This is the première wellness center in the Midwest. Why? I am a Stage 4 tonsillar cancer survivor – I did chemo, radio therapy and had an operation back in 2006– who recently suffered from a terrible pain in my larynx that rendered me hoarse and which required constant pain management with meds for an entire school year. Don worked on me personally during many hour and a quarter sessions, not only targeting the throat area but also addressing my deeper emotional issues from which this condition (and others, such as my herniated disc, my acid refux disease) arose. In just a few months not only did the pain spontaneously disappear, but the Ear Nose Throat specialist who performed a laryngoscopy and looked at my X Rays and CAT scan indicated that I had had some kind of growth that has simply dwindled away, leaving nothing but a red abrased area on my vocal cord. For me, the work that Massat and his staff of light worker therapists – whom he has taught and certificated in a 10 level shamanic cranial sacral therapy course as well as Sacred Journey and Esalen Massage at the Sacred Journey Institute in the same building on Harlem Avenue – perform on their clients verges on the miraculous. They are friendly and caring and always spend a great deal of time listening to their clients and carefully assessing their overall physical and emotional issues in a holistic, intuitive manner. Don Massat, his talented therapist wife Ania and daughter Dana and other therapists always work in a state of unconditional love.
I am an educator and playwright with a strong scientific/​empirical background, I pride myself on keeping current with the latest cognitive and health-​related literature, and have been a bit of a skeptic about alternative approaches my entire life. When I lived in San Francisco I tried acupuncture, structural integration, deep massage, and even sought out chiropractors, but I always felt like I was receiving a short term fix, a mild adjustment. I must also add that I still retain faith in doctors, nurses and medical treatments if I need them.
All that being said, I must say that I have changed my belief system and views about mind, body, and spirit radically since I came to Beyond Wellness back in July, 2013. «The proof of the pudding is in the eating,» after all, so I must report that I feel dramatically healthier now that I have been visiting Beyond Wellness for a year and working with Don Massat. I have been releasing and clearing defense mechanisms and traumas I suppressed first with drugs and alcohol when I was young, and then could not get to later even though I tried mightily with psychosynthesis therapy, 12 Step meetings, yoga, meditation, and a quarter century of light and sound brainwave entrainment devices. If this sounds like a conversion experience to alternative healing as well as an unqualified endorsement, in a sense it is!
Don Massat and his light worker therapists have been teaching me profound truths about the relationship between my core emotions and my physical ailments, as well through the Sacred Journey session facilitating my own self-​healing system to activate in ways I still can’t fathom, try as I might with my own knowledge of diet, exercise, stress, neuroanatomy and human biology. The Beyond Wellness center, together with the Sacred Journey Institute, in Tinley Park is unquestionably the leading edge of alternative healing in the Chicagoland area. I believe it is the Esalen of the Midwest for human evolution development through energy work, as well as for advanced massage techniques such as Sacred Journey and Esalen massage. I believe I can make that claim since as a native Californian I have been to Esalen for intensive bodywork. Beyond Wellness lacks a 500 foot cliff, and a striking view of sunrises and sunsets over the Pacific, but that’s about it.
