History

Established in 1998.

Community Pet Hospital was started as a Companion Clinic. It changed to Community Pet Clinic about 8 years ago. The focus was just price. The clinic was purchased in 2010 by Dr. Johnson. His kind and gentle way with animals and desire for quality, affordable care, has changed the clinic into a full service veterinary hospital with more surgery including orthopedics and TTA’s, non anesthetic dentals, with digital dental and full body x-​rays allowing better and more thorough diagnostics. The state of the art lab allows quick results for most conditions. Community Pet Hospital still has the convenience of a walk in clinic, but with the skill, compassion and affordable prices that they are known for.

Our ultimate goal is to enable your pet to enjoy the longest, healthiest life possible by combining compassionate quality care with state-​of-​the-​art technology.

Business Owner

Dr. Bruce Johnson graduated from the University of Minnesota specializing in small animal veterinary medicine. He did general veterinary medicine at a large hospital in Seattle before becoming the head surgeon for the hospital. Surgery has continued to be of keen interest including orthopedics, however his favorite is being a part of a pet’s family. Seeing them grow to be healthy companions. Dr. Johnson grew up in rural Minnesota and decided he wanted to become a veterinarian while very young. He and his wife Bonnie owned 2 veterinary hospitals in Wyoming for 24 years, then decided to relocate closer to their son in California. They sold their busy practice to be closer to family and outdoor activities in the beautiful North West.

Everyone here is so nice! It could have been that we brought a 12-​week old husky puppy in, but I think that they’re so welcoming. They did a lot to make sure that our puppy was comfortable and got the service that he needed. They explained all of the shots that he needed (there’s a discount on Tuesdays) and gave us information about emergency care. I would highly recommend going here!

We take our dog and cats here. We tried another vet for dog that was closer to our house but #1 way more expensive than Community Pet Hospital and #2 not as friendly and helpful! So we are back. The office staff and vets listen and respond and explain when necessary so that we can make good decisions with lots of info. THank You!

I have a bunny so she goes to an exotic pet veterinarian for actual medical issues, but Community Pet Hospital does her nail trims for me. I really appreciate that they do this since some vets that don’t service exotic pets won’t do anything with them. They are conveniently located for me and always extremely friendly and accommodating. The bun is very easily frightened, especially around other animals so I love that they always take her right back and get her nails done in a jiffy!

Full service veterinary care, more reasonably priced than most. They also have specials some days on things like vaccinations, nail trims, etc. More importantly they obviously care about the animals they treat and handle them compassionately. One of my dogs in particular is always very excited to go there and see them; he actually likes going to the vet.

We’ve been taking our cats here for at almost 10 years now. Staff is friendly and helpful. Prices are reasonable, and they even offer discounts off visits w/​vaccines on Tuesdays. They conveniently take credit cards and Care Credit. They never try to push services on your. (Dr. Johnson even taught us how to brush our cat’s teeth if to prevent a major cleaning.) You can get in without an appointment and they’re even open Saturdays.
We first came for a second opinion on our cat who was diagnosed from another vet with eye problems. The Community Pet Clinic found her to be in very good health without any eye problems. After that, we switched all our cats to the Community Pet Clinic. (For the record, now several years later she’s still without any eye problems.)
We now have a rescue cat, who may have been feral for a while. It took us two years before we could pick him up, and another year before he would even «meow». Most vets have a hard time examining him because he’s a little wild and keeps trying to get away. We usually try to calm him as best we can, petting him and keeping his head facing us during vet visits. But, when Dr. Johnson was examining him, he was fine. Dr. Johnson handled him expertly, and so well in fact, we hardly had to distract him.
The Community Pet Clinic follows-​up with you to check on your pet’s health and keeps you updated with emails and postcards so you don’t forget important vaccines or annual exams. They even send out birthday greetings for your pet (s). I regularly recommend the Community Pet Clinic to people I meet who are looking for a good vet.

