since. So we went up, and sure enough that was our food just sitting there for the past 8−10mins. Apology? No. Just an «oh yea»… Awesome. The food ended up being lukewarm except the fried fish was hidden under everything else so the heat got trapped. The food was nothing special. everything was deep fried. So of course it was so greasy. And I dont mean fresh out of the oil greasy, I mean so greasy that the fried breading was mushy and soggy from the grease/oil. I shared my plate with my mom and neither of us had any desire to finish it. And we didnt feel very good later either. But were not used to such greasy fast food. The only decent thing I have to say is the fried shrimp didnt taste too bad once I got over the shiny coating on my fingers and on my tongue. OH! and do no try the deep fried pickles. They are salty, bitter, and ours were served cold. Gross. BOTTOMLINE: Greasy food, terrible customer service. Will not try again.

This place is NOT that bad. It’s so much better than Long John Silvers and honestly, for the prices(and it’s on base) it’s by far better tasting than a lot of quick-made seafood. It actually takes longer than 5 minutes to make(unlike Long John Silvers) and you can taste the fish! If it were a bit less greasy and tasted a bit better than I would approve. It doesn’t beat good ol’ fish and chips places though.

If memory serves me right, I’ve only seen Captain D’s in Air Force Bases. The first thing you’ll notice about this restaurant is the extensive menu. They offer fried cod, catfish, shrimp, mozzarella sticks, jalapeño poppers, and many, many more. I usually order the deluxe combo, which includes 2 pieces of fish, stuffed crab, fried shrimp, pops(hush puppies), french fries, and cole slaw. Unfortunately, there is nothing deluxe about this combo. The fish, shrimp, and the cole slaw were the only high points of the meal. The stuffed crab was dry and unpleasant. They say the shell was edible, but I wouldn’t try it again. For $ 9, this meal isn’t even worth it. A meal is supposed to leave you full and satisfying. Unfortunately, I was still hungry, and I opted for some Taco Bell, thereafter. If you do eat here, I suggest getting the catfish combo(my usual order).
