Wineries can be found the world over. Some countries are famous for it: Italia(I have an unabashed bias for vini Italiani), France, Spain, United States’ Napa and Sonoma and many other countries. There is no shortage of wineries. Still, most, including myself when I came to this area, were surprised to find there are wineries right here in Texas. In the state that brings oil, cows and beer to the mind of those not familiar with Texas the thought of a winery is a surprise. There are many good wineries in Texas and the one in particular that I very much like and recommend is Enchanted Manor Winery which is really a meadery. These fine people know their mead. Located in the small town of Todd Mission, this meadery is making old world style mead in the current times. I first happened upon this mead at the Texas Renaissance Festival(where they now state their current production facility is) and instantly loved it. Great pains and perfection go into the making of this honey wine called mead. Enchanted Manor uses 100% local Texas honey, believes in organic farming and crafts mead in the historical way of old. You can definitely taste this in the final product. Enchanted Manor offers three perfect meads: Traditional Mead: The official mead of the Texas Renaissance Fest and a favorite of many. The taste is delicate florals with fruity undertones and that sweet light honey finish that makes a mead a mead. If you have never had mead, this is the one I suggest you begin with. It is truly enjoyable. Queen Mother’s Mead: Inspired by a traditional recipe that was made for the Queen Mother. It is a beautifully balanced blend of herbs and spices. The flavors meld wonderfully with a spiciness and hint of citrusy lemon notes. This mead is an exquisite one. Bochet: This is a unique mead of burnt honey as in flavorful and not charred. It is rich and full while at the same time soothing and soft. Bochet is an out of the ordinary yet amazing mead. This is a favorite. Where can you find these extraordinary meads? At the Texas Renaissance Festival where they have their own section and it is sold in other wine serving places throughout the Ren Fest. They offer tastings as well as a history of mead and information on the making of mead. This is an interesting and delicious presentation that I recommend. The people of Enchanted Manor are very friendly and helpful. They are proud of their mead for good reason. You can also buy it at some Spec’s although they may not have all three varieties in stock depending on the Spec’s location. Enchanted Manor has a love of craft and a respect for the old world ways of making mead and this is very evident by the high quality and impressive taste of their meads. If you like supporting local businesses and want to enjoy a lovely mead, then give Enchanted Manor a try. This is how mead is meant to be.