Community is great for basic things like inexpensive shots. I would not recommend this vet if you are taking your dog or cat in if they are sick or uncomfortable. I took my dog there 5 times for the same issue. Each time they treated the symptoms and put a «band-​aid» on the problem. As result we would return every week for the same issue. When I went to get a second opinion after our second visit, I received a very confrontational call on why I wanted to change vets and inquired why I would not return. As guilty as and pressed the staff made me feel I returned three more tomes only be not listened as they just covered up my beloved dog’s symptoms. When I went to the second vet they immediately put him on antibotics and gave him further testing. He is doing much better now with the second vet’s treatment. The last time I was in for shots only I was treated very rudely and will not be coming back again not even for shots. I will be telling my friends and family to go Best Friend’s Vet instead.

They have been so helpful with my dogs Tigger and Osa. One of my dogs is a frequent visitor, and they are so helpful with her. The staff is really sweet and Zeline has always been a pleasure to work with. The doctors are all great, and I have never had a bad experience or discrimination against one of my pit bulls. It’s great because they love all dogs, and I trust them fully to take care of my doggies. Thanks for everything, we appreciate your time!

I love that you don’t have to make an appointment to come in. The wait is rarely long. The staff is always friendly. Dr Johnson was super informative as was the rest of the staff when my dog had her knee surgery. They seem to be more reasonable than other vets and won’t order unnecessary tests. I’ve taken both my fur kids here since they were babies and will continue to do so.

This clinic doesn’t take appointments except for surgery and other special procedures. The wait is usually reasonable, but if in doubt, give a call first and see how its looking. Receptionists are friendly. It is not fancy, but there is a super aquarium to keep kids occupied while waiting. Rooms are always clean. The vets are all good, as far as I’m concerned. Highly recommend if you want a vet that is reasonable, does a good job, and easy to get to in Tigard.

We had always gone to our local vet when I was told about this clinic. Since the first visit 5 years ago we have been loyal clients. Drs Johnson, Hill, Christensen, and Hendricks are all top notch, caring professionals as are the rest of their staff. They don’t recommend unnecessary tests and are always clear about how much a procedure might cost and they stick to that estimate. They don’t take appointments, but you rarely have to wait. Their prices are beyond reasonable, and when your pet has a condition requiring multiple visits, they don’t charge another office visit or exam fee. It is just continued care. When we’ve lost pets, we have received very nice notes in the mail. They offer discounts for new clients and often have specials (like $ 10 nail trim days). We won’t go anywhere else.

Came here after several years going to Banfield clinics which are very pricey. A trusted friend who was our vet left the area so we had to try someplace new. We had a very sick mini schnauzer. We received honest and respectful care for our dog. Yes, we could have spent thousands on tests, diets, etc. and I’m not sure it would have made a difference. Dr Bruce Johnson created a reasonable care plan for our dog. He did not take advantage of us when we were weak and vulnerable. The dog was too sick for anyone to save and in our hearts we knew that.
Our other 10 year old mini schnauzer continues to be seen here. He had a very very large mass in his leg diagnosed through a simple x ray and needle to look at the fluid. Because the doctor had so many years of experience he was able to diagnose the dog and schedule surgery right away which meant less invasion and no unnecessary costly tests. He removed a fatty tumor that was huge (we saw pics) and wrapping around a nerve. The incision was so clean and my dog was literally running on the leg the same day!!! Follow up care was awesome and the cost of the surgery was within the original quote. A year later and the dog is better and fully recovered–
Dr Bruce Johnson is sensible and honest. I spare nothing when it comes to my dog and probably could easily be taken advantage of. Someday the doctor will probably have to have the honest conversation with me that the time has come. He will do this with compassion and respect and we will all maintain our dignity. Great place.
They also do anesthesia-​free dental cleanings!!! My dog is too old for me to feel comfortable having him put under and it is SO much cheaper than what I was paying before and not stressful on my dog.
Bottom line, if you want a miracle worker, unnecessary tests, false hope, then go somewhere expensive that will prey on you. If you want to be reasonable and still care for your pet humanely then come here.
