History

Established in 2006.

Founded by cinematographer Tom Magill, the company was named after the marks a helicopter makes with its skids after it lands. Our clients enjoy the name, and we get a kick out of it ourselves.

Our resume includes print and video coverage for television, live events and real estate. Past clients include: «U2 360 At The Rose Bowl,» NBC’s «Parks And Recreation» and Discovery Channel’s «Shark Week.»

Business Owner

Tom Magill has been working in the television industry since 1992. While on assignment in Florida documenting a MedEvac air ambulance team for two months in 1996, Magill discovered his love of helicopters. He’s been flying ever since.

Tom has earned five Emmy nominations, two for non-​fiction cinematography. His understanding of light and camera angles help him and his photographers capture breathtaking aerial images. Magill has also served as aerial Director of Photography for several television productions. Tom’s love of flying and photography have combined to be the perfect match.

I was looking for a helicopter tour company to take my husband as a surprise on our 13 year wedding anniversary. I reached out to Skidmarks tour and reached Tom Magill who I believe is the owner. Although he was unable to work with us (totally my fault as I waited until the last minute) he took the time to text me back the name of another company and contact person.
He also followed up to see if I was able to book or need any other contacts.
As a business owner myself, I was impressed with his professional attention and it shows that he understands and values what he does. That in itself speaks volumes.
I will definitely call on Skidmarks Aviation in the future!

I must’ve forgotten to write a review of this!
After purchasing a Groupon, we went on the Hollywood/​LA tour and flew with Tom back in Oct. 2010. At the time, the Groupon also included a bottle of champagne and two free «Skidmarks Aviation» shirts.
When I first saw the helicopter and saw how tiny it was, I admit I was a bit apprehensive. But Tom knew his stuff. He was friendly and informative. The views were amazing. So, don’t be fooled by the name – it’s a worthwhile experience. The only «Skidmarks» you’ll find is on the logo (har har).

Recently my boyfriend and I drove from San Francisco to LA to celebrate our 30th birthdays and as a surprise in LA my boyfriend booked a helicopter ride. Tom was our pilot and he was fantastic! He was personable and knowledgeable providing «fun facts» and stories about the sights on the tour. This was my first time in a helicopter and while I have no issues flying a was a little nervous about being in such a small but very open space. Tom was great with going over all of the safety precautions and talked me through take off which put me at ease. The ride ended up being wonderful; really fun and a great experience. In fact I had such a great time can’t wait to go up again!

I wanted something memorable for my son’s 18th birthday and this sure fit the bill! Tom did a fantastic job for us that we will never forget! Not only did he show us the sites that were interesting, along with good stories behind many of the landmarks, but he flew over areas we asked him to including family members houses. He even had a nice gift bag for my son, who was delighted by the gesture. Perfect service.

I received a helicopter ride as a gift from a friend and had the most amazing time. It was my first helicopter ride and Tom was very attentive in making sure I was feeling alright and explaining what was going on with the helicopter. I wasn’t scared at all. It was thrilling! It was such a blast to view the Los Angeles landmarks and vicinity from the sky! Tom even put together a thoughtful gift bag! I recommend for everyone!

My husband surprised me yesterday with a helicopter ride for our 1 year Wedding Anniversary and it was the best gift EVER! Hands down one of the coolest things I’ve done to date. I’ll put it up there with Skydiving. Having never been in a helicopter before I was a bit nervous but Tom put me at ease instantly. I trusted him completely. He has such a great vibe. He’s professional, funny and knowledgeable. I was surprised how much there is to see and how different things look from above. It was an exhilarating yet smooth ride. My favorite part was getting about 20 feet from the Hollywood sign. I can’t recommend it enough!!! I want to go again!

This is something you’ll remember for a lifetime. My boyfriend recently surprised me with a helicopter ride with Skidmarks Aviation and it was the most magical, romantic, breathtaking experience. Not only is the view incredible, but the pilot, Tom, has an incredible depth of knowledge of Los Angeles and its history — you’ll never look at the city the same way again. I can’t wait for my next tour of the LA skies.

If you live in the LA area this is a MUST DO! I recently surprised my girlfriend with a sunset helicopter ride over downtown & Santa Monica. The pilot was a true professional. Tom’s demeanor puts you at ease and his knowledge of LA’s history is impressive. It was nice to experience the city from above.

I recently returned to the East Coast after vacationing in LA for a week. While out in LA, myself along with two of my friends decided to take a helicopter tour so we could see LA from a different perspective. Tom, from Skidmarks Aviation was our pilot and guide. Before, during, and after the flight, Tom was extremely courteous and the ultimate professional. The flight was smooth from the time we took off to the time we landed. Tom also has a great understanding of the region and provides some interesting history and background as you travel over many of the LA landmarks. My friends and I agreed that the helicopter ride was the best part of our trip and one of the more fun and picturesque things we have experienced. I would highly recommend to anyone who is planning a trip to LA or even lives in the area to schedule a tour. The experience is great and unforgettable.

This is the best tour in LA. It’s such a beautiful and fun way to see the city even if you have lived here for years. And, when family and friends are in town, I always try to book a flight for them to see LA in a whole different way. The pilot, Tom, makes you feel comfortable and safe, but also has a good knowledge of the city and landmarks. I highly recommend taking a flight… it’s worth every penny!

the best part of flying with Skidmarks is Tom, owner/​pilot. he’s not only a great chopper pilot, he’s also an award-​winner cinematographer, so if you want to get the most unbelievable photos of this city from the sky, he knows exactly where and when to take you. he’s really easygoing and will tailor your flight to what you’d like, and make you feel totally comfortable. or just leave your camera home; if you just want your view of Los Angeles to be forever and beautifully changed, take a flight with him. you’ll never see downtown or the coastline the same way again. it’s an absolutely unforgettable experience, and one you’ll never regret doing.
