St. Matthew is a traditonal Orthodox parish, serving a multi-​ethnic community of Christians, both those born in the Faith and converts from other religions. Our services follow the ancient rites of the Orthodox Church, but are served in English.

Orthodoxy does not offer quick gimmicks, but a spiritual way of life that transforms and renews our fallen nature. It requires a true desire to change and be made better, rather than simply ‘coping’ with problems. It is not ‘God in a box,’ but rather a true relationship and interaction with the Divine.

Our views of spirituality and salvation are different from the West, and so newcomers need to be ready to shed most of their former opinions about Jesus Christ and what they think about Him in order to really understand our ancient Faith.

History

Established in 1984.

For over 25 years, St. Matthew parish has served the South Bay community by providing a spiritual home to hundreds of local residents. We obtained our present building in 1996, and recented underwent a series of renovations that have resulted in walls covered with rich Byzantine-​style icons and decorations, not unlike those found in churches thousands of years old.

Since 2006, our pastor, Fr. George, has served as our community’s spiritual leader. He offers catechetical instruction and provides information for inquirers in a friendly, no-​pressure manner. He is involved in alcoholism treatment education for the Orthodox Church of Romania, where he has volunteered as a short-​term missionary.
